As to the gold standard, I don't see it as a particularly libertarian strength to compare our nation on two failed Imperialist states. Part of the failure of the gold standard is rooted in the international economy. What Paul and Schiff are not telling you is that throughout America's history with the gold standard, unemployment was past 10%. 10-15% was the norm in fact. Currency rushes are a common occurrence under the GS, and those tend to be disastrous for everybody.

We're not talking about a gold standard anymore and either are these men. They are free-market capitalists, which I don't necessarily agree with or totally disagree with, but the new "hard standard" could be paralleled and driven by our GDP. Nobody is acting like there is enough gold in the world, especially in the United States to return our systems to a precious metal driven market. If we become a producing nation again and balance our money out with that of which we produce: Stability.

I also believe you've taken this crusade against Ron Paul out of ignorance. The reason Ron Paul is a staunch supporter of legal immigration is because it is law. When is it wrong to abide by law and that of another country's? How the fuck is that some sort of xenophobic thought? When I travel, I recognize and obey laws of the country I enter. It's what you should do as a human being. There is much to be desired in immigration reform, but that doesn't mean we are racists or hate mongers.

Of course it is necessary to abide by the law, but surely you must know that the sentiment that Paul and the majority of his supporters are expressing is not a weighed and calm showing of jurisprudence. The gist of it Paul's position is that the those South of the border who come here "illegally" (never mind immigrants from other countries, this is a Latino issue) cause crime, take more than they give (not true), take jobs, and overwhelm small communities (the language is usually not so fair).

The problem arises when people are "slightly legal." Most of these people are working the jobs that American citizens do not want. They pay taxes and support the creation of products that all of us take for granted. For instance, California's 28 billion dollar agricultural empire would not exist, and none of us would eat so cheaply, if it were not for a large migrant force of workers.... The issue is complicated, and is part of living in a competitive, free market.

I believe to some extent you're automatically branding all Ron Paul supporters and even Ron Paul himself as some sort of subtle racist. That's unjust. I know the origins of anti-federalism and I know the thinkers whom Paul adheres to. This does not change that I think he is a) a fraudulent libertarian who does not understand the roots of libertarianism\socialism (yes, they used to be on the same team) and b) a populist demagogue in the same vein as Ralph Nader who is more interested in his own arena of ideas than in pragmatics. We are in total disagreement over what sound money policy actually is. The reason for the stimulus, and the majority of economists, even fiscal conservative ones, are accepting that this is a terrible pill to swallow, is that inflation and debt are bad but they are nowhere near as bad as deflation and depression. What we don't want is a decade of 10% and higher unemployment rates, as this costs even MORE. We are choosing the lesser of two evils.
