You would need a rather large, expensive distortion pedal. I recommend Marshall's JCM 900, or maybe a Major. Even though they're a little bigger than normal stopmboxes, that's the best way to get this sound
hey, amazing playing first of all. but im curious, because i want to scallop my strat, does the deepening of the frets make sliding from fret to fret more difficult?
Hey riffguy, i recently purchased a Fernandes Strat copy with an active sustainer. i was wondering if i ever need to change the pick ups, would i have i problems with the sustainer. because the pickups dont work unless the sustain is on.
@mydog2134 No actually I haven't ever wanted to I'm no Engwie or what ever his name is I saw him here a few years ago and he SUCKed he kept screwing up his playing
@taximan55 well im very suprised haha from what i seen hes very clean but i guess not...you should try scalloped its a whole different feel to guitar playing...but i still prefer non scalloped
@mydog2134 actually I was referring to Malmsteen but I learned that a while back he either put his hand through a Glass door or Feel through one so for a while their he lost a little feeling in his Hands No offence to Engwie! I prefer a Player who can play with soul and guitar playing is not about how many note's you can do in a second or how fast
hey riff guy i have that same color strat but its made in mexico. u have mad skills, how long did it take u to be able to play that smooths i seen videos of when u were 18 and u were ripping it , ive been playin for almost 2 years and i can never play that smooth its a little discouraging to be honest lol. any tips on developing speed? i do have small hands i dont kno if thats a disadvantange. thanks!! keep up the good work
After about 5 years, I could play pretty quickly. Just remember not to make speed your goal at first, you should play well slow before you speed things up.
I don't think small hands would be a disadvantage, you'd just need to adjust your technique.
It basically feels like a guitar with really tall frets. A lot of people say it makes you play faster or with a lighter touch, but in my opinion it just allows me to feel & grip the strings better. I find scalloped fretboards give the player more control.
Riffguy, thanks for the response. I have JCM900 head, too. What kind of mod should I look into getting it done? I was thinking of selling it but after your RIPPIN' sound, I am thinking of getting it modded too. Can I pack it up and send it to you to get the mod?
The mod I did to my 900 was very labor intense. I had a very hard time getting that amp to sound raw, so I ended up gutting the preamp and starting over. I think you'd be further ahead with a JCM800 or older, since there are lots of techs out there that can make these amps scream. I'm currently only modifying my own amps and don't really have the time or equipment to do it for the public.
I never expected such a screaming sound to come from a Strat. Amazing playing, dude. It's nice to see that you incorporate influences from classical music as well. I hear some Bach in there.
Gotta be some of the most appealing playing i've heard in a while!!! A tornado blend of Malmsteen-Vai-Van Halen runs with riffguys' own signature style licks aplenty! MASTERFUL!!

There is a reason why just about everyone knows who Clapton is; and hardly anybody (other than other wannabe guitar jocks) know who Malmsteen is...
No offense to the guy playin,...he obviously knows how to "play" guitar (but not music). It's too bad that all the distortion and finger gymnastics add up to a giant pile of "wankness".
I hope he enjoys playing for 98-pound-local-guitar-shop-teenagers who are trying convince their parents to let them get a tattoo. Other than that, nobody cares.
It may not be your thing, but lots of people like playing and listening to shreddy playing. It's just as valid as any Clapton licks. I can only stand so much of that. I like to play in lots of styles. But after one or two tunes playing Cream era Clapton licks, I'm bored. Gimme some Chet Atkins or Malmsteen. It's subjective and there's room for all types.
If Clapton didn't sing, only guitar players would know him.
I came across this vid by accident and immediately recognized your playing style. It's all there : fast runs (Gilbert and Malmsteen -style) with killer finger vibrato, some old EVH and some bluesy bits..
