I've always used pocket wizards and profotos with built in slaves. However, they've never belonged to me. I'm finally getting ready to buy lights and am looking at AlienBees, because they're affordable. I do aviation photography and need 6 lights maybe 7. What would you recommend for transmitters. How many? What kind? Just nervous cause I'm not familiar with the paul c buff ones.
Aviation photography is a stituation where you might want the extra range. I don't know what your exact circumstances are though. I you aren't going over 600 feet then I'd go with the cybersyncs.
That being said, the industry standard is(and will remain) the pocket wizards.

can you have a flash on the camera hotshoe AND use the transmitter to control off camera flashes by connecting it to the camera's pc sync port?

you'll only need an adapter if your flash does not have pc ports(most canon flashes/some nikon).
