This is why radar looks so red, yellow and purple in clear air mode. Both precip and clear air mode measure in dbZ or decibels of Z. However, clear air mode is set to a lower scale than precip mode. So really, there is no difference in measurement.

@henrycems Clear air mode is used for many reasons. Because clear air mode is 2 or 3 times more sensitive than precip mode, it can pick up on dust particles and smaller objects than on precip mode. Also, snow doesn't reflect energy sent from the radar very easily. Therefore, clear air mode is used to better detect snow. It only takes one volume scan to switch modes and both are measured in dbZ (decibels of Z). Clear air mode is set to a lower scale, though, since the intensity rate is lower.
@saintearth I keep seeing troubling articles around the web and on the news; freshwater is fast becoming scarce, and our aquifers are depleted. I wonder sometimes if they're not trying to hoard freshwater? Telling themselves that it is for the greater good?
