Like some others have said, you just need to get under the bar faster. Pull the bar up as high as you can and then split to get under it. Bar should be stationary while you move to get under it. What you did actually took more strength, though haha.
depends on your goals. alot of people advocate use of broomsticks to learn technique but i think ridiculously light weight teaches the body wrong movments
didnt read through all the rest of the comments, so this may have been mentioned before and, looking at when it was posted, it's likely you've already fixed it. but, i'll still mention what i saw anyway.
i would suggest using a slightly wider grip. it looked like the weight was resting on your hands/wrists instead of your shoulders. a little bit of an early pull with the arms, but nothing major. all in all, good looking lift!
He's 52. No one cares if you can do more than him. He wanted tips on his form. I'm sick of seeing people comment on here that probably haven't touched a weight in their life that they can do more than him.
you want to open your hips some more at the clean. that is where the power is. you are in the right area. think about keeping your back arched and your shoulders back from the moment you pull the weight from the ground until the last instant when you jump. when you jump, the snap open of the hips is what is driving the weight up.
I like your jerk, it will improve even better with time
1. You're squating too much, your knees in the bent positions shouldn't pass your toes; you're putting a shitload of pressure on your kneecaps.
2. this was already mentioned by JDF1972, the elbows are too close to the knees, spread your arms apart half an inch more so even if you can't raise your elbows, you wont hit your knees regardless.
3. Wear a hernia belt, it would suck big time if you got one. Not sure how much they cost, I always borrow at my university gym.
Search on google what a hernia is... the belt is to prevent hernia's. I had one, it's quite the hindrance to get one. Post-surgery, you're out 14 weeks (u can't do shit, no exercise of any sort) and the week of the surgery, all you gotta do is lie down on your bed. I had one before; worst time of my life - what sucks even more is once you're back in action, you're really out of shape, endurance/strength have decreased tenfold.
argh okay, well i cant stop thinking that it will mostly occur if you have allways trained with belt and one day skip to train without.
but if you have trained without the welt all the time, then you body is used to it and the chance of getting it is small.
i mean my dad became the danish heavyweight champ in snatch and silver in total, and he did it without any kind of gear AT all, and he never had such problems
please no offence but your advice is absolutely wrong, when you squat your knees can go past your toes, (trying to avoid this will yes decrease the torquee on your knees but increase it tenfold on your hips). You do NOT need a belt, lift smart and you're core muscle will take care of that issue, i.e. watch?v=aPfHtLdduD4&feature=related
The man is 55 years old now, his knee-caps are more vulnerable to injury than someone who is younger. I recommended the belt so that it will prevent a hernia.
If you want to blow your kneecaps and get a hernia, that's fine with me.
stfu. Olympic weightlifing will help to strenghten your core and leg muscles, any of those things you told won't happen if he's got the technique down.
Constructive comments: Your elbows practically touched your legs - that is not good. Get your elbows higher. Work on your regular back squats and front squats to build some bulk and power in your quads. Working on both strict shoulder presses and jerk presses to build some bulk and power upstairs.
solid lift keep working the olympic lifts they are the best way to train. one thing to think about, you brought the bar down low with you. It's a quick pull and drop under the bar not front squatting the bar down. You're front squatting and exploding up. If you slow mo the video where you racked the bar, you'll see you just sit down with the bar for the sake of going down. no wasted movement. good luck keep going strong.
hey ur squat is good the only thng is u pull to far as soon as the bar passes ur knees ur should thigh bounce if your comfortable with it then shrug your shoulders but start downwatds with ur body u should catch the bar thigh high then drop to a squat and as far as jerk look pretty good maybe widen your hands a lilltle bit and make sure to step through the weight looks good for beginner sorry for long post!!
that was a power clean with a front squat afterwards. sorry you aint gonna lift much like that. exploded up and then catch the bar at the bottom of a front squat.
first off not bad for being 52. although your felxibility does seem good i think that you need to work on shoulder flexibility.. your elbows are pointed down. i have a video of myself at nationals. ive been doing this for two years now. i think you should work on getting more triple extension. (ankles, knees, and hips locked out at the top of the pull) and stomp. your jerk needs to be more explosive as well. i clean 332 for 3 now. comment one of my videos if you have more questions.
Do a search for videos showing the Olympians performing these lifts to see good form. If you are new to Oly lifting, I encourage you to seek out a coach. And if you have never done snatches, work your shoulder flexibility first. Be safe.
I'd say either switch gyms or don't get too into oly lifts, where you're getting into heavy weight, because it's just not something you can learn alone.
i've never done these, but is it hard? im 14, and i can bench that... but in wrestling, were gonna have to star doing those and much much more for conditoning. sorry if i sound noobie
get more of an arch before clean. pull less with your elbows and more with your traps (shrug explosively, keeping the arms straight). keep the bar as close as possible from your shins up your legs. when you reset your feet before the squat, try to widen them rather than narrow, it will make your squat stronger. after the jerk, push your head forward and continue looking up.
no this is not bad, and at 52, no offence, but your lifting should be about 70 % of a senior at best, so this is not bad at all dude... just be confident falling into the cleans, keep a tight back, and be as quick as you can, pull vertically to get a good max extension...,, when jerk, push your knees out, dip SLOW, and drive explosively, keep your body as upright as you can, hope this helps :=)
lookin explosive at 52, way to stick with lifting, my dads 47 and used to lift and excersize all of the time, now he just chills and eats ice cream and accepts the fact that he'll be fat in 10 years
very nice but if tryin to lift heavier weight then try to push your feet in the ground and wip up the weight nice and swiftly, by the way im 14 years old and weigh 8 stone and can lift 56kg....Tom
very nice but if tryin heavier weight and tryin to clean it push your feet onto the ground and wip up the weight, by the way im 14 years old and weigh 8 stone and can lift 56kg...Tom
Try to sit back further when starting out; and get that head up. Pick out a point right in front of you and stare at it; it'll help make sure your back is straight and force you to push up a bit more with your legs.
Also, don't shift your feet around after the clean portion of the lift. Once you start putting heavier weight up, the last thing you want to be doing is taking a few steps backwards with it before the jerk phase.

Why are people still giving this guy advice 4 years later? He probably has either:
1. improved since this video was taken
2. moved on and doesn't care about doing olympic lifts anymore
