epgrove1961...are you nuts? No one deserves to be murdered..that's an insult to anyone who has lost a family member who was murdered, in my case they didn't even know who he was, he was in the wrong place at the wrong time in the late afternoon.
@shellybellysf I do not believe in "wrong place , wrong time". It's a cold statement & it makes me shudder to hear cops & detectives say that. The victim is not at fault for being any where. The victim should be free to be at home or in their yard, or where ever the hell. If this is the case then ALL of us are at the wrong place at the wrong time. If you said that to those at The Twin Towers 9/11, I do not think that those words would go over too well, they were at work as they should be.
This is the real midwest sound opf the 60s. I met them many times on the road. Sir Walter was a really nice guy. I can remember when he disappeared. It was several years later when they found him in a well at his home. This was before BS&T or Chicago. This sound which was popularized by these guys, Spider and the Crabs, the Breakers and probably most notably the Fabulous Flippers is the sound of the Mid-60s from North Dakota to Oklahoma.
@john9944 Oh how neat! That must have been a good time. Did you snap some photos? Do you own memorabilia? I think that this story was very sad. He looked friendly enough and has a nice strong voice. Very cute in his days. I do like this song. Sadly enough I was introduced to his music from a program called "The New Detectives" when Discovery ran a program on his murder case in 2003 & that is where I came to like this song.
@Nocaro Yes, Walter Scott was The Cheater and his killer was "The Cheater". Who could not like this song. It plays in my head. It is so catchy and has a story. I am sorry that he died at 40. That was not old. He had some music in him for another 20-30 years. They should make a movie about his life.
@nicodemoscarfo How funny, but it was Walter Scott (Notheiss). It was the singer of the Bob Kuban group. Bob plays the drums (I believe)& kept his nose clean (so to speak). He was devoted to the music& to the group until Walter went solo & didn't do as well so Walter sang in night clubs (not too shabby) but had the No.: 12 song in 1966 for weeks. He made other albums w/ Kuban, not as hot as "The Cheater". Cheater brought them tons of money They renuinted yrs later just b/f his death in 1983
This song has has the sound of the diddly boppers from the mid sixties. Guys with black pegged pants, DA's and white socks and girls with bee hive hair dos and skirts -tight or a -line. Growing up with the coolest music ever made on earth! I loved this song. It was was when kids whjen out to dance and do the drive in circuits. It has such an uplifting sound, even though the lyrics may not be so positive. America's young people are getting screwed by todays globalist rap promoters .
such a wonderful song the way the music is played and arranged. What a glory,s time for music the 50,s 60,s 70,s and 80,s. But more so for the 60,s This song and many other,s i leastined to in the 60,s. What a wonderul familey reuion. Such class and elgance this era and the 50,s were not the gutter trash it is now. Sicking filthy rap and whinning country music. The artist of today if you can call them that. would not know class elance if it looked tthem in the face. They would run .
great tune by these guys.actually(if nobody beat me to it)they had 2 more charted hits, but not as big as'the cheater'.their lp of the same name is not bad either.
It's ashame what happened to him but if you read his life story in a way he deserved it. He was having many one nighters with different women while he was married.
i sang this song in my teens, i could hit all the notes, cruising in the car, radio blasting singing along Bob Kuban and th Inmen. that Walter Scott's voice...awesome!!!
Spent lots of great Friday and Saturday nights at Panorama Lanes in Belleville where Bob Kuban and the In Men were regulars. Walter Scott was fantastic as was the whole band. When I moved to San Francisco in 1967, lots of people had heard The Cheater and thought it was very cool. The dance clubs back in the day were the places to be on Friday or Saturday night and there were many to choose from.
There's a guy here in the Portland, Oregon area that does a mobile karaoke business. Says he was in this band and when he sings it, it sure does sound like the record. His professional name is "Rocky Rhodes". Love this song!

The REAL tragedy was that Walter Scott only was known after his scandalous death... at the time of this LP and single, it was credited as Bob Kuban and the In-Men... Scott was NEVER credited on the single and only appears in a group photo on the back of the LP. No wonder he took off after one LP with the lack of credit given him for his great vocals. Many folks still think Bob Kuban sang this song, when in fact he was only ever the groups drummer and maybe lead "exploiter". Just my take.
@SEANFIR And you know, in light of the fact that people knew it was Mark LIndsay in front of Paul Revere and the Raiders, a "featured" note wouldn't have been too much to ask. So Walter Scott exits the band and Bob Kuban and the Inmen exit the charts.
Wow. I just read something that sent chills up my spine. Walter Scott died....Dec 28 1983. Dennis Wilson from the Beach Boys died....Dec 28, 1983. May they bost Rest in Peace, sweet angels........
There are so many memories for me with Bob Kuban and the Inmen. I went to several HS dances where they played. Danced on the Admiral while they played several times. (One time ... I still don't know how this happened but ... the dress I was wearing was the same material as the whole band! What are the chances?)
As a RT one of my patients happened to be a girlfriend of his uncle. She was devastated when she was told she had to wear O2 because she thought she'd never dance to BK again. SHEdid
Walter Scott was a great man and his "Cheater" wife and her "Cheater" boyfriend decide to kill their spouses . Maybe Scott was blinded by love either way he ended up at the bottom of a dirty well to do that to someone boggles the mind I couldn't do it to a dog.
@craig1974 Yah, may he roast in hell until the damned place freezes over. He stole a huge talent from us....and murdered his wife as well....what kind of animal does such a thing...........

This song is great, Easy to sing and fun to dance. It is so catchy that you can't get it out of your mind when you hear it. Kudos for Bob Kuban from a Cuban!
I used to pump dimes in the juke box back in the early 60's for hours upon hours and listen to this song... Ad Nauseum.. I will go to my grave declaring this song the greatest "One hit wonder" of all times!
I used to pump dimes in a Juke Box in the early 60's for hours upon hours and listen to this song. I still love it! I will go to my grave declaring this song to be the greatest "One-Hit Wonder" of all times
This song is a mazing and it is ashame the way he was murdered back in the day , but that song still sticks with me, and it a known fact to look out for the cheater.
I love this song and it says it all!!! To you cheaters shame on you but what I want to kow is what do you do if you can't get them out of your head after 25 years so heres to my cheater you know who you are xoxoxo
A great sound from 1966 featuring the tremendous voice of Walter Scott. After all of these years, I can't figure out why somebody would have to kill an innocent person. If you don't want to be with a person anymore, just leave. I am still shaking my head at why he had to die. RIP Walter and you would be happy at how people still love your song.
@gingerbread1231 I just heard Bob and his band play this friday night at the Moohla Shrine Center in St Louis County. The room is great and the dance floor is big. Bob fills the place with swing dancers and freestylers. They rock like the old days and the people love them. Go to his site to see where he will be next.
I am the neice of the trumpet Player on the song the cheater and was very fortunate to be able to grow up with an uncle with such great friends that was so much more than that and yes it was very tragic what happend to Walter Scott. I am so very touched to know the Love and wonderful feelings I share for these people some else shares also! And if anyone wants to offer up a prayer for Dan I would so much enjoy your help! Thanks Carol
We happen to personally know the "trumpet player" on the song, The Cheater, and he DOES NOT have a niece named Carol. We will offer up prayers for Dan, don't pretend to be someone you aren't! UncleFun
@epgrove1961: Walter wasn't the one cheating...his WIFE was, and she and her boyfriend killed him and also killed the boyfriend's wife, making that death look like a car accident.
@XxBisexualCarebearxX You certainly were. I am a tenor sax player. I always looked up to men like your uncle. MEN made MUSIC in those days. I will pray for them in public and private devotions. My late godfathers used to get on the dance floor and carry on to this song.
what an ironic twist considering the title of their song

This song is great, Easy to sing and fun to dance. It is so catchy that you can't get it out of your mind when you hear it. Kudos for Bob Kuban from a Cuban!

A great sound from 1966 featuring the tremendous voice of Walter Scott. After all of these years, I can't figure out why somebody would have to kill an innocent person. If you don't want to be with a person anymore, just leave. I am still shaking my head at why he had to die. RIP Walter and you would be happy at how people still love your song.

when they made GREAT songs...unlike nowadays :( all those blonde 20 something singers look and sound the same, so lame...

Great song. Thanks for posting it.
As for Walter Scott's death, you said it best in your description. Ironic twists of fate don't get any bigger than that.

@XxBisexualCarebearxX
Carol,
We happen to personally know the "trumpet player" on the song, The Cheater, and he DOES NOT have a niece named Carol. We will offer up prayers for Dan, don't pretend to be someone you aren't! UncleFun

@XxBisexualCarebearxX Walter Scott got what was coming to him. You play with fire and you're gonna get burned.
epgrove1961 11 months ago
@epgrove1961: Walter wasn't the one cheating...his WIFE was, and she and her boyfriend killed him and also killed the boyfriend's wife, making that death look like a car accident.

@XxBisexualCarebearxX You certainly were. I am a tenor sax player. I always looked up to men like your uncle. MEN made MUSIC in those days. I will pray for them in public and private devotions. My late godfathers used to get on the dance floor and carry on to this song.
