hey I'm getting two baby rats (well 3-4 weeks only when i get them) in a few weeks, and then I'm flying my cat up after christmas, I'm worried that the cat will try to eat the rats (he's a very good hunter - even caught and killed a bird the size of a rat) but I've heard there's a way to make the rat no afraid of the cat, so the cat doesn't have the urge to hunt him... Does anyone know how this is done??

You could probably get the largest rats. They live longer than that as they are the same size as the average cat. They keep them as pets and they use them to smell out the mines that were planted during the war that kill so many people. I think they are in Asia -- honest just had a mental block and can't think of where they are from, but they are being sold as pets. I don't know if so in the US, but outside of US yes.

Rats are wonderful critters. They are incredibly intelligent...possibly ounce-for-ounce the most intelligent creature on earth. And yes, they do bond with their pet parents like bigger critters do. Yeah, they don't live long enough...two years max. ;_; This is why they are often the experimental model of choice...their whole lifespans can be observed easily, alas. They are NOT dirty. RATS live wherever they can, and this one gets to live inside, as it is a pet. some people choose to have pet mice, too. there are also wild mice that live outside, as well as wild rats that live outside. where you live doesnt make you a mouse. being a mouse makes you a mouse.

why do people persist in thinking that rats cannot possibly be affectionate? they are VERY lovey, they are like little dogs. they even play with you and come to their names :). great pets, they just don't live long enough :(.

Just think about it. The rat's filthy little paws combing through the cats fur. The rat is not attracted to the cat because it thinks of it as a friend, it wants something from the cat. Like its flesh.

Rats are actually highly intelligent and social animals. It appears to be "combing through the cat's fur" because that's how it moves around.

And, if you consider where a cat's paws are (such as the little box, all over its own feces and urine) then they're equally as disgusting and what difference does it make?

The rat does not want the cat's flesh. The rat is showing socially positive behaviour to a friend, the same way they do amongst each other, and cats do amongst each other.
