Sufism is the mystical branch of Islam; just as each religion has a mystical branch. How one chooses to understand and experience the Divine is an individual preference that is (hopefully) guided by one's own heart and mind. At the very least, I think we can all agree that hatred toward one another for choosing a different path is not in accordance with any of the world's major religions, nor does it contribute to good relations amongst ourselves. Please before you spread hate, do more research.
As long as they agree and continue with the 5 daily prayers, Ramadhan, Zakat, hajj and the believe in la ilah illallah, they are in the branch of Islam. That is just a physical attribute call it whatever, a rose will smell the same even with a different name :)

I can see why Wahabis wouldn't like them, but such reactionary thinking doesn't really appease my thirst for a deeper, fundamental explanation. Simply saying they're idolaters or that their practices draw attention away from God is vague and an oversimplification.

@CaeserAexix The reason most will say sufism is not islam is because some sufi beliefs are not as easy to understand. Sufism is islam, the true islam. Most sunnis and shias do not realize the true islam, they grow beards and read books, but they do not understand the deeper meaning. A sufi once said, if, in spirituality, one reaches the status of hazrat ali(as) then he will be able to cause the sun to rise form the west. This would be considered heretical in the eyes of shariati muslims.

This is the path, this consists of meditation and being steadfast in truth. In this state, one is still a slave. The next stage is haqiqat. In this stage, one realizes their true self and he is no longer a slave, now he is a lover. This is the stage where the bodys prison is broken and the bird is released. The last stage is marifat.
@CaeserAexix In marifat, there is no different between the drop of water, and the ocean. Meaning that the soul has become one with the creator. This stage also takes place while one is alive, it doesnt happen after death. This is when the lover reaches its origin(asl). This is what mansoor was going through. At this stage, there is nothing left, while the physical body may seem unchanged, the soul has merged with the divine. This exact belief is considered heresy to muslims.
@CaeserAexix If you read mathnavi, diwan-e-shams tabrez or other works by sufis, you will clearly see this point. Also, rumi said he has been born from a fossil to an plan, from a plant to an animal, from an animal to a human, and from there he will soar even higher. This would suggest rebirth, which is clearly against the belief of orthodox islam. My friend, this is why half knowledge is much dangerous than no knowledge at all. Sufism is the truth.

@CaeserAexix In order to understand this question, you have to define hell and heaven. As you can see by rumis poems, when a soul is departed form the beloved, it years to go back and merge with it. Hell and heaven, in my opinion are states of a soul. As long as a soul is not merged in the supreme, it experiences hell. Hell meaning being apart from your beloved. As per a sufi poem "this world is a house of agony, wherever i see, i see tears and mourning".
@utubegay1 you keep mentioning Rumi. I am afraid I am ignorant of his work, until my friend is done reading his collection of Rumi's work. Once he is done I will read them, but until then the Rumi stuff carries as much meaning to me as an E.E. Cummings poem. Sorry. But Sufism seems to bear characteristics of Buddhism in a way. But at the end, the destination is the same for all of us. Whether you follow this road or that road, you are bound to end up at the same place. Think of this as a wheel, the center of the wheel is the destination. Although there are many spokes that lead to the wheel, at the end, they all meet at the origin.

I can't help but notice the similarities and parallels with Hinduism. It is quite likely Sufism arose when Islam entered India and was deeply influenced by Indian philosophies. The chanting, dancing, meditations, self-realization, experiential nature of the religion all echo Indian influence.

I'm not a Muslim, nor am I really associated with any specific religion, but I'm taking a course on Islam and Muslim culture, and I find Sufism to be absolutely beautiful. I especially love the history of piety as well as the wonderful mysticism associated with it. People have such misconceived notions about Islam.

Most sunnis and shias do not realize the true islam, they grow beards and read books, but they do not understand the deeper meaning. A sufi once said, if, in spirituality, one reaches the status of hazrat ali(as) then he will be able to cause the sun to rise form the west. This would be considered heretical in the eyes of shariati muslims.

This is the path, this consists of meditation and being steadfast in truth. In this state, one is still a slave. The next stage is haqiqat. This stage also takes place while one is alive, it doesnt happen after death. This is when the lover reaches its origin(asl). This is what mansoor was going through. @CaeserAexix In order to understand this question, you have to define hell and heaven. As you can see by rumis poems, when a soul is departed form the beloved, it years to go back and merge with it. Hell and heaven, in my opinion are states of a soul. As long as a soul is not merged in the supreme, it experiences hell. Hell meaning being apart from your beloved. As per a sufi poem "this world is a house of agony, wherever i see, i see tears and mourning".

I can't help but notice the similarities and parallels with Hinduism. It is quite likely Sufism arose when Islam entered India and was deeply influenced by Indian philosophies. The chanting, dancing, meditations, self-realization, experiential nature of the religion all echo Indian influence.

Tasawwuf can be sumed up in one sentence: "The love of the Prophet Muhammad (Sal Allahu alayhe wasalam)"
You can not be a Sufi, unless you love the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) more than anyone, except Allah (SWT)!

Bro, if you are actually seeking answer then ask a scholar, you can google one and ask directly. Here, you will find different opinions and most of the time wrong info, the proper answer to this, that no one seems to be telling you, is PLEASE find a scholar to answer this. 1 more thing, it seems like you are trying to justify that liting up is halal by whatever means possible.i say this becuz you are not a sufi but you would follow it if sufism has okayed using of cannabis in the past. NOT RIGHT

I'm not a Muslim, nor am I really associated with any specific religion, but I'm taking a course on Islam and Muslim culture, and I find Sufism to be absolutely beautiful. I especially love the history of piety as well as the wonderful mysticism associated with it. People have such misconceived notions about Islam.
