  • What gives?

  • I like that bit near the end.. :$

  • This is some serious quality timestretch effect.. No glitching at all. A lot smoother than conventional wave/sample stretch.

    Cool!

  • Awesome. Sounds like the soundtrack to the movie. Creepy!

  • intriguing yet so enigmatic and haunting

  •

  • I love the raw ambiance of it.

  • ... And the point of this was....?

    xD

  • and that's how the effects are made

  • This isn't just 200 times slower. It's smoothed out.

  • IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL OOOOOOOOOOOO VVVVVVVVVVVVVVV EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII TTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

  • This awesome, nice and creepy! What program did you use to stretch the audio?

  • WOW this software is cool but... DO YOU REALY THINK THIS?IS REALY REALY WORTH 60 DOLLARS!!!??? XD

  • haunting....i keep hearing it long time after play.

  • Creepy, sounds like a chant

  • oh wow, this gives meaningless a whole new meaning.

  • Sounds suspiciously like the "Stargate Sequence" from the movie... ?

    DUN DUN DUNNNN!

  • ok

  • ? what's this good for?

  • @Albinswede Well it would be awesome background noise for an ambient track. It would also probably be useful in an intro or break of a more up-tempo track. Finally, not everything "does" something. Somethings are just interesting, that's all.

  • Worst sound quality i've ever heard!

  • ooooh. Hauntingly beautiful. This is a true eargasm of voice.

  • DAVE, IM AFRAID! LOL

  • My god it is full of stars!

  • lol i got this and it's one of the samples

  • This is high quality spectral, not granular, time stretching

  • IMmmmmm SooooooooooooRRRRRRRRRRRRyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy DaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAVEEEEEEEEEEE

  • Great soundscape. Cosmic. Will all what we say on earth sound like this forever in the Universe?

  • It's rather soothing, in an incredibly terrifying, soul-sucking way. Luckily, I've already accepted the fact that Cthulhu is returning to devour us all. This will make a lovely accompanying soundtrack to that event.

    }:)

  • If you take IBM(the computer hardware and software manufacture). I.B.M. What comes before the letter 'I' in the alphabet? 'H'! What comes before 'B'? 'A'! And what comes before 'M'? 'L'! Put the together and what do you get? H.A.L.!!! Coincidence?

  • this app is called photosounder? whatever this app is, it would be very awesome for psytrance

  • Makes you wonder if creepy music used in movies and games are done this way somehow. It would be interesting to know!

  • would be the creepiest video game soundtrack ever

  • I should listen to this on my iPod when I got to bed. I'M SURE TO HAVE NIGHTMARES! :D

  • it's amaxing how much sounds escape from us... this is what almost every human voice hides, it's so shocking, a real soundscape...

  • Am i right if some of such slow-moted sound landscapes also used in Space Odyssey 2001 as a background music?

  • @FaulFerkel

Now that you mention it, it does sound a lot like that in the movie sometimes!

I'm going to see the movie 200 times faster as soon as I find out how!

  • this is the most foolish bit of buffoonery on youtube

  • @5191263 what manner of dim-witted nincompoop would qualify and spurn this chef-d'œuvre in such wise?

  • @5191263

Yes You Are Correct ! If anyone slows a voice down 200 times slower than normal speed you will hear nothing.

The human ear can only detect sound down to a frequency of 20 Hertz.

I have his recording of HAL and slowed it down using sound recorder.

After I slowed it down 4 times I heard next to nothing, which is normal, DO THE MATH !!!

I tried slowing this down 1,2 3 and 4 times.

There is no hidden music in HAL9000's Voice.

You have all been LIED TOO.

  • @robertmv1

ever heard of time-stretching? (change duration of sound without changing the pitch)?

  • @robertmv1 RUN AWAY...RUN AWAY...RUN CHILDREN...RUN FOR YOUR LIVES

  • @robertmv1

    You must be new here

  • Comment removed

  • @robertmv1 This is time stretching though, not just slowing down. The pitch is unaltered in this process. It's quite simple to implement extreme stretching in this software as it reads from the image, effectively a frequency versus time graph, and all that needs to be done is change the rate that the software reads accross the time axis. Nice software BTW!

  • @5191263 LOL

  • @5191263 Really? Have you seen the talking dog videos and such?

  • dude this sounds like this is the creepy background sounds of the s.t.a.l.k.e.r series of games

  • The second one sounds sarcastic.

  • 0:18 Nihilanth from half life?

  • sounds like music for a very scary movie!

  • Thank You for the mp3. I have saved it and renamed it to "Photosounder - hal _9000_200x". It is so nice to play it in Winamp with the Milkdrop-Visualizations in Full HD-Widescreen... These Sounds are so spheric, it is like a Space Flight...

  • @Sternenmaschinebine wow ......very good idea thx for that :)

  • dude that loads almost as slowly as my old pc

  • This is brilliant :) sent shivers down my spine. Good job sir :P

  • Sounds like christian chorals...

  • From 00:14-00:25, Hal sounds like those eels from The Little Mermaid.

  • Hal O)))

  • This vid should be renamed. This isnt 200 times slower. Its time expanded by 200 times. You could make one that is actually 200 times slower thereby lowering the pitch but I doubt anyone's speakers could reproduce the sound.

  • @phlizmo "slower" means time, not time and pitch. It's not because playing magnetic tapes at a slower rate lowered the pitch of sound that it should change what "slower" means. Pedantic request denied. :D

  • @Photosounder haha...funny. Sorry, but i thought someone with such clever audio gadgets at their disposal would be aware of the difference in terminology. No harm though. Carry on.

  • @Photosounder

phlizmo is right. it's just the sound's time which is expanded/stretched but the sound itself isn't slower. if the sound ITSELF would be slower, the frequencies would oscillate slower. but in this video the frequencies of the expanded material oscillate not as long, but as fast as the original. slow oscillating frequencies = low pitch, fast oscillating fequencies = high pitch.

I'm sorry 4 my bad english...

  • @BobTheRadio1 you're talking about slowing down as an effect, I'm talking about slowing down as a result. Besides it's a pretty pointless thing to argue about, don't you think?

  • @Photosounder you got owned, deal with it

  • @jougetsu lol how so?

  • sounds like a propeller plane at first

  • lol this sounds like the music on that movie, i wonder what the space oddesy's music would sound like sped up

  • @Zharsmash *in that movie

  • it sounds like the music playing while the monkeys were screaming at the monolith. WOAH

  • That's really great. Thanks! Did you know you can befriend HAL on facebook? Sadly, though, he doesn't respond much to requests to open the pod bay doors...

  • @peterloohunt his mission is too important for him to allow us to jeopardize it.

  • @Photosounder Dave. This conversation can serve no purpose any more. Goodbye.

  • Sounds like perfect eerie background music lol. =)

  • Is it just me or does this sound a lot like the background audio when the apes are checking out the monolith?

  • @lroe8 GREAT GOOGLY MOOGLY YOU'RE RIGHT.

  • This would sound cool in a game where you are about to fight a scary boss or something.

  • Wow. Thats actually pretty cool. That would be perfect for an intense sci-fi movie. Something like Alien. The part where they are in the huge Alien vessel that has all the eggs in it.

  • Hmm. It looks like water. I wonder what would happen if you took a picture of the ocean and played it in photosounder.

  • This is actually great ambient for a movie.

  • this is fun

  • Daaaiiiiiisssyyyyy.......

  • I don't know why, but does anyone else actually find this a tiny bit calming?......or is it just me?

  • Neat.

  • And the second half looks like a bunch of guys with rifles sticking up.

  • Is it me, or does the first part of that sound wave look like three girls waving to a man in the distance?

  • Somehow, just somehow, I was expecting Shodan's voice to come out somewhere...

  • Im saying this like comic-book-guy:-

    Worst.

    Video.

    EVER!

  • I don't know how crazy time-stretching like this works. I guess it either uses some kind of granular synthesis or maybe it does a fourier analysis to check the frequencies present in the original sample and then synthesizes it again in some insanely complex fashion... anyone have any insight on this?

  • Nah, guys this was just the biggest Vuvuzela on the planet. About 4 KM long XD

  • This is truly inspiring. Now everyone can make an atmospheric soundtrack!

  • Yoooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuuu aaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllllllllllllllllllllll aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaatttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttthhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnsssssssssssiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiipppppppppppppppppppppppppiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd!

  • sounds like Staruha Mha project

  • gay

  • I would like to hear it at 199 times slower. 200 is just too slow ! ! !

  • Awesome, to create an ambient song just slow a phrase down 200 times! Cool!

  • i would imagine that ANYONE"S voice sounds similar to the "200times slowed" version.

  • @ez2curanut indeed. That's why the comments here are funny to me, it really has very little to do with the movie or HAL (who doesn't have an unusual voice).

  • @Photosounder its still cool

  • this sounds like the jupiter sound

  • vuvuzele!!!

  • Sounds exactly like when he went through the spooky space portal thingy...is this what they used for the audio of it?

  • IT SOUNDS LIKE TOOL - VIGINTRI TREES !!!!

  • very cool

  • Yeah, this is the kind of cool stuff I find in Ambient Electronic music. Cool technique!

  • It sounds like Darth Vader in an echoy cave.

  • I suppose therefore there are lots of Leprechauns in canada?

  • that sounds pretty awesome

  • creeepy...

  • When you slow it down the first time he sounds almost seductive...

'I'm sorry, Dave...I'm afraid I can't do that. Now come and give me some LOVING.'

  • playing this over the final star gate sequence is so perfect :)

  • @tetavo Sounds a bit like Pink Floyd if they still had Syd Barrett.

  • I remember using a program like this once to play the song "Am I going Crazy" by Korn, because it's a song that is played forwards and backwards at the same time.

It was on Halloween, and the software bugged-up. For some reason when I tried to play the song it automatically played 10 or 100 times slower, it sounded a lot like this. It honestly sounded like a giant plane was flying over my roof.

  • Interesting, it sounds like the radio waves that come from Jupiter, I wonder how it would sound like if that was played faster.

  • @dednrurc "I am sorry, Earthlings, but you cannot land on Europa"...

  • oh no hal's got jupiter too.

  • Godammn...

Its the monolith I tells ya!

    Arhhhhh!

  • it does sound just like that doesn't it....

  • i just bought the software and tried the various examples, im very impressed !! VERY!

  • Scary!

    Try it with the teletubbies.

  • Ok ... now that's COOL. Thanks for sharing.

  • Holy Christ this is amazing ambient!

  • Badass, a technique to make unique soundscapes in seconds ^>^

  • nice

  • It reminds me of sounds once used by the German electronic band Tangerine Dream. I thought HAL's voice was creepy but this is even creepier.

  • WOW nice ambient

  • ROFL!! THATS AWESOME! You could easily have made that into an ambient/electronic song and named it "HAL 9000". You'd be so rich.

  • It sounds like a real sound effects in the original Space Odyssey movie. Always hoped to see Kubrick using something like this before, but the thing comes beyond his age..

  • Wow ...

I love slowed-down sounds like this, enough to scare one to death.

  • Sounds like experimental music... :D

  • Oh gosh, it's so cool to click repeatedly along the timeline of the slowed down version so you can actually hear it saying the words still :D

  • So......

......this is what hell sounds like.

  • lmao!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! awesome

  • No it's not, look it up. "The voice of HAL 9000 was performed by Canadian actor Douglas Rain."

  • You've turned Douglas Rain's performance into György Ligeti's Atmosphères.

  • that's sick.

  • This reminds me of what you'd get with Paulstretch.

  • Now I know possibly how CARBON BASED LIFE FORMS gets their sound effects from Hahahaha or the help from skinny puppy.

  • my cousin did this in college for his fiancee! only he took a burp and slowed it down to sound like whales! she said it was very soothing ;)

  • Well, it was strange.

More amusing was the nerd on nerd argument.

  • Dude, that's creepy! Your gonna give me nightmares! Weren't those super slowed down sounds in the movie in the light tunnel ending?

  • This completely rocks! Thanks so much for posting it.

As for the direction the thread has taken, grow the "F" up. Who cares, be adults. This SOUNDS incredible.

  • if you were to speed up the slowed down sound will you hear the voice again?

  • Yep. Actually, if you skip around the video by short increments you can hear what it says again.

  • What do you think is the value of this in interpreting the movie 2001?

  • None, it's just the recording of a guy talking slowed down. Actually I'm amazed that people make such a strong connection with the soundtrack from the movie, it's really just a guy talking, it could have come from anywhere else and still give the same kind of result.

  • What kind of a fucking loser are you? Photosounder doesn't need a math teacher in fact he (or she?) wrote the software which was used in the video. Go hide in a hole and stop harrassing people on the internet and come back when you've written an innovative piece of software!

  • There's always some pretentious butthug who's got to go around illuminating every minor failure in syntax. To begin with, I HAVE heard "x times less" from a variety of educators right up through the university level. It's called vernacular and it doesn't warrant a visit from the Grammar Gestapo. I know you like to bring shit like this to YouTube so you don't risk your Karma, but do us all a favor and avoid clicking on external links outside the field of the TFA next time /.'er.

  • It's a strange tactic to attack what you believe me to read when it's clear that we both read Slashdot. Additionally, NoScript does away with those nasty ED ads and, to my knowledge, porn doesn't involve much reading. A quick look at Quantserve reveals that many /. readers are not even college educated, though I can only assume that if you are actually willing to invoke the term "unwashed masses", then you are you are not interested in being seen as anything more than a (rather silly) elitist.

  • He doesn't need a college education, he went to New Castle High School, the Harvard of secondary education!

  • As a denizen of Western Pennsylvania myself, I'd like to provide New Castle with what I think is a fitting motto: "New Castle! It's where you go when all the other towns run out of weed!"

  • And might I add that those who have historically drawn distinctions between themselves and the "masses" show limited proclivity for browser based MMO's.

  • but 1/2 is 2 times less... because a half time 2 is a whole...so fuck off with your new castle high school what ever the fuck that is...bitch

  • dude you had 5 thumbs down on your post so obviously you are the tool here. Even though no one says it 1/2 is logically 2 times less...i guess you dont have the simple logical abilities to see that....quit making a fool of yourself and delete your youtube account so you cant make any more moronic posts

  • i quit ...youre more of a moron than i initially thought you were....you will figure it out on day

  • By the way Runaway1956, what happened after you went to New Castle High School? You ran away? *pa-dam-pshhh!* :D

  • Before finishing high school, I ran away from home several times.

After high school I ran away and joined the Navy, where I continued my education. You?

  • Cool story bro. No wonder you're so ignorant. I'm going to Trinity College Dublin, the best college in Ireland. Sorry, I know it doesn't quite compare with New Castle High, lol.

  • "best college in Ireland" There's probably a joke in there... Next time I'm in Edinburgh, I'll have someone explain it to me. ;^)

  • I'll bite, care to explain? Let me guess, in your mind Ireland is populated with angry little leprechauns who work in potato fields when they're not too drunk?

    Also, why Edinburgh?

  • Edinburgh, because they know all the best Irish jokes. And, the wee folk in Scotland serve a better grade of whiskey than they do in Ireland.

  • So I was right about the drunken leprechauns, right?

  • Ignore the troll.

I'm from Pennsylvania USA and saying "200 times slower" is just as proper as saying "2 times slower" or "10 times slower.." It simply means 1 over whatever number you're using.

The only problem is that you might confuse those of little brain (like runaway), so it's probably better to say "1/2 as slow" or "1/10 as slow" to avoid confusing those with ten times smaller IQs than we have.

    Salut!

  • If you're going to correct me at least actually do it. What's the correct way to say "200 times slower" according to you?

    Also, nice to meet you!

  • Wow, you're an epic failure of a grammar+mathematics Nazi. Not only do you fail to spell 'weird', you also fail to find that 1/200 = 0.005. Twice made a fool in two comments, I eagerly await your next move!

Not only that but I'm not convinced that saying "200 times slower" is incorrect, and besides, I'm French and write better English than you do. And by that I mean, I actually can spell 'weird'.

  • Coming back for more failure? Too bad I'm not sure what your point is, 1/200 is indeed 0.005 as well as 5/1000, and 1/0.02 is 50 (google it). I was still right and you were still wrong.

That's what I love about Slashdot (yeah, I know where you came from), full of people of average intelligence who very grossly overestimate how smart they are. I should take the link to that video out of my signature if it's going to keep attracting more failures like you.

You got counter-trolled, let it go now.

  • Do I smell butthurt? Anyways, you're the very only person who got confused by the title, assuming you even genuinely got confused and didn't just mean to be a pedantic dick, which is what you came off as, even though you were wrong as I pointed out elsewhere. I don't see how anyone can be stupid enough to say that 1/200 = 0.02 anyway.

    > n x > != to ANYTHING

What on Earth is that supposed to mean? "N multiplied by superior to is not equal to anything"? That reads like gobbledegook to me.

  • I suggest you use the built in calculator that windows (or whatever OS you use) has.
