~One of the great discoveries of the blues revival was Mississippi's Fred McDowell, a rural farmer with an unforgettable voice..
My grandfather's grandfather sang this song (South Carolina). The words are the same, the tempo faster. Song refers to joining the Church (Baptist). You put a white cloth on your head, no one talks to you (out of respect) b/c you are in constant prayer & fast. When you have a sign, you tell a leader in the church. A committee of leaders is formed. Then you literally go out into the "wilderness" (cotton, corn fields, etc) & pray. When you get a sign, committee agrees you may be baptized.
