Really though, it all boils down to this...an opinion really can't be argued one way or another, because at the end of the day it all boils down to personal taste.
yeah, because inventing the double guitar and quad guitar, being voted the number 1 shredder of all time, sounding like NOBODY ELSE, and being an influence on a large amount of guitar players clearly implies that he has no style. idiot.
yea i agree. the 4 big bands of metal guitarists are shit compared to Satriani, Petrucci, Tremonti, MAB, Vai, Stevie Ray, Troy Stetina, Rusty Cooley. Speed doesnt make a guitarist good, Tremonti has speed, melody, his writing skills are superb and his technique is flawless. i srsly hate ppl that praise only the really known guitarists, eg. hammett, friedman. Listeners develop to hear something that is better, if they give it a chance. sure the legends had their time, but there are better players
@mrpinkice well dude u have 100% right to like or dislike any guitarist! Mark is plain fuckin awesome, no fuckin doubt bout that, but experience does count! i mean dave, marty, chris, kerry king, jeff henneman, hammett, well they are some legends! of course mark's a legend too, and he likes metallica, anthrax and slayer! dont know why he doesn't like megadeth lol?!!
@mrpinkice If you want to hear great, tasteful musicianship and amazing shredding, listen to Shawn Lane. He is no longer with us but for the brief 40 years he was, there were none in his league. Rusty C is sick, but he is no Tiago Della Vega. Brazilian ripping monster
Rusty Cooley has a Vibrato that sounds like a cat being raped and I mean seriously, there is zero point in being able to play that fast when it sounds like such a complete mess. I'm not dissing people who play fast, what i'm saying is, play fast but make it musical. The person who best does that is Jason Becker in my opinion.
@eroticblack That is your opinion which seems very biased. Neither of the two guitarists in this video would be mentioned in my top ten of elite guitarists...of course that is my opinion.
Gotta say I call jealousy on that one.... Are you judging him from this tiny clip here where he goes for a really agressive vibrato? (which Jason Becker himself did alot)
It is pathetic how people on youtube judge this guy from clips of him playing exercises and complain about a lack of feel. HE IS PLAYING EXERCISES. If you want to hear his actual playing listen to his guitar solo on the song 'WARCRY' with his band outworld (the video is on youtube). The solo is orgasmic, catchy and unique. His
vibratos are fine. Do you really think a guy like that who has forced himself to practice probably around 10 hours a day for decades, not just technique but theory too would be satisfied with a crappy vibrato? Of course not, he practiced that hard because he had the drive to be the best he could be, he would not then miss out a vital part of technique like that...He is a teacher too for crying out loud.
When people see someone that good why do they feel the need to nit pick invisible problems?
Good vibrato is a very cultured thing, just because you can play extremely complex and fast runs doesn't mean your vibrato is on the same level. He's a teacher? So what? It's irrelevant. I'm not nit picking his technique. His technique is mostly flawless, what i'm saying is his music is sub-standard.
Just because you can play extremely fast does not necessarily mean that your vibrato is fanastic sure but if you are the kind of person who is that committed to their technique that they are willing to put the amount of work required to be that good then they are NOT the kind of people who would then be satisfied with being shit at such a basic and common technique as vibrato.
Guys like Malmsteen, Vai, Petrucci, Chris Amott, Shawn Lane etc say what you want about their music but they all have
Vibrato is a hard technique to perfect. It's not something you "learn" per se. It's something you develop from years of playing. It's not in direct correlation with your speed and whatnot. I was going to mention Yngwie's, as monotonous as his playing can get sometimes, his vibrato is brilliant.
It is hard to perfect, but not as hard as getting your alternate picking up to some of the frightening speeds some guys like Rusty have.
I disagree that it is not something you 'learn per se'. Yes it is something you develop from years of playing...but so is everything else technique based. You watch your favourite players and see how they try and do it, then sit there for hours and hours trying to copy it, recording yourself till it sounds right...exactly the same as everything else.
You seem to be missing the point I am trying to make here, I am saying that the shredders almost always have great vibrato not because when your alternate picking reaches a certain speed you suddenly obtain good vibrato..but rather the people that are willing to sit there repeating the same lick over and over and over again until it sounds right and is up to speed not only understand how to improve their technique, but also have the drive to want to do so and not be satisfied with sloppy vibrato
they are technique perfectionists to get to a level such as Rusty's and vibrato is probably the most common technique in guitar...that kind of perfectionist would not settle at shitty vibrato.
Listen to his songs under the influence or dark matter, both have plenty of vibrato phrases, there is nothing wrong with his vibrato.
Golem you are being completely ridiculous. Vibrato is a technique just like any other and comes down to the same things as all other technique does, Muscle memory. Learning the correct way of doing it slowly then repeating it enough times until it becomes second nature. Obviously with vibrato this takes alot less time than to get hyper speed chops like Rusty and co, hence there are plenty of average guitarists with good vibrato.
It is not some divine gift, its just like everything else.
Vibrato isn't in the same category as alternate picking or sweep picking. It's a distinct thing. Many guitarists have subtle differences in their vibrato. Yngwie's vibrato sounds different from Gilmour's and so on. Becker's is different from Friedman's and so on.
Also, define "average guitarist". Because i'd stick Cooley in that category. You are ultimately defined by your musical output, no matter how skilled you are on your instrument.
It is not a distinct thing at all, many guitarists have subtle differences in their alternate picking too....it is just like every other technique.
Calling Rusty Cooley an average guitarist is extremely silly no matter how you look at it. For a start listen to his actual cd's rather than technique demonstrations on youtube. There is some great stuff, but even if it were terrible to call him an 'average guitarist' would still be really stupid. What do you think of the violinists who play in the
highest calliber orchestra's? Would you say they are 'average' violinists because they dont write music? Virtually none of them do but are still paid vast amounts and are very very highly regarded in the musical community, only a fool would call them 'average'. The same applies to someone of Rustys level, his technique is so incredibly advanced that even if his own music was shit (which it most certainly is not) he would still be a great guitarist because he can still play great music expertly.
You are defined by your musical output but that does not necessarily have to be writting. If you say 'that guy is a great guitar player' you are saying he plays the guitar well, which undeniably Rusty does. You seem to be getting confused with saying 'that guy is a great song writer', there is a difference. The two are somewhat linked for sure but to say that it does 'no matter how skilled you are on your instrument.' when talking about how good a guitarist is is pretty thick. The clue is in the
word 'guitarist', a guitar is an instrument..if you are extremely skilled at playing that instrument then you are an extremely good guitarist. How exactly is this going over your head?
You could say he is an average songwritter (I would disagree) but that much is down to personal opinion to some degree.
Look at it this way, Kerry King has written some pretty cool songs but is not a very good guitarist, his playing is often sloppy, out of time and his solos are attroctious, yet good songwritter
No no no. Vibrato and feeling is a gift, but of course it could be taught. Techinuqe could also be taught, but some are more gifted than others when it comes to that. Some people just have it and some don´t.
A gift? So there is a gene for having good vibrato? No I think just like any other technique it can be taught. Some people learn it quicker than others because they were lucky that the technique they started with was correct (and yeah it is just blind luck with that, as with every technique some people start using the correct one so will progress faster, others have to change it a few years in). Everyone could learn it, just as everyone could learn to shred, the problem is not many people have
great speed AND vibrato. It is very very very rare to find someone who has put in that much effort to being really really great at speed and then decided to ignore something as important as vibrato (with the exception of Francesco Fareri who is just a disgrace), ESPECIALLY a teacher.
Its the same reason why the overwhelming majority of shredders also know their theory back to front, if you can be arsed to put in the amount of time required to get the chops up you can then easily put in the
comparitively tiny amount of time required to get good vibrato or learn theory. Thats like saying Steve Vai is probably bad at power chords...its utterly ridiculous. Listen to Rusty's cd's, NOT just his lessons on youtube where he demonstrates technique. There is nothing wrong with his vibrato, you are being ridiculous.
Check out his guest solo on the song 'so far away' too, its beautiful and again you can hear nothing wrong with his vibrato technique.
He is not my favourite guitarist or anything but he deserves alot more credit than what alot of ignorant people on youtube who have never actually listened to his music give him.
I gotta say, i'm so sick of hearing this argument of playing with soul, and playing fast. The fact that you say "make if musical" is almost laughable in regards to Rusty Cooley. His knowledge of scales and modes is incomparable. He isn't just randomly playing notes, it's all meticulously thought out, research and practiced. Listen to his actual releases before you judge, because it's clear he does these little minute and a half videos to show one polar end of his playing.
well, they're both awesome, but Yngwie and Gilbert would be battling for the Gold medal, in TEchnique and execution competition, in ROCK music. There are classical and jazz players who are as good or even better than them
Apparently you never checked out his lessons. They're fucking awesome man. You need to grow up and shut up, cause your ego is hiding the fact that you can't come to terms with people who are better then you.
Isn't that the way it always is with these morons on YouTube? If they cannot do something or someone does something better than them, they can't just say "good job" and be on their way. They have to talk "Internet Smack"! Bunch of fucking babies who need their jaw cracked if you ask me!
The late Shawn Lane sits atop Mt. Rushmore of electric guitarists.
He was a superior arranger, composer and instrumentalist who used his Titanic technique and imagination to serve the music and not his ego.
