  • No Direction Home, Dont Look Back, The Wall, Eat the Document,

  • Music Movies I like: No Direction Home (Bob Dylan) Don't Look Back (Bob Dylan) I'm not There 24 Hour Party People Almost Famous Pearl Jam - 10 TRAINSPOTTING High Fidelity Empire Records Woodstock the Movie Boyz in Da hood
  • I like that you mentioned Quentin Tarantino.

  • Control is an excellent film!

  • got a lot of anthony in this one.

  • Tommy and The Wall will forever be the best cult music movies in my book.

  • The Commitments?

  • fuck yeah, shit yeah, There Will Be Blood

    amazing soundtrack

  • I would have liked to have heard his opinion soundtracks revitalizing a song, like with Lust For Life in trainspotting.

  • almost famous seems like weird movie to miss.

  • Guy Terrifico

  • How bout the british semi-porno "9 songs"?

  • Thank god no one mentioned Nick And Norah's Infinite Playlist. God, some people just try too hard.

  • Haven't seen many music movies, but I loved Heima's style, with the commentary cohesively interwoven with the tour/performances. Performance-only movies can get boring (strange, since you should be there for the music but end up unsatisfied!); story/talking-only with no full live performances feels lacking unless the story itself is fascinating (D. Johnston). I think a mix of story/performance is best, such that each side gives the other context.

  • Oddsac. I heard someone did a full-length animation film for The Hazards of Love. Favorite music movie tho, hands down. The Doors. More music movies. Just can't get enough. Ray was damn good. I think Of Montreal needs a good music movie.

  • Donnie darko wsa magnificent with the few "band" tracks that it had

  • 8 mile

  • Instrument about Fugazi

  • 8 Mile

  • Favorite is defiantly High School Musical

  • I'm Not There

  • Dave Chappelle's Block Party is a great documentary about what must have been one of the best concerts ever. And as far as soundtracks go, Guy Ritchie and Tarantino are the best as far as putting good music in their movies.

  • Micheal Jackson. This is it

  • This in no an music movie but its a movie that i watched because of the actor, "Down By Law" With Tom waits, 2 songs in the film was from his album "Rain Dogs". one of my favorite movies.

  • Dont look back and eat the document

  • Control by Anton Corbijn is beyond amazing, I find.

  • the gorillaz film bananaz is one of my favourite films ever.

also love anvil and got a soft spot for crossroads (the blues one, not the britney spears one)

  • the sound track for the queen of the damned

  • The Wall rules. So does Live At Pompeii.

  • Watching The Devil and Daniel Johnston really put another feel to his music, so in some ways it helps but in other ways its just.. kind of useless?

  • soundtrack to the graduate!! hello?? simon and garfunkel??? cmon!!

  • My favourite music movie has to be Into The Wild with Eddie Vedder on the soundtrack. Simply makes the movie and i couldn't picture it without that specific soundtrack. Brilliance.

  • the wall is my favorite

    tommy is awesome

    ray is awesome

  • DRIVE and The Wackness have the best soundtracks.

  • HORSE The Band's Earth Tour documentary was probably the ballsiest example of music movie

  • @Gravitymaaaaaaaan

Agreed. Even if you're not a fan of the music after watching the documentary you will have such respect for them as musicians/people. No other band could pull off a tour like that.

  • By far, the best is Superman the Musical.

    Watch: /watch?v=O2sUwuijRUI&list=UU_qBBP_wrHJEjSeHYuLTaEg&index=6&feature=plcp

  • DRIVE.

  • The best music movie will always be Once.

  • American Hardcore

  • Almost Famous is a nice one, Cameron Crowe's background with music really shows in his films. Let's not forget, his film "Singles" really helped meany Seattle bands of that time get some notice. Obviously, it was Nirvana who brought grunge into the mainstream, but the soundtrack to "Singles" really brought those underground grunge bands into the light a bit.

  • what about almost famous

  • probably stop making sense or rock and roll high school

  • almost famous

  • 8 mile with lose yourself

  • I bet if Gorillaz were to make a music movie it would awesome but they probably would be too awesome for them to consider it. One of my favorite music movies would be "School Of Rock" hands down.

  • @punk100000000 I take it you've never seen the documentary 'Bananaz' then? I'm pretty sure it's still lying around somewhere on Youtube.

  • @SageCrowIey I'll go look for that. Thanks for your input.

  • yellow submarine

  • AMADEUS!!!!

  • CB4!

  • Still Bill: The Story of Bill WIthers

  • I think that while some can be really indulgent and unnecessary, movies that are really heartfelt and come from a genuine love for the music (like Sigur Ros' "Heima") are really great!

  • Dig! was interesting, albeit seemed pretty subjective

  • purple rain man. PURPLE RAIN. How could you not mention it? great piece though.

  • Hey Anthony, have you seen Oddsac, by Animal Collective and Danny Perez?

  • RocknRolla by Guy Richie has an awesome soundtrack

  • maaan...Pick of Destiny! I wish you mentioned this

  • CB4!!!!!!!

  • Christmas on Mars

  • The 'Classic Albums' series by Eagle Rock is really amazing.

  • I'm surprised you didn't say Koyaanisqatsi. Great film and practically on par with the soundtrack itself by Philip Glass.

  • trainspotting is basically an adoration of iggy pop and i love that movie and all its little occult references to iggy pop, vu, and their songs. Also velvet goldmine comes to mind which is a romaticized interpretation of iggy pop and david bowie meeting and the whole glam rock sub genre. I think movies about music/scenes/genres rather than movies made for music, is where the tickets at....

  • The Harder They Come!

  • RUBBER

  • HEAVY METAL!

  • 3 times.

    The Wall.

  • BLUES BROTHERS

  • I really liked 1991: The Year Punk Broke, it's crazy how it set up the stage for the Nirvana world wide takeover. That movie captured the essence of the "alternative" era of the late 80's, early 90's

24 hour party people is amazing as well.

Also, seeing Led Zeppelin perform 'No Quarter' during "The Song Remains The Same" truly changed my life

  • Also another music documentary I really loved was joy Division's documentary I'm not even sure who did this one I watched it online but it really was a great understanding of the band and the reason their music was what it was....By the way UHF is amazing haha.

  • A few of my favorite music documentaries are the band Thursday's documentary. I feel this documentary is raw and captures the life of a band that has had a lot of struggle throughout their career and it is personal which we love as people. Also another documentary I absolutely love is Every Time I Die's "Shit Happens" DVD because it is just comical, beautiful, and has scenes from Lawrence, Ks in it! Great documentary!

  • The soundtrack to Tommy Wiseau's The Room is amazing.

  • @GoshDarnHippies best soundtrack evar

  • New york beat movie AKA Downtown 81.

Tell me anthony, what you think of it!!

  • odd sac

  • Born To Boogie, the T. Rex Movie.

  • The Blues Brothers for film. DIG & the Lil Wayne bio (weirdest thing I have possibly seen...ever) for documentary film.

  • the wall rules

  • O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU?

  • You forgot Singles!

  • STOP DOWNLOADING! Bands deserve to get paid. It doesn't make them "sellouts"..If your boss doesn't pay you for your job at Mc d's you are getting ripped off like downloaders rip off bands.Cool bands cant recoup costs from their labels and are getting dropped. We will be stuck with GaGa and Beiber cuz 12 yr olds pay for music more than "indie" kids do. It is also compromising the state of the internet. It's a human problem not a music problem.Give something back to music and the net.

  • I enjoyed Heavy Metal for it's silliness

  • Singles and Quadrophenia

  • I think the obvious choice is The Wall, and for damn good reason!

  • This is Spinal Tap!!

  • Standing in the shadow of Motown: This film documents unsung heroes of Motown records. The house band known as the Funk Brothers..........PS I love Rock'n'Roll High School too :)

Great topic Anthony. Robert and I should do a show on this.

  • "Once" <3 Incredible movie, one of my favorites. Amazing music.

  • My favorite music movie: Hype! Because grunge. My favorite Rock'n'roll genre ever. Go ahead and look down your nose at me.

  • Tarantino Soundtrack reference in your video?

You just gained 10+ Bonus Respect Points.

  • decline of western civ!!! sooo good just a snap shot of the scene and captures it perfectly im assuming......too young for the sourthern cali punk scene

  • My favorite music movies are, without a doubt, Interstella 5555, Pink Floyd: The Wall, and Fantasia. The Beatles movies can be included as well.

  • That tag was unintentional, you can find all of these on youtube.

  • 1.Krautrock: The Rebirth of Germany

    (nudity between 1:03 and 1:05)

2.The Residents' One Minute Movie Series

that's my top two (the rest in no particular order)

    3. The Velvet Underground Under Review

    4. Captain Beefheart Under Review

    5. Nick Drake Under Review

  • oh man seeing ODDSAC in a theater with Deakin and Danny Perez present is right up there with my favorite musical moments (seeing the Flaming Lips perform the Soft Bulletin, my first Arcade Fire show). I mean the music was SO LOUD and the Q&A with Danny and Deaks was really awesome. That movie has a real special place in my heart. Also love the DVD that came with Teen Dream of all the videos and 1991 The Year Punk Broke.

  • You showed me Animal Collectives ODDSAC, I love it.

The Fountain has an amazing soundtrack.

  • interstella 55555 wasn't mentioned? Hm.

  • Amadeus! :)

  • Imogen Heap's "Everything In-Between". I really admire her abilities to... music. Her abilities to music all by herself using strange sounds. She is Midas with sound and is a fun and interesting person. It was a look into the mind of this musician. So this dvd is happy for my existence. Flip that. (watch?v=7dJ1VhXj9IM |||&||| watch?v=GjldKbU4xZE)

Also, Bjork has some album documentaries for Verpsertine, Medulla... And I enjoy those.

  • NEEDLEDROP. Please check out the new mixtape to this dude!! youtube/thisisnickybmusic

  • The Wall.

  • Chapelle's Block Party, Control, Tegan & Sara's The Con, Beats Rhymes & Life, It Might Get Loud

  • The song remains the same. End of discussion.

  • Dave Fucking Chappelle's Party Block!!!

  • THE WALL

  • UHF!

  • I really enjoy watching music documentaries, such as The Beatles Anthology or the Ken Burns Jazz Documentary. It gives insight as to how the artist or artists created and developed songs or genres, and I find that fascinating.

  • Sling Blade has some of the funniest band/music scenes.

I also don't understand why Walk Hard isn't more popular amongst music fans.

  • 24 hour party people is my favorite <3

  • Shit, I forgot The graduate! Great soundtrack by Simon and Garfunkel.

  • SOME KIND. OF MONSTER

  • @cky92ahoy damn fine film!

  • My all time favorite has to be Talking heads Stop making sense...a concert movie admittedly but in a filmic sense....and it feels like a movie too and no just video footage.

  • Once, The American Astronaut<~~~~Anthony please check this movie out.. it should prolly change your life.

  • That Thing You DOoooOOoo!

  • As far as scores go, I've never really assessed what my favorite are. I love Blade Runner, and I listen to the Home Alone soundtrack every Christmas. Of more recent films, Social Network.

As far as original songs go, from the movies I've seen the ones that stick out are Scott Pilgrim, Tarzan, Purple Rain. If Captain EO counts, that too.

As far as movies that aren't musicals as much as they're about music, That Thing You Do is a childhood favorite, and High Fidelity is great too.

  • Forever.

  • Tom Waits Iggy Pop in Coffee and Cigarettes

    is so funny

  • DIG!, about the dandy warhols and the brian jonestown massacre is phenomenal.

  • Purple Rain was awesome too!

  • Not sur eif these classify, but they had great soundtracks to compliment a great film and vice versa:

    New Jack City

    Set It Off

    Belly

    Dead Presidents

    Colors

  • DIG! is by far the best music documentary ever

  • My favorite music movie is Interstella 5555. I remember watching part of it on Toonami or something when I was a kid, and then I spent forever trying to find out who made the songs used in it lol.

  • I can't wait for Shut Up and Play the Hits......

  • The Wall is by far my favorite music movie. Allthough, I kinda like Tenacious D aswell, even though I'm not that into Tenacious D's music (except when it's in the movie)...

  • Purple Rain, ya big dummy!

  • I would say my favorite music film is Fantasia. My god how can you top that.

I remember to be my very first early child film memory. The magician, the dancing hippos and shit. And sexy lady ponies! waw.

As for the music well Beethoven, Bach, Tchaïkovski, etc.

  • High Fidelity. I know it's actually based on a novel but I think that both the novel and the film are a labour of love of music and what it means to people. The main character, Rob, reflects on his top 5 everythings throughout the film, several of them being songs attributed to different situations. The songs selected from beginning to end reflect the feelings of his character.

  • Good question. I personally love movies centered around music. Top two for me are Interstella 5555 and Fantaisia. Great ways to tell a story or capture a feeling through pictures and sound. Also, Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage is a really soiled rock doc to check out.

  • Meeting people is easy

  • My favourite music film is Dig!. It's a great study of how Anton Newcombe's self destructive personality destroys The Brian Jonestown Massacre's chances for success.

  • Control, SLC Punk, American Hardcore, We Jam Econo

  • Do The Right Thing (1989 Spike Lee) Grew up with it seminal

  • WHY U NO MENTION WILD STYLE HUH??? KILL YOU

  • Lost In Translation, Jackie Brown, Steak or The Boat That Rocked (well yeah).

  • Control

  • Song Remains the Same, The Wall, Spinal Tap

  • Krautrock Documentary

I just like how personal it got, and it gave me a whole new appreciation for Krautrock in general

  • The Wall is the best "music movie" I've ever seen. Rock and Roll High School is one of the best hilaribad films, I've ever seen.

  • The Wall, any of the Beatles, Tommy, 8 Mile. Rock Operas are cool when they're turned into movies. Documentaries are just okay...

  • I know somebody's probably already said it, but Insterstella 5555 was def my favorite music movie

  • A HARD DAY'S NIGHT. PERIOD.

  • The Last Waltz, what else?

  • QUADROPHENIA

  • as i see it the clockwork orange is a music movie, and one of my favourite movies of all

  • Anton Corbijin's "Control - Love will tear us apart" (The Story of Joy Division)

  • CAN'T STOP THE MUSIC!

  • A COOSSBYY SWEEATEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

  • As for The Wall, it's not for the not for the easily-scared people - thus, welcome to my world ;)

  • The Strokes' In Transit simply IS the best amateur home/tour-video - not only for the funny moments and is an in-depth view at the band, but also some kind of magic, appeal. As, I think, Nick Valensi says at the very beginning, filming Niko Fraiture getting up for party, "this makes a great movie, man". Prophetic words.

P.S. I hate the Tron OST. Nothing to listen to, except Derezzed. not just because it's the only Daft Punky song on it, but also because the rest is just so one-trick-pony to me.

  • I must say that some movies might be good, like Spinal Tap is humorous and ironic. As for making a fictional film about the band I love as in the Beatles films that you showed (not that I love them) I'd prefer a documentary.

So documentarys with a band can be fun to watch, and see how they do everything, but it's still the music that counts. The film will just be for learning new things about the people behinde the camera.

  • Please review the new Airospace mixtape Aymie Montreal!!!! I promise you won't regret it!!!

  • Grease

  • does RENT count?

  • but really, let's not brush over The Hives' short film: 'the hives, hinduism and me' staring little steven

also rocky horror should get an honorable mention

  • You look like Maynard from Tool

  • Garage Days

  • That Thing You Do. 'Nuff said.

  • Control is the best "Music Movie" IMO

  • Yann Tierson - Amelie soundtrack is pretty damn good.

  • Social Network, definitely.

  • I don't know if it is a "music movie" but Scott Pilgrim vs. the World definitely exposed me to lo-fi garage rock.

  • @badguitardude24

I'd say it kind of is, it certainly has a lot of musical references in it.

  • do a review of schoolboy q's habits and contradictions. hes a part of Top Dawg Entertainment with kendrick lamar, jay rock, and ab-soul. he was on section.80. the lp has a kendrick feature and he also got an asap rocky feature. would love to hear your opinion on the tape. thank you. forever.
