Really like your review here - thank you. According to my research, these Audio-Technica ATH-A700's will use up to 64 ohms impedance to drive them; I imagine that while on-board audio will work, to really get the most out of a set of this type of headphone, you should drive them properly (ASUS Xonar Essence, for ex). Also, several videos indicate headphones, like these, sound much better after they are burned in for 16-24 hours. I am buying these, thanks again!
Gaming headsets are ridiculous. Just buy a really good pair of headphones. Like these, Grado 60s, or Sennheiser 5xx series. whose quality is always going to be better than headsets and get a Zalman clip-on mic for $10 - which is better than any headset mic.
I'm looking for a good Headphone for games and listen to musics like Rock, Metal, Dubstep and watch videos on YouTube. I bought the X-Fi Titanium HD, which has its own Amp for headphones. I don't wanna expend more than 200 dollars, so which headphone would you recommend to me? Thx for your help =)
I hate this whole braided cloth cord thing companies keep doing now. In my experience it's no more durrable and in fact possibly less because I've had some start to fray in areas.
The reason why they have that "garbage bag" material on ear pads is because the material used on ear pads actually has drastic effect on how the headphones sound and how well they insulate outside noise. These are closed headphones for a reason. They're made for studios, where you need complete silence. This leatherette material makes the bass more controlled and punchy and insulates outside noise better, while cloth material would make bass sound more loose and would not insulate noise.
@mersimh Another moron.... steelseries didnt even make headphones when these were made. Audio Technica is one of the oldest and most known high-end audio equipment makers, steelseries is just for mindless morons who know NOTHING about sound. There's a reason why they cost less than the cable for these audio technicas.
So if these arent that good then what is the headset that you suggest for me to get in the future. i bought the AX180 but because of psn failure havent been able to use it, i checked your review and based my purchase on that.
Audiophile or gaming headphones? dont compromise!!!!
For audiphile gaming experience pair the Sennheiser HD 595 with the Earforce DSS. For chat and great sound quality experience pair the Logitech F540 with the Earforce DSS. My point is that using external mics for the audiophile headset is not as a nice solution as one would expect. Is better to get two pair of cans that are dedicated to their specific area. Audiophile=sound quality, Gaming headphones for chat. RPGs are beast w/ audiophile
The Zalman... I still wanna know why it's so popular. They are GARBAGE. For less than $3, you can order a Deal Extreme clip on that DESTROYS the Zalman in every single way. The only problem is the 4 week wait for it after you order them... -_- The stupid Zalman begs you to YELL at the mic to pick up your voice.
@akaTRENT So if these arent that good then what is the headset that you suggest for me to get in the future. i bought the AX180 but because of psn failure havent been able to use it, i checked your review and based my purchase on that.

@WorldsEliteDeatHaze open isnt always better for gaming, its all dependent on your ears and from what ive told, where you're playing, like at say a Circuit Event (MLG) you definitely want a closed / Semi-closed (like a40s) headset for it.
@NotSoFailuyr thats definitely true, but for at-home use where it won't disturb anyone an open headphone would definately provide a much larger soundstage and have a nice airy feel to it
@NotSoFailuyr generally speaking; yes closed-back headphones do have a better thump to the bass which can be good, but if it's too heavy especially in gaming, it can blow your ears out like when say a grenade goes off or an airstrike bombs you... it just depends on the cans frequency response itself really
@WorldsEliteDeatHaze I like the amount of bass on my astros (Dont flame, I know they arent the best) and I know its considered a bass light headset. I listen to music with them and want more (when Im not using the mixamp especially).
Excellent review! I use the Senn HD 558s with the Zalman clip-on mic hooked up to my Yamaha RX-V659 with Silent Cinema. The HD 558s feature the same drivers as the PC 360s and don't have that huge mic, so I can use them for more than just gaming. I must say, this setup is waaaay better than the Turtle Beach PX-21, Tritton AX-720, AX-Pro, and Astro A40 system, all of which I have returned. The sound quality is much crisper, clearer, and more accurate than any of the afformentioned headsets.
hey trent how would you adapt these to console gaming, i noticed it looked like a 3.5mm jack on the end. Also I didn't understand the mic clip attachment comment you said.
Could you do a review with the Sennheiser HD555? I just wondering how good they sound for gaming and their sound stage. Im hearing a lot of good things for them.
@akaTRENT oh I thought you were just backed up with so many things to review cause you do a pretty good job and take your time with the presentation. my condolences man, best of luck to you and those around. I love your stuff though. couldn't wait for your A40 review so I just bought it and tested it myself. it's a good headset but I like the PC 360s better for gaming. A40s were nicer for music. i guess a better multi-purpose set. well that's for another time. keep up the awesome work!
@TheUjam i think he's scared to review the a40's compared to the other headsets like the PC360. i've used both and ended up sticking with the PC 360s. He's a pretty heavy fan of the Astro Gaming Mixamp so maybe he doesn't want to insult them. I was thinking that and right when he started talking about the A40's it was edited and he never finished what he was going to say. A40's have good bass and decent sound. but for gaming, I stuck with the PC 360s
@jsnlee102 I agree with you. I think anyone that has used any of the other top name headsets learns quick that the only thing special about the astros is the price.
@jsnlee102 lol nice conspiracy theory, but thats not the case. Thinks came up like a death in the family. the a40 review is written and they got a very good score. that is all I will sat for now.
