I am no expert but from what I gather the land redistribution (which was under direction of Mugabe) was a major catalyst to the current starvation. I recall the first thing new land owners did was scrap the irrigation equiptment on the farms for an immediate cash return. They knew very little about running farms. I remember one trip from London to Joburg in which the people sitting next to me were from Zim. They said they dumped their luggage in London and filled their suitcases with food.
