If you like his sound, fine, but don't insult those other players by saying he encompasses a little bit of each player in one package. Shit, he couldn't even carry Johnny Winter's case. You're argument is invalid. It's really just a matter of opinion. Your taste isn't righteous. I could just aswell say, 'Johnny Winter could never carry BB Kings case or Albert Collin's case.' Or Keb'Mo can never play as well as Robert Johnson.
And I'm not insulting the players. I'm embracing the evolution of guitarplaying. You can't deny that Mayer sounds like Hendrix/King/SRV just like you can't deny Clapton sounding like Freddie King.

We all joke around and say stupid stuff...Obama made a joke on Leno saying his bowling score would rank with a contestant performing in the Special Olympics. He quickly realized he made a big mistake and publicly apologized afterward and so did Mayer. Mayer's comments were more severe and he's been pretty quiet since. He's a goofy, nice guy, but humor loses it's context when it's written out and he found that out the hard way. No pun intended.

@Theory313 listen, its not like he went out and said " I hate all n-----s and black woman". he said it as a joke. im not sure if you actually read the interview,(which im sure you didn't.) they were talking about how black people like him, and how hes worked with so many rappers. he said that there was something about his persona that attracted rappers, and that you could call it a "nigga" pass. slang term. he then said that he did not have that and that people that think that are wrong.

@Theory313 OBVIOUSLY, you and sarcasm don't mix very well. In the Playboy interview, he was blatantly sarcastic. In fact, I think that John Mayer is the LEAST racist person out there: he makes no difference between black and white people. He's so comfortable with races and whatnot that making jokes about it is, for him at least, not something that would engender a tirade. In fact more people should be comfortable with using the N-word to remove that stigma once and for all. And btw I am BLACK.

Can't deny the man's skills with an ax, but he's still an asshole and I think just regrets saying what he said out loud in a publication. Doesn't really matter much to me, if that's how he feels, then so be it. We know where he stands and I know he won't be coming home with any of my daughters - one less worry for me.

i just mean, people make mistakes. they apologize. they change. sometimes they don't, and that doesn't make them an awful person. it means one aspect of their life is getting out of control. people are such black and white thinkers (no pun intended). john mayer isn't all good or all bad. what he said isn't all good or all bad. i'm african-american, and i know what he said pissed a lot of people off, including me. but get over it. my friends say it every day. if they can, why can't he?

That was a joke. I don't care who in our culture says the word or who doesn't. Learn to take resposibility for yourself, and progress your way of thinking so that ignorance doesn't continue to perpetuate itself in future generations. What's really funny is they used to say one's brain isn't fully developed until age 20. Now, they are saying 24-25. If we keep this up, Mayer's level of "simplicity" at 32 y/o will become the standard and that is NOT a laughing matter.
