Many people don't understand what "entrapment" is. They think it means anytime someone is tricked. Instead, entrapment only occurs when the police goad someone into committing a crime they wouldn't have committed, such as by threatening them if they don't run drugs or something. All these guys made the first contact and had the intent to commit the crimes they did. It is not entrapment.

Entrapment would be setting up a date with a person who thinks that they're going to see someone of legal age and then, when they arrive, find a person below the age of consent waiting for them. What is occurring here isn't entrapment, as the person is made well-aware that their chat-partner is underage, and in all frankness you can sue for whatever you want. Once the lawsuit actually goes through and it is declared entrapment, you can talk. Not before.

He mentioned that it came close to entrapment, and the all the reporters who wrote on this story, who think like you and don't understand what entrapment really is, wrote headlines wrongly saying the case was dismissed because NBC engaged in entrapment. But the entrapment issue is irrelevant; the prosecutors just couldn't prove his intent, regardless.

And, you're right, the people who pleaded guilty will probably try to get their convictions dismissed. That's why it's so damaging when a judge makes an idiotic decision--it spills to other cases.
