i love this song!! my grandad died recently and i was very close to him, my dad showed me this song because he said he was feeling the same way and that he wanted to play it at his funeral, i think its perfect, beautiful song!
My art teacher, Ms.Kee, gave me History to listen to when l was 14...shortly after l moved away but managed to find a copy of the album immediately. This album, along with Kate and Anna McGarrigle's work, reminds me of those days...
Bought this CD soon after its release shortly after my mother died and played this song often for several months whenever I needed some catharsis. 10 years later, after my father died, life imitated art as I had to clean out their home, sift through their belongings, and decide what parts of their lives to discard. I even made the mistake, a month later, of taking my family to a restaurant where we usually met him for dinner. The poor waiter, who had served us before, ask, "Where's Grandpa?"
great song!! One of my favorites of loudon!! Thank you for uploading this song. I do have the album History but is was a while ago since i heard this.
This is the most moving song on the album History, a song about the death of his father (in 1988).
I bought the CD when it was released in 1992 and in early 1993 my father died too. Throughout that time, I played this song CONSTANTLY and I think it really helped me a lot. Other Loudon fans I know have similar stories.
Six years later, Belfast 1999, I saw him sing the song live. In the same show he sang Your Mother and I and as he did, the tears ran down his face. Moving times . . . . .
A great song from a truly great and under-appreciated album.

This song breaks my heart over and over, and I keep listening to it, sobbing onto my keyboard.
