thanks for a great video as being a frist time owner I'am liking the Ruger line and thinking between the LC9 or this SR9C.I like the getting two clips vs the just one with LC9.
Hickok45, I just bought an all black SR9C. I notice you prefer the "flat" magazine base plates for yours. Your hands appear to be LG/XL do you curl your pinky finger under the magazine when you shoot? I was thinking about using my dremel on the "extended" finger rest, cutting and shaping it to allow my pinky to have a more reinforced grip. I think Ruger over did it when they designed the finger extension for the magazine. I prefer the finger extension on the S&W MP9C. What's your thoughts?
Hey, i got a question, if you had to choose between and LC9 or SR9c, which one would it be and why?? Im on the fence between the both.. Also, what hollow points would you personally use for these guns?
@DanMaldo2010 I got the SR9c as my first pistol and LOVE it!! I needed something compact and good for CCW and this pistol is perfect for that very thing.
Just a question of curiosity. When you have an outdoor range such as you do, is there anything you have to do as far as spent lead? I would imagine that there has to be quite a bit of lead in and on that hill? Are you required by any agency to do anything about that from the stand point of the environment?? Just curious as I would like to set up something in my yard but was wondering about maintenance. BIG FAN by the way! Your vids are INVALUABLE to me. Thanks very much for them!!
@hickok45 LOL.....That is what I was hoping to hear!! Sounds like I will be using the same process!! Thanks for the information!! And thanks again for all that you do!
@hickok45 I imagine that means you just leave the spent casings alone. I've watched many of your videos and noticed whenever you walk there is the familiar sound of brass rubbing against gravel.
Also, Glock 19, 26 and 17 here in our country cost about 1590 USD. plus license of about 136 USD if you will convert it to USD that is. That is how crazy people here in my country. That is why the only pistol some people can afford are the taurus and local brand names. This Ruger SR9C cost about 1022 USD just for the gun.
I like this gun very much but in our country, this cost a treasure. The only affordable gun in our country is a taurus. So as mush as I like this gun, I would have to settle for a gun that will not puncture my pockets.
Hi Hickok Sir, I was wondering how come you do not have a Taurus Semi-auto review. I have been a fan of your channel and hope to see your take on a PT-111 or a PT 24 7 pro. I would just like to know your opinion on Taurus pistols. Thanks and happy shooting!
I might have said it before but i dont recall. Aside from extensive research on the gun, this video was one of the biggest deciding factors in my purchase of this gun. Completely flawless operation since I have bought back in early 2011. Thank you for all that you do!
saw one at my local pawn shop. beautiful condition!! no holster wear for 299. put 100 down on it till the tax return comes in next week. itll be my primary carry. good choice or nay?
well, after seeing numerous reviews, i came aross this one of the sr9c and the other shorter video u have....annnnnd u sold me on this gun, i went and bought one today..i looooove this gun, its amazing...100 rounds with the winchester white box and not a single miss fire or failure to load,,,,its gonna be my CCW gun, no doubt.....thanks a bunch for helping with my decision hickok45!
i have a the full size sr9 and really like it. I used it for the police academy and had zero malfunctions during the range training, while multiple glocks had malfunctions. The gun had sand all through it by the end of some of the days and it still shot flawlessly. one problem i had with it was the really really cheap ammo. The gun loves federal ammo that you can get at walmart, but anything cheaper than that it doenst like. the firing pin would hit the primer but fail to shoot.
How do you feel about sr9c vs the smth & wesson m&p9c theses are the two weapons I'm debating over to be my concealed carry any advice would be great open to anyone
I just picked up one of these last night. I absolutely love the feel of this gun, I don't quite have the biggest hands but the feel is almost perfect. The texture is a little rough but not so to the point where it would be uncomfortable.

I purchased this Pistol recently and have to say Hickok45 was dead on with regard to the trigger on this gun. The trigger is like butter, round after round and very consistent. It has made a believer out of me. Thanks Hickok45, another excellent review!
@okcjoesos After reading about all the issues with the Solo, I think the SR9c is the way to go. Besides, you can buy one of these and then 400 bucks worth of stuff with it. :D That solo is really nice though..., but if I am going to rely on it to potentially save my life, I want it to be worry free. The Solo clearly is not (unless they've fixed them, but I haven't read that yet.)
@DoleSaber13 that is only without a round in the magazine. If you have a round in the magazine all you have to do is pull back on the slide and release. The slide stop will function as a slide release fairly easily with a round in the magazine as well.
ive put about 350 rounds through my sr9c and from the 1st mag to the last i was having failure to feed issues. the gun was brandnew out of box. anyone that can give some advice please do..
I have had my SR9C for over a year and it has never misfired. More reliable than the Glock, more comfortable to shoot and better trigger feel. Great little pistol!
I picked up a used SR9c on Friday and took it to the range yesterday. At 25 yards it was hitting 3 feet low and 5 feet to the right. I was able to bring it up, but did not take the tools to drift the rear sight. The other issue is the slide springs are very stiff. It takes 9 1/2 pounds of pressure to unlock the slide and increases to 21 pounds to reach full rear position. My Px4 breaks at 11 pounds but full rear is only 13 pounds. A small person may have a problem with that.
A tip for your camera man. When you have strong black or white areas of of the video, it can throw the exposure off as the camera tried to make everything "grey" so to speak. I'd look for an exposure lock. Best used when you're light is consistent as on an overcast day or a clear blue day. When you got clouds coming and going, You'll probably want to leave the auto exposure on.
I had an SR9c just a day after I had it I tried it in a firing range but it dd not fire at all what can you say about it? I read your post before pitolove71 but now I dont recommend buying this ruger and the distributor doesnt care until now no feedback. Waste of Money you can check at Twin pines Philippines about this.
Yeah, this is a nice pistol. Has an old school "1911-ish" look. I like the round trigger guard, the rounded top of the slide. Something different than your bocky polymers.
@Speedogg138 ...I was also bummed about this, but I saw someone in a review use the slide stop to release the slide...so I played around with the gun a little more and found this out...the slide stop only works as a slide release after you've emptied a mag and re-insert a new mag.
@Speedogg138 I don't know what you're referring to. Mine works as a slide release just fine. It takes a little more pressure than my XD or Glock, but it works nevertheless.
That mag disconnect is lame. On some of the other Rugers the trigger can't be pulled. That makes more sense than the striker actually moving and then having to re-cock it.
@48crazyhorse48 Glocks are the best...I have a 26 brand new 1st owner and Just got a glock 23 2nd Gen and Next Im gettin 19 4th Gen....Gettin my 3 favorite GLOCKS diffrent GENS!
@delljack2 Congrats U WONT BE DISSAPOINTED TRUST ME...GLOCK ARE THE BEST OUT THERE IN MY OPNION AND SIMPLE..REILABLE , Pretty...my Favorite Glocks are 26, 19, which i have and 23 I had....and i love all of em..to be honest...glock 21 not to bad!
I just tried this gun out at the local hole today and i rally liked it. I was afraid that the saftey would be cumbersome being so small. but it wasnt all that bad. I am going to sell my RIA 1911 so i can get one.
I have an SR9C. Took it to the range and the trigger would not reset. I shipped it back to Ruger and they very quickly returned it with a new trigger. Went back to the range and it was perfect. It shoots very well and is a handsome little gun. For all you out there who have sticky resets, please don't try and break it in. Ship it back to Ruger and they will take care of you.
I've put about 200 rounds through mine and have had this happen two times. (I have to recock it to reset the trigger) The first time was in the second mag I ran through it, the second time was the 8th mag. I'm hoping it just breaks in but it does make me a little leary of using this as a CCW.
I went to shoot the full sized SR9 at range recently that belonged to a friend. When I went to load the magazine, I found the mag spring very tough and it seemed like I was trying to load the 17th round every time. It was so tough that I went and bought an UpLULA loader half way through shooting it, and it still seemed moderately resistant in the spring. I assume the magazine principals are the same in both gun sizes. Did you find the mag spring tough by chance?
Walther PPS or SR9c? All i'm hearing on the PPS is either love it buy it, or hate it don't buy it..the Walther is a little high for me but if its really no compromise i don't mind spending the money but i've been reading some about the PPS having some failures and now i'm stuck between these two..any input is appreciated. also i'm not sure between a 40 or 9 but thats another day maybe.
Some of the safety additions to handguns may be looked at (by experienced shooters) as someone (egghead engineer or no-good lawyer [take your pick]) trying to do the thinking for them. If you like a gun than they (the safety features) are just training issues. Are you wearing this shoe Mr. hickok45?
@JUKEBOXX1990 Mr hickok45 shot the 27 pretty well, he knocked the chicken targets down but I think he had to take a few more shots at them to get it done as compared with the SR9c. @hickok45 Sir, its up to you to settle this debate which gun can you shoot more accuratly the SR9c vs Glock 19 or 26 (which ever is closest in size). And no GLOCK hat either.
@hickok45 I am interested to know if you still have this (SR9c) gun? I have watched most your videos & have observed that you shoot & enjoy many handguns but don't necessarily keep them longterm, so do you still have the talon grips on it? I don't recall you shooting a handgun more acuratly than this one on camera.
The "loaded when up" print works in two ways. As a safety and as a warning to any fool trying to run down on me. This gun shoots great and it's made in America, which these days means a lot to me. Also, as Hickock mentions, it's a really attractive pistol. Plus, 2009 handgun of the year. This will definitely be my first compact 9mm purchase.
Thank you for your review of the Ruger SR9C, I am considering either the 9C or the 40C. I live in Florida and during the HOT months I want something that is lightweight. I like the features of the Ruger compact. I am not a fan of the magazine disconnect, so want to thank you for demonstrating the way Ruger will not fire when the magazine is out of the weapon. Again thank you for all of your videos they are very helpful. I like how you show the good and the bad features in your reviews.
the ambidextrous-ness of the ruger is very appealing too. and the fact that the stock trigger is nicer than the stock glocks counts too. ok ok, i'll stop running my mouth now...maybe
the loaded chamber indicator is insane..u might as well have put sirens and red lights on the thing. the take down is sorta messed up too. i really like this gun but would go glock anyday, just for the plug and play factor with mags, barrels, and accessories. that ruger is damn nice though.
Hickok. DO NOT dry fire the SR9c without a magazine in the gun. The gun has a magazine disconnect & when it doesn't have a magazine in & you dry fire, the striker or firing pin, hits the magazine disconnect, which blocks the striker from firing. This causes wear on the striker and that's why you have people complaining about light primer strikes. Some say it's the spring in the striker that's not strong enough but I believe it's dry firing causing wear & tear to striker. .2 cents
@pitolove71 thats why you take the stpid magazine disconnect out....its easy and takes 2 seconds :)....my 2 cents.....by the way you said ".2 cents" thats basically saying 1/5th of a penny lol.
You are correct. In fact Ruger states in the owners manual that this is safe to dry fire and they recommend it, to get familiar with the pull. Mine is just a touch gritty.
@pitolove71 The 'light-primer strikes' appears to be the one serious complaint about the SR9C from my extensive research. Wear and tear from dry-firing is probably a major (sole reason?) for the 'light-primer strikes' yet some owners have reported that their new SR9C needed a deep cleaning in the firing pin area too. I suspect many are dry-firing without the magazine in it. My own plans are, when I dry fire the SR9C, to have a magazine with a snap-cap loaded before I squeeze the trigger.
Just picked up an SR9c today and I have to say that it feels better in the hand than the G-26 and S&W M&P. I read they had an earlier problem with the firing pin in some of the guns, but Ruger will fix it paying for shipping both ways with a very fast turn around. Ruger is definitely one of best gun companies to deal and remember it is MADE IN THE USA!!!
I have a Ruger SR9, and the day I brought it home I removed the magazine disconnect. It's very easy to remove and causes no other issues. You can easily put it back in if you ever chose to. I just left it in the Ruger box. I too found the loaded chamber indicators height to be utterly ridiculous. I took it off, shaved it down considerably and then reinstalled it. So now, you can still see and feel it, but it sticks up maybe only half as high as before.
i just got back from the range with my sr9c, i had 4 FTF and 2 FTE in the first 20 shots. After that it performed flawlessly, quick break in after 250 shots. The only thing i didnt like is that the shells eject straight back toward me...i got hit in the forhead atleast 7 times, also i had shells hitting me on the forearm.
Hickok, LOVE your videos! One tiny suggestion though would be to look into getting some kind of clip on microphone. The sound level rises and falls depending on how far away you are from the camera. Keep em coming!
I just got mine back from Ruger to repair a failure to fire issue. Great service since they only had it 10 days and paid the shipping. Storming today but I'll take it out soon.
I just purchased mine yesturday, and I love it. Haven't gotten a chance to shoot it yet, but I'm so glad with my purchase. It feels great in the hand, I like having some of the additional safties (and I can manipulate them easily), there's almost nothing to not like about this firearm. The only problems I've had with it, have been it was difficult to break down at first, but after a good cleaning and lubing it up it functions flawlessly. Great video btw!
Hickok—Love the reviews. Great stuff. You're wearing a Dixie Gun Works t-shirt. I went there some years ago. Was on the road and went way out of my way (even spent the night in town). Turned out to be one of the worst experiences of my long life. Spent more than a full hour walking around looking at stuff and no one said hello, may I help you, what the hell do you want, get the fuck out of here—nothing! I planned on spending big money, but screw them. BUT, your reviews are tops.
Great shooting... Im trying to buy that gun asap. Currently waiting for the gun store close to my home to get some more in stock.

I have put 900 rounds down range and my slide will not release with 1 hand but I love and trust this gun. It shoots flawless
Kayakbaker1006 4 months ago
@Kayakbaker1006 It is not a slide release, it is a slide stop.

I have had my SR9C for over a year and it has never misfired. More reliable than the Glock, more comfortable to shoot and better trigger feel. Great little pistol!

Hasn't anyone commented on that awesome shirt he is wearing ??
MrSuperstar567 4 months ago

Yeah, this is a nice pistol. Has an old school "1911-ish" look. I like the round trigger guard, the rounded top of the slide. Something different than your bocky polymers.

Just shot one today. VERY unhappy with the slide stop not being a slide release. It shot great, but that was a peeve. :/
Speedogg138 4 months ago
@Speedogg138 ...I was also bummed about this, but I saw someone in a review use the slide stop to release the slide...so I played around with the gun a little more and found this out...the slide stop only works as a slide release after you've emptied a mag and re-insert a new mag.
mccoycm 4 months ago
@mccoycm Interesting. I still wouldn't want that though. I want it to work as intended all the time. :)
Speedogg138 4 months ago
@Speedogg138 I don't know what you're referring to. Mine works as a slide release just fine. It takes a little more pressure than my XD or Glock, but it works nevertheless.

quasienbaker123 5 months ago
@quasienbaker123 The barrel isn't stationary. It moves when the gun is cycling and the rear comes down so the next round is easier to load.
360andy998 5 months ago
how would you compare the sr9c to the sr40?
fishblade2 5 months ago
That mag disconnect is lame. On some of the other Rugers the trigger can't be pulled. That makes more sense than the striker actually moving and then having to re-cock it.

Ultratron100 6 months ago
@Ultratron100
I've put about 200 rounds through mine and have had this happen two times. (I have to recock it to reset the trigger) The first time was in the second mag I ran through it, the second time was the 8th mag. I'm hoping it just breaks in but it does make me a little leary of using this as a CCW.

renissant 7 months ago
I went to shoot the full sized SR9 at range recently that belonged to a friend. When I went to load the magazine, I found the mag spring very tough and it seemed like I was trying to load the 17th round every time. It was so tough that I went and bought an UpLULA loader half way through shooting it, and it still seemed moderately resistant in the spring. I assume the magazine principals are the same in both gun sizes. Did you find the mag spring tough by chance?

Some of the safety additions to handguns may be looked at (by experienced shooters) as someone (egghead engineer or no-good lawyer [take your pick]) trying to do the thinking for them. If you like a gun than they (the safety features) are just training issues. Are you wearing this shoe Mr. hickok45?
okcjoesos 7 months ago
@JUKEBOXX1990 Mr hickok45 shot the 27 pretty well, he knocked the chicken targets down but I think he had to take a few more shots at them to get it done as compared with the SR9c. @hickok45 Sir, its up to you to settle this debate which gun can you shoot more accuratly the SR9c vs Glock 19 or 26 (which ever is closest in size). And no GLOCK hat either.
okcjoesos 7 months ago
@hickok45 I am interested to know if you still have this (SR9c) gun? I have watched most your videos & have observed that you shoot & enjoy many handguns but don't necessarily keep them longterm, so do you still have the talon grips on it? I don't recall you shooting a handgun more acuratly than this one on camera.
okcjoesos 7 months ago
@okcjoesos iono man he shots tht glock27 pretty damn good
JUKEBOXX1990 7 months ago
The "loaded when up" print works in two ways. As a safety and as a warning to any fool trying to run down on me. This gun shoots great and it's made in America, which these days means a lot to me. Also, as Hickock mentions, it's a really attractive pistol. Plus, 2009 handgun of the year. This will definitely be my first compact 9mm purchase.
renissant 7 months ago
Thank you for your review of the Ruger SR9C, I am considering either the 9C or the 40C. I live in Florida and during the HOT months I want something that is lightweight. I like the features of the Ruger compact. I am not a fan of the magazine disconnect, so want to thank you for demonstrating the way Ruger will not fire when the magazine is out of the weapon. Again thank you for all of your videos they are very helpful. I like how you show the good and the bad features in your reviews.

the ambidextrous-ness of the ruger is very appealing too. and the fact that the stock trigger is nicer than the stock glocks counts too. ok ok, i'll stop running my mouth now...maybe
paikmendez 8 months ago
the loaded chamber indicator is insane..u might as well have put sirens and red lights on the thing. the take down is sorta messed up too. i really like this gun but would go glock anyday, just for the plug and play factor with mags, barrels, and accessories. that ruger is damn nice though.
paikmendez 8 months ago
to hell with magazine disconnect safeties
paikmendez 8 months ago
Some say it's the spring in the striker that's not strong enough but I believe it's dry firing causing wear & tear to striker. .2 cents
pitolove71 8 months ago 13
@pitolove71 thats why you take the stpid magazine disconnect out....its easy and takes 2 seconds :)....my 2 cents.....by the way you said ".2 cents" thats basically saying 1/5th of a penny lol.
SpdDemon69 7 months ago
@pitolove71 Good comments. Thanks.
freeheretic111 7 months ago
@pitolove71 i read that striker fire guns, dont damage from dry firing... could be wrong tho
sfvirgo 6 months ago
@sfvirgo
You are correct. In fact Ruger states in the owners manual that this is safe to dry fire and they recommend it, to get familiar with the pull. Mine is just a touch gritty.
Jaymz007 6 months ago

@pitolove71 The 'light-primer strikes' appears to be the one serious complaint about the SR9C from my extensive research. Wear and tear from dry-firing is probably a major (sole reason?) for the 'light-primer strikes' yet some owners have reported that their new SR9C needed a deep cleaning in the firing pin area too. I suspect many are dry-firing without the magazine in it. My own plans are, when I dry fire the SR9C, to have a magazine with a snap-cap loaded before I squeeze the trigger.
freeheretic111 6 months ago

Just picked up an SR9c today and I have to say that it feels better in the hand than the G-26 and S&W M&P. I read they had an earlier problem with the firing pin in some of the guns, but Ruger will fix it paying for shipping both ways with a very fast turn around. Ruger is definitely one of best gun companies to deal and remember it is MADE IN THE USA!!!
averyst7 8 months ago
