@avionicswirenut i could seriously picture a rebirth of this show, it will never replace what the show could have been back then. BSG paved the way in today's standards, actually in my opinion the new BSG is just SAAB with vipers instead of hammerheads. only if another station would by the rights off of Fox.
Great show, the effects aren't bad either. I just bought this and the Wing Commander movie on dvd. This show kinda reminds me a bit of Wing Commander the videos games.
The show would have been better if there was more of this and good plot, more personal interaction with the enemy rather then those boring philosophy discussions and the main charas ALL THE TIME fighting their own demons... I enjoyed it though but the end was the most unsatisfying ever on TV.
This was a great universe, but you could tell it was on a shoestring. there were a lot of episodes where the cast seemed to be defending a hole in the ground of the studio lot (usually in the dark) cos it was cheaper than making more CGI of the Hammerheads.
yeah, and Fox won't cast many extras for infantry or pilots...also the plot focuses on 5 squad members, their coronel, their boss and the fucking corporate interests over mankind well being.
For anyone who hasnt figured it out, take a P-51 mustang model and flip it upside down, then make the tail the front, chop off the propeller in what is now the back, and ta-da, you get a space Hammerhead. Take a good look at the design and you will see this is exactly what they did. I like hammerheads, but now when I see them I think upside down mustang with its nose removed flying backwards...ruins it for me.
Read what I wrote, you START with a p-51, take off the prop and nose, flip it over, put a cockpit atop the former bottom of the plane near the tail which is now the nose, you extend the tail wings, play with a few edges, and its 100% match. I have walked next to and examined an actual functioning P51 at an air show. I know the model. Its ok, people who worked on the show say they used real WW2 models as inspiration, even the larger ships have gun turrets with men operating guns like in a B-17.
To the pilot/grounpounder debate. Other than FAC's pilots don't usually do ground ops. Some Nav's do, but thats another post. XD As for the Marines. Yes your main job may be flying, however as a Marine you are a rifleman first, pilot second....
"You're either a fighter pilot or a groundpounder, you can't be both." - Weldon
I guess they wanted to save money on actors. To have one set of main characters as pilots and another set of actors as combat Marines would cost twice as much.
And, in the Corps, pilots are also Forward Air Controllers on the ground, so it is feasible. (Air Force F.A.C.s are special ops, not pilots).
@TonyN737 >"Air Force F.A.C.s are special ops, not pilots."
Whaaaat? The AF FACs to which you refer are Enlisteds. If you want to compare officer-to-officer, which is what pilots are, then you best not forget the Air Liaison Officers. ALOs are indeed officer-pilots who roll with the ground pounders doing FAC duty. They're attached to Maneuver Units on a higher level (Division or Brigade TOC) than their Enlisted subordinates. See AFSC 13L.
In Vietnam, AF FACs were officers and pilots. My Dad did 2 tours as a FAC ---- AND lived! 50+% didn't. He flew O-1 (Cessna 170). He also flew B-58s and B-52s before and after VN. Google FAC Association. I'd ask him, but he died in 1993.
@jdpfu459 That was Vietnam, and I know about the Bird Dog flyers. I'm prior-Air Force. The AF stopped doing that sometime in the 80s. The closest thing we have to a Flying FAC today are those few F-16 and A-10 pilots trained in that sort of Air Battle Manangement, but it's not their Primary Specialty. Otherwise the term FAC is colloquial referral to those Tactical Air Controllers on the ground, regardless of rank. Been true as of last decade.
I like "soft" science fiction as much as the next guy, but trained pilots that spend most of their missions on the ground simply isn't the way any military works.
That and all the space flights with sound and tilting into a turn - there is no air.
OTOH, I know almost nothing about the need to tell a story in a movie and for watchers to "connect" to a character on some level.
I thought it was dumb too. You're either a fighter pilot or a groundpounder, you can't be both. I can understand crosstraining, where they must have an education in both ground combat and space combat, but there is no way they could be fully proficient in both
But in the marines you have pilots and ground troups they don't do both jobs. You get a squadron full of officers but you don't get a platoon full of officers.
Yeah, apparrently they got some hate mail on this because there's a scene where McQueen addresses this. He says "I've been hearing alot of biching and complaining about fighter jocks being used as groundpounders. We'll this ISN'T the Air Force! You are United States MARINES! You will fight where and when you are told to!"
@jdpfu459 >"and tilting into a turn - there is no air."
The tilt is for the pilot's benefit. Spinning on a wild Yaw rate during combat maneuvers is much harder for your SA and G-loading than if you Rolled first, then Pitched up into your intended Vector. The Roll Turn isn't strictly for atmospheric flight.
when did any company ever care for what the viewers or fans or users want? they only care about money or rateings, this show was great but by the end the rateings was dropping so they canceled it simple.
That was a hell of a show!!!

I loved the hammerheads, actually all of the "ships" in this series were great.

Pity that there are no hammerheads like those in SAAB nowadays... Harriers are closest things to SA43's but they don't fly in space... pity

Do you even know what a p51 looks like. As the bastardised version you have cocked up looks nothing like a hammerhead.
