@scion6221 the Pan Am Clipper Class seats were the widest seats of any business class of any other airline at that time. With a little trick you could remove the middle arm rest and use the double seat as a "sofa" much better than todays narrow high tech seats.
This video brings back a lot of good memories. It reminded me of the good days of aviation when it was a pleasure and a privilege to fly. Pan Am was a great airline, too; have many good memories of flying with them from Venezuela to the US.
Love that song, What a collection of Pan Am aircraft all together! I was younger but still remember the old days when flying was something to look forward to. Very nicely done video! Thanks -
No offense but i have been flying since the 70s, the seats today are much better but the service is defiantly worse and the airlines hostesses are only good looking on Emerging Market Planes; along with top service . . .
I was a flight attendant for TWA based in JFK-International (Hangar 12-Terminal 5) And this was the route I usually flew (TW904 JFK-MAD TW905 MAD-JFK) Pan Am & TWA will always be the true pioneers, the ones that set the standards worldwide of excellence in flight ! Today american carriers AA, DL/NW, CO/UA & US have been left behind and not a shadow of the standards that TW & PA set for the world to follow! Internationally, today I fly the flag carrier of the country I'm traveling too!!
Thank you for sharing with us this piece of history. I have not flown Pan Am long haul nor was it favorite of mine, but it truly was an icon in commercial aviation and will be sorely missed. 5/5
A question that's a bit like "Why Did The Roman Empire Collapse?"
The fundamental reasons are horrible old aeroplanes - By 1991, Pan Am's 747's were mostly over 25 years old - Their selling off prime routes to places like London Heathrow and Tokyo for cash to fund US operations, the first Gulf War (oil prices) and fundamentally, a certain incident involving a little town in Scotland, that meant nobody wanted to fly them anymore. Planes with PAN AM written on the side were terrorism magnets.
@Ropponmatsu2 in 1991 Pan Am 747s were pushing 22,not over 25.The first ones were built in 1969.Between 1985 and 1989,18 of them underwent major government subsidized overhauls, making them virtually brand new. This included the one which was blown up over Lockerbie. Others were indeed sold off.One major problem was deregulation.Pan Am no longer had a monopoly position on certain profitable routes, and was finding serious competition in low-cost airlines such as "Peoplexpress".
Yes I remember WELL I got trapped in Rio de Janeiro. Had to buy Aerolineas Argentinas back to NY and from there Delta, they were so kind to take me back to Europe...
Thank you for posting this wonderful reminder of such a great airline. I forget about her from time to time and it is good to have a reminder of the days when things were well.
Unless I'm going senile I think the guy singing here is Tony Bennet, am I right? If I'm right please let me know. The girl singing I haven't the foggiest, but simply beautiful, don't make 'em like this anymore !!!
I worked for Mexicana Airlines in SFO during the early 80's and Pan Am gave us "Honeymoon tickets around the world". AHH!! Those were the "Classy" days. Thank you Pan Am!!
Great video. All your Pan Am videos remind me of how much I loved flying on them as a kid. Only a handful of airlines now still capture that glamor. Sadly none of them are in the U.S.
You're right. I can't imagine what U.S. airlines every had that glamour post-1980s or so. Pan Am had that and maybe TWA but that's about it. KLM, British Airways, Lufthansa also used to have that glamour. The only ones now are really Asian airlines, namely Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and maybe Thai? What other ones....?
I just flew on a Lufthansa flight from LAX to MUN to Athens and back. To be honest, Lufthansa STILL makes flying fun and exciting. Granted, we flew on Business but nonetheless, the FA's were fantastic and very well put together, the planes were well kept, the food service was excellent and the overall experience was top notch.
No question that cabin hospitality on Lufthansa planes are reasonable, acceptable, and just fine. But then again, most international airlines are at that level too. Nothing to complain about but also nothing to write home about. I was on Lufthansa from Vancouver to Luanda (via Frankfurt) and it was just fine.
The airlines that really offer the special experiences now tend to be the Asian ones (and I include Arab ones such as Emirates) since they are Asians too.
P.S. Just pointing out that Arabs are Asians too because in the Anglo world (or perhaps Western word at large) Arabs are often forgotten to be part of Asia.
What a wonderful world, that could be questioned... what wonderful footage, that cannot. I honestly cannot recall seeing such a wide variety of Pan Am aircraft captured in one video before. You also got a snippet of TWA which was a nice surprise too, and a few of Concorde, amazing, steady, well captured, well edited and all too sadly, history. There seemed to be such loyalty to the old airlines, they were more than just "buses in the sky", shame we can't get back to that. Thank you.
very nice, i often wonder whats wrong with this world these days to make me wanna cry hard every time a see a vid like this from the distant past its just not the same any more its awful, truly nice video mate its all we have now.
WOW! Absolutely beautiful! I often reflect on my days as a Pan Am flight attendant. What my life was like back then and how different it is now. It's like I have to pinch myself to know it wasn't just a dream, it was reality at one time....
Great quality, great song, a great video and airline. They were the last real "classic" airline of the skies. If Pan Am had the security of today, they would have no problem with safety.
"What A Wonderful World"; lyrics Louis Armstrong, Songwriters: Thiele, Robert; Weiss, George David. This was performed by Tony Bennett and K.D. Lang, 2002.
As a Pan Am Flight Attendant based at JFK during this era, this footage brought back some very special memories. Thank you for posting this and allowing those of us who were a part of Pan Am, to experience who we were then, and who we are now. But most of all, to remind us that we were all part of something truly remarkable.
so,this was the one that was supposed to make the first scheduled passenger flight,in 1970,but broke down at the last minute,so they took n736pa instead, which was later lost at tenerife....
I have also a full quality DV version and there I can read N733PA. With the following information from a database: Clipper Air Express N733PA Boeing 747-121 19640 1969 1991 Ex Pride of the Sea

Dear All,
I have some questions about psychology:
(1) Why do we love flying?
(2) Why do we feel more happy and optimistic when watching airlines' TV commercial?
(3) Why does flying is an representation of culture diversity?
(4) Why do we think that aerospace service and industry are representations of leadership and "working together"?
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE for your creative ideas and brainstorm!!! :)
