Haydn was perhaps very happy because he was long lived( 1732-1807) and perhaps because he also was well travelled for the 18th century. He was adored in London, and he was well paid, for the time, by the Esterhazy family. He also was not at all full of himself; he admired and cherished the works of Mozart, his younger contemporary, and he he was awed by Beethoven. He has left us some of the most perfect string quartets ever written, I have played this one many times; it is sheer joy!
I see nothing "light" in this work. The main theme is totally unforgettable and delicious, the strict monothematicism greatly surpassed by the intelligent use of the most varied instrumental textures and the insuperable capacity of thematic development of Haydn. It seems as if expressing sadness was more meritory than expressing joy, but in fact the haydnian joy is so wit and so true!
@upsightdown Each composer had he's own life that he thru! Haydn never will compare with Beethoven life.. simply because The first one was a serve of aristocracy and the last one work for he's own inspiration! not mention of how Beethoven had a lot of troubles that might end up any artist life! But he continue and that the real artist.. the real human
@whomakemefeel thanx for your comment, i'm really new to this... i started listening to classical late last year about december and im just starting to understand it alittle.. but i really enjoyed this song it makes me smile..
@upsightdown if you are still new to classical music, i recommend going to some classical concerts. classical music was written to be performed and there's nothing like experiencing this music live!!
@upsightdown well, that's true, but Haydn also has some sadder pieces, and Beethoven can also sound very happy, it just depends on the piece. But it's true, Haydn's music is overall lighter than Beethovens, I actually prefer it slightly to Beethovens, exactly because for me it is easier to understand. Haydn is both simple and very complex at the same time, which is what is great about him I think. I love his music.
@upsightdown If I may add. Haydn was born in a very poor family. Not forget he had a very disgraceful marriage.
Though It's true he worked in (with, and to) the Estherazy family, I think his music is more joyful than Ludwig's because HE was a joyful person, in despite of his life situation. And it's true Ludwig had a very troubled childhood! (and life, in general). Huge composers both of them!! Great piece. Thank you very much!
in my mind, this piece of music brings to life the vivid image of a lark singing its little heart out...it is charming, slightly silly (in a cute sense), but admirably strong, and its beautiful singing is hardly deterred by the various stormy disruptions here and there.
Thanks for your Grand Gift of Peace today, "whom" is makin' me feel much better - think I'll go for a stroll with the puppydog to the park, to celebrate!!!
