if the deer is standing broad side or any other way hit the butt of the neck or between the 2 eyes or butt of the ear then there is very very very little chance of wounding or mutalating perfectly good meat!!!

you waste SOO much meat if you hit the shoulder blade or the neck. (the best part besides the back strap) A straight on shot is ok if placed well, but its very messy to gut. Just behind the shoulder blade is the best, get a double or just a single lung hit and that deer is only going a couple hundred yards at most with almost any weapon.
@ChristianEastern Its best to gun/field dress the deer as soon as possible,especially if its warm outside,and as for a 20 ga in place of a 30-06,not sure what you mean,but a 20ga will certainly kill a deer as long as you keep shots at 100yds or less,or possibly 150yds if you know your gun and have a fully rifled barrel.
Are you messed up or something? If hes facing side on you are going to shoot him an inch behind the eye and about half an inch down from the ear. If hes front on, straight between the eyes! the quickest and best area to aim for is the brain!
It's all about Bullet placement YOU DO Not NEED a 7mm magnum a .223 .243 .308 with a well placed shot behind the ear will drop even the biggest deer in it's Tracks.

I would reserve it for situations where you have to drop them, because you can blow the snout off and cause a lot of suffering, which is never good for your conscience, but yes, it is okay if you know what you're doing. Sorry but shooting a deer in the brisket! when the deer is facing you is not ideal as you run the risk of rupturing the gut!! If at close range a high shot is better as long as its rump is clear of the bullets path, or just wait for the deer to present it self side on for a heart and lung shot if it is at longer range! Shot placement would be just behind the elbow on the foreleg so not to damage/waste that shoulder roast! I think um yo go back um to the um classroom before professing ....!!

I only shoot the deer when it is facing directly at me or away from me. That way the bullet runs through the length of the deer puncturing the lungs, destroying the heart, breaking the spine and dropping the deer on the spot. I favor the 308 win caliber since that round has plenty of energy and the hydrostatic shock tenderizes the meat.

Why would you want to shoot it in the shoulder? You waste a lot of meat. I hit one the other day in the lungs and then finished it with an unintended headshot. I was always taught to aim behind the shoulder, and that is definitely a no-no for archery. The arrow will deflect off its shoulder blade.

it's lethal, but it's not instant and it ruins meat, you shoot about 2-3" behind the first joint in the upper arm, where it buldges abit by the abdomen, that's exactly where the heart is located, if you shoot the center of the heart it causes it to explode, causing a massive blood spray, often nearly a gallon or more of blood. and in less than a second the deer is bled out by the massive wound. of course this is with my 12ga 3" deer slug, it makes blood spray out, leaving little or no bloodshot
Regardless of distance the neck is the best rifle shot. I have blown up a heart and had to track it 100yds, double lunged and 300yds. Never have I had to look more than 5 feet with any neck shot. Anywhere from 15ft charging me to 250yds standing free hand. Nothing is worse than getting a good hit on a deer and being unable to find it. From .30-06 to .222 hollows. Best damn kill zone on the planet.

Great job on you videos on how to shoot a deer & your field dressing a deer as-well. for all of those that claim they have better knowledge or can do it better, then do your own you-tube video....As an experienced marksman of 20 years in the military, there are always going to be variables in getting the perfect shot. sometimes, you just have to take the shot you have or let it pass by for the next shot...So I think this is a job well done video for beginners or those that just need a refresher.

A headshot is a quick way to put down a deer but it is a very small area and the deer may turn it's head last moment causing a miss (or hit its nose which may kill it after days-weeks of starvation). Most responsible hunters shoot the shoulder area beacuse it's the location of the heart and lungs and offers a larger area (maybe about 8" diameter compared to less than 3" diameter for a headshot). It's more humane and less risk of injury
@eek2go More humane? No. When you shoot something in the brain, it's a instant death. He/she won't notice anything at all- it's just over. When you hit the vital organs, the deer can still feel the pain, and suffer.

However, I have seen many more injured/maimed deer in the northwoods than I've had available headshots. i shot a ten point buck in 2008 in the throat at about 75 yards lol. Was not expecting my shotgun to shoot that high up lol. Looked like a scene from the movie saving private ryan tho.
newby actually doesnt know where the heart is. Heart is at the bottom of the chest behind the shoulder, Not where the guy is pointing. Neck is the best so you score a 50% but that is an F-.
What I do is just aim for the jugular, I've gotten a deer each season by doing that and they have all been clean quick gurrenteed kills. Not one has ran on me yet
I did that once (by accident, deer running and I aimed ahead of it) and I took out both the Jugular and the Esophagus.....the deer dropped dead...almost into a 100 food ditch! I personally prefer fight behind the shoulder blade...when the fore leg closest to me is taking a step forward...I hit a doe like that and she literally flipped in the air and died..instantly.!

If at close range a high shot is better as long as its rump is clear of the bullets path, or just wait for the deer to present it self side on for a heart and lung shot if it is at longer range! Shot placement would be just behind the elbow on the foreleg so not to damage/waste that shoulder roast! I think um yo go back um to the um classroom before professing ....!!

@2105andrew i shot a deer with a .22 right between the mincers. naughty, i know, but i couldn't resist it and lets be honest im hardly the first. I just looked at it and thought hmmm why did i do that? i shoot vermim, rabbits crows pigeons etc but the deer left me cold why? I didnt have a clue what to do with it! His videos on dressing deer at lest, have been helpful to little old me so give the guy some slack ?

I only shoot the deer when it is facing directly at me or away from me. That way the bullet runs through the length of the deer puncturing the lungs, destroying the heart, breaking the spine and dropping the deer on the spot. I favor the 308 win caliber since that round has plenty of energy and the hydrostatic shock tenderizes the meat.

Why would you want to shoot it in the shoulder? You waste a lot of meat. I hit one the other day in the lungs and then finished it with an unintended headshot. I was always taught to aim behind the shoulder, and that is definitely a no-no for archery. The arrow will deflect off its shoulder blade.

I feel there is nothing wrong with hunting as long as you use the food and you arent just mindlessly killing all you can. My dad and I hunt deer and we donated two deer to "Sportsmen Against Hunger", which will give the deer to those who can't afford food.

it's lethal, but it's not instant and it ruins meat, you shoot about 2-3" behind the first joint in the upper arm, where it buldges abit by the abdomen, that's exactly where the heart is located, if you shoot the center of the heart it causes it to explode, causing a massive blood spray, often nearly a gallon or more of blood. and in less than a second the deer is bled out by the massive wound. of course this is with my 12ga 3" deer slug, it makes blood spray out, leaving little or no bloodshot

Regardless of distance the neck is the best rifle shot. I have blown up a heart and had to track it 100yds, double lunged and 300yds. Never have I had to look more than 5 feet with any neck shot. Anywhere from 15ft charging me to 250yds standing free hand. Nothing is worse than getting a good hit on a deer and being unable to find it. From .30-06 to .222 hollows. Best damn kill zone on the planet.

Great job on you videos on how to shoot a deer & your field dressing a deer as-well. for all of those that claim they have better knowledge or can do it better, then do your own you-tube video....As an experienced marksman of 20 years in the military, there are always going to be variables in getting the perfect shot. sometimes, you just have to take the shot you have or let it pass by for the next shot...So I think this is a job well done video for beginners or those that just need a refresher.

@silentfades Hopefully I'm not speaking out of turn.... A headshot is a quick way to put down a deer but it is a very small area and the deer may turn it's head last moment causing a miss (or hit its nose which may kill it after days-weeks of starvation). Most responsible hunters shoot the shoulder area beacuse it's the location of the heart and lungs and offers a larger area (maybe about 8" diameter compared to less than 3" diameter for a headshot). It's more humane and less risk of injury

@FRURMELLL I agree. When a headshot presents itself (and during my years of hunting it has been VERY rare) I will take it. However, I have seen many more injured/maimed deer in the northwoods than I've had available headshots. I've also seen a doe with an arrow in its eye and out the back of its head still running around. This is an instantaneous death? Responsible hunters knowit's best in the vitals whether arrow or bullet. At least the deer will go down and not need to live with a handicap

@FRURMELLL Actually no, head shots are a poor shot on deer, the area of the brain is considerably small, most headshots end up failed with the lower jaw being blown off, go for the neck, or behind the shoulder.

the problem with a head-on brisket shot is that if you use a 45/70 or similar, that bullet will go from one end of the animal to the other, piercing the gut and stomach.... which is.... NOT GOOD

What I do is just aim for the jugular, I've gotten a deer each season by doing that and they have all been clean quick gurrenteed kills. Not one has ran on me yet

I did that once (by accident, deer running and I aimed ahead of it) and I took out both the Jugular and the Esophagus.....the deer dropped dead...almost into a 100 food ditch! I personally prefer fight behind the shoulder blade...when the fore leg closest to me is taking a step forward...I hit a doe like that and she literally flipped in the air and died..instantly.!
