  • colecash i have seen your moves and you couldnt come close to holding your own against any of the woolsey boy's!! Have you not seen Jimmy's china town demos? Frank looks more like Jimmy than anyone else. How many fights have you been in? Frank was in more that 300. Add up 1st and 2nd generations and they would make up half of that. None of the 1st gen came close to being a street fighter like frank and the way the 2nd gen is they would get one quick ass kicken from a woolsey yellow belt.

  • Jimmy knew everything Woolsey knew , but Woolsey only knew a part of what Jimmy knew..

  • You talk trash about Frank Woolsey; but guess what...?

EVERY single first generation master (student) only knew a PART of what Grand Master Jimmy H. Woo knew. Do you want to lay claim that Larry Dusatko knew / knows everything that Grand Master Jimmy H. Woo had learned / gained in his long life time?

Now that you think about what I just said, and the universal truth contained in it; you know that you sound pretty stupid making your comment above. Dillweed.

  • just agreeing w/ these fine 1st gen. Master's, parot..

  • I am not too sure what you mean by your comment?

Do you mean that YOU are just agreeing with these fine 1st generation Masters (in this video clip)?

If so; if that is what you mean...then yes...

    YOU are a parrot! :::squawk:::squawk:::

(Notice the correct spelling for parrot. Dillweed.)

  • (pt 2)

Then again, Ive seen video of Jimmys students doing high flying, situational techniques for the camera right in front of Jimmy (The TV interview). Maybe San Soo allows a person to take the aspect of the art they like and use it. It is an extensive art with thousands of techniques.

I guess the real question is, if Im encountered by 3 to 4 thugs, do I want flash or do I want quick, effective technique?

  • Actually, i never had a problem w/ being effecient & flashy, if i do say so myself..

  • (pt1)

This video makes a very relevant point. When we look at san soo techniques being done today, shouldn't we be comparing that to the video evidence we have of Jimmy?

I never saw Jimmy in person, but I can see what he did do when he was taped for demos. He did not ham it up for the camera. He didn't do fancy, flying thru the air BS that a lot of the San Soo demos show these days. Jimmy did a lot of basic 45 fighting techniques in front of the camera.

  • grain of salt. None of them were even on the same level of ability or experience as Mr. Frank Woolsey, period. Otherwise I'm absolutely in the affirmative that Mr. Woo would of included their names when he spoke in regards to being his Best, and that he didn't do. And it has nothing to do with me wavering on my remarks, but, Jon has a credible point in regards to Mr. Brandt not being here and having an opportunity to challenge my words. This matter is closed, I will respond here no more.

  • I DID address you directly, sir.

In fact you just responded to my post.

Anyone with a YouTube account can submit a post. If Mr. Surritt chooses to post, that is his prerogative.

Yes, you WERE intentionally putting down Ben Brandt.

You didn't know he was dead, and now you wish you hadn't said what you said. But don't lie and pretend you didn't intentionally say what you, in fact, said.

  • Next time, I recommend posting more carefully, if you do not want to say something that you will later wish you hadn't said.

  • @americansansoo

I realize this is an old post, but I hope you can help me find an old friend... I would like to find Ben Brandt if he is still in your area.. my name is Ted Hargis and I can be reached at hargist@netzero.com. Thanks.

  • Jon Surritt:

For The Record, Please Erase ALL Of My Comments. If I caused any harm to Mr. Ben Brandts' reputationthat was not my intention.

    Mike Guerrero

    Thanks, Mike Guerrero

  • For the Record, Jon Surritt does NOT have the power to edit my YouTube account.

He is the Moderator of the Forum, (I am the Administrator) and therefore he has great power on the A.S.S. forum.

However, he has no power on this YouTube account.

You meant what you wrote, so man up and stick to your guns.

Or are you saying you were lying when you put down Ben Brandt?

  • Steve,

If Jon has NO authority on this account then why are you letting him speak for you. If this is your account as you so firmly stated, and if you also have a problem with what I said, why isn't it you that is addressing me. And not your second string. As I stated before, I was not intentionally putting Ben down, I just to make it clear to everyone that might be viewing this and listening to everything theses are guys are saying in reference to Mr. Woolsey should be taken with a ....cont

  • Big Windmills...high kicks, low kicks, side step, deep stance... its my understanding that the way a person applies San Soo Techniques is completely dependent upon how that specific person's body structure is.. Lou Sifu enjoyed using long wide sweeping windmills.... i do not.. im a different build than he was.. everybody is different.. you can't put into a book how to "properly apply san soo techniques" and expect "the kids next door" to be able to just read it and understand how to move...

  • Long Wide moves: Long Range Fighting

Short tight moves: Close Range Fighting

Mr. Frank Woolsey was Mr. Jimmy H. Woos' Best, Fact!

Mr. Woo told me that personally, and I would be take a polygraph to back-up that statement.

And I don't know why anyone would themselves up at Mr. Woolseys' expense, can't they stand on their own merits. Also, when Mr. Ben Brant was at Frank's he never worked out hard, and always complained if you made any realistic contact. I knew him, he has no real credibility.

  • Mike Guerrero, I believe that Master Ben Brandt passed away in 1992? (I am not 100% sure of the year, but he did pass away.) I think that it is incredibly LOW CLASS of you to talk trash and cast aspersions on the character and reputation of someone who is no longer alive, and living with the rest of us; to be able to defend himself against such accusations. Maybe you didn't know that he died; but now you do. For the record, Ben Brandt was NOT my instructor; but I did meet him, he seemed nice.

  • Jon Surrit,

First, I did not know that Mr. Ben Brandt, passed away. That's very unfortunate, but I knew Ben, personally, for many years. And I personally worked out with him at Franks, and he knew how I felt. In fact the last time we spoke we discussed the old days, at Franks, and what I stated is a fact, and he acknowledge it to me, on more than one occasion. I feel it's very unfortunate that he is captured here on this tape, from my perspective, being disingenuous regarding Mr. Woolsey.-cont

  • Jon SURRITT, (not Surrit) corrected your spelling of Ben BRANDT (not Brant).

Are you really saying that Ben Brandt acknowledged that he was basically a wuss, and admitted such "on more than one occasion"???

For the record, I came to San Soo in the late 90's, so he was not my instructor either, but he was one of Robert's instructors, and he told us only complimentary things about Brandt.

You were Robert's FIRST instructor, right? And he said very good things about you also, for the record.

  • Mike Guerrero,

Perhaps you also don't understand the point of this video post???

The point being that the criticism of Frank, and Ben Brandt's included, (about how Frank was "only" all about power) is actually a compliment in my San Soo world view, and that Frank did indeed FIGHT like Jimmy taught him, and also TAUGHT like Jimmy taught him.

Jimmy looked his best when he unleashed the dragon, and pounded the opponent into next week.

  • Mike Guerero,

How does that misspelling come across... it's only missing one letter... But when you do not exercise due diligence when you speak ill of another, especially a person no longer with us, it shows poor judgement.

And for the record, now pay attention Mike... for the record, you would not be seeing ANY clips of Woolsey and the Boys, without the quest for knowledge about, and the love of, San Soo by San Soo Sifu, Jon SURRITT.

I request due diligence from you. I hope that is clear.

  • Nice video, love the old Jimmy H. Woo material...

    Thx for sharing....

"To all of you grapplers that take san soo, do you think the chinese have never seen ground fighting?"

So true whats up with all those guys doing headroll's and other "Flashy Hollywood moves".Dont forget the high kicks and "cool" jumps.

This comment isnt directed to anyone, this is just based on what ive seen on youtube so far.

    Keep it pure =)....

  • I took classes for 4 years from Frank and several other instructors such as Dennis Kirby back in the 70's. I attended a lot of demonstrations given by other instructors and personally speaking, Frank was undoubtedly the best I ever saw. Frank had a lot of good instructors working for him as well and the best were the ones that stayed closest to his vison of San Soo. Speed, power and brute force...end it quick...I loved it!

  • How could any man betray his Master???

  • Reality check Timoxe... As much as I like Frank, the fact remains that it was Frank himself who said on a radio interview back in the early 70's that he was the first white guy to learn San Soo in China... he gave absolutely NO (zip, zero, nada) credit to Jimmy in that interview. (Mike G. can verify that little piece of history I bet...)

I would have to say that THAT was just a tad bit of betrayal to Jimmy??!!

    Hmmmmmmmmmmm?

  • 100% Lies!!!! Mr. Woolsey is Mr. Chin Siu Dek's best!!!! I cant believe Al Ruben???

  • First Timmy, his name was spelled "Al Rubin." Make a note of it. Second Timmy, what exactly is it that you cannot believe? I would strongly suggest that you watch your tongue when it comes to a dead man's reputation (Al Rubin); who was beloved by all of his peers, friends, family, students -- and especially beloved by Jimmy H. Woo, himself!

  • I worked out with a few San Soo masters and been to many seminars. I've seen many video's and had the honor to train with Bill Lasiter who was a professional boxer prior to learning from Jimmy.

I remember Master Lasiter saying, Jimmy told some people to use a technique and others not to. It was primarily based on how well they could execute the technique. I.E. Back Fist

  • POWER POWER POWER the only way too go in street fighting san-soo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • If you understand san soo,you dont't have to bring others arts into it, It just shows your lack of understanding san soo! To all of you grapplers that take san soo, do you think the chinese have never seen ground fighting? Go find an instructor that understands san soo and you will see good ground fighting! (when I say you I don't mean you captain)

  • captain, are you saying that we should step in and clash with the punch or did Jimmy change his blocking method later on,That's the problem I had when I had a studio,I change techniques because I improved in my shoulder rotation, understanding angles better ect..

  • Mr. Chin taught all the evading that is Kung Fu....your problem!!!!

  • Great footage! Makes my point to some past disagreements on this subject. Oldschool

  • I agree Triple S.

Maybe The Captain is too biased because I prefer a power right punch to the jaw of Red Skull as opposed to a jab.... I'm just sayin'...

  • Would you rather hit someone with a fly-swatter, or with a sledge-hammer? Easy answer; no contest.
