The culture will never change until we get rid of the notion that all the answers to every question is "god." Stein is a proponent of a culture that has all the answers already to the most mysterious questions. If we have the answers to the hardest questions, what's there to learn? If all the answers to all of life's dilemmas are in a holy book, why go to school? Republicans don't give a dam about education like this scum Stein. We need a culture of rationality; a culture that values facts!
@busboysanalogy I'd like to kindly disagree. Dr. Perry + Staff has have a tremendous effect on their students. I was a student at Dr. Perry's school and my schoolmates were kids from all different walks of life, most coming from impoverished communities. If you can convince the student to do well and make them aware of all of the benefits from a good education, as the staff at Capital Prep has done for me and many of my classmates, then the students will preform.
I would love to have my kid stay after school, but who will step up to the plate? More and more budget cuts are getting rid of any afterschool programs. Maybe some rich athletes, actors, or millionaires can invest some time and programs!? The gov't wants to destroy public ed.
@1falconeye2 To educate your kids, you are responsible, its not the government's job. If you cannot educate your kids, go work 3 or 4 jobs like my mom to send your kids to private school. If you do not have the money to educate your kids, DO NOT HAVE KIDS IN THE FIRST PLACE!
Know that though, lots of Asian parents put in way too much energy, time and money in their kids' education. If you want the same results, you need to 1. raise the teacher's social status, 2. being willing to send your kids to after school services, 3. remove parents as a direct factor effecting the budget distribution (so that politics doesn't override expertise) 4. Being willing to call a kid on their mishehavior and disrespect and not worry about damaging self-esteem
But the fact remains...there are a GREAT MANY contributing factors that can shed light on the issues of education in America..it's a multifaceted problem. and Ben Stein is right about the cultural roots of this problem..but it ultimately in a very general sense it's about the PARENTS. STRONG DEMANDING ENGAGED PARENTS CAN WORK WONDERS IN A SCHOOL AND ITS DISTRICT. But the simple fact is in this society that is an ideal that will NEVER BE MET. Many Families are broken resulting in broken kids :-(
Clearly,Rhee does NOT have ALL the answers to this highly complicated issue. But her approach to trying to fix such an entrenched and crippled system is highly commendable. She has many real and valid points and strategies that can and have made a difference.I know so many engaged, dynamic and dedicated teachers in the public sector..but I also know that sometimes they are so very much under supported. Parents are not on a payroll so therefore they simply cannot be scapegoated as easily as techrs
Anybody who thinks the unions are all or mostly useless are idiots.....and by the same token anybody that thinks that the union are highly effective are also idiots. This is not an easy fix. Some of these charter schools FAIL miserably while others are royally SUCCESSFUL!and some Public schools are dismal failures and other highly EFFECTIVE! Some teachers have no business teaching while others are shining stars!! People are so quick to throw the baby out with the bath water.
What the movie didn't point out is parental involvement in public schools. For example, I donate upwards of of $2000 annually to my daughter's public elementary. We live in an upper middle-class neighborhood where I know that many parents do the same. Because I donate so much and I'm well connected with the PTA, I can make sure my kid has the best teachers and support. I'm pretty sure that the parents who can not donate any money, their kids get stuck with the "lemons."
the "good, little children" would all go to the LIBRARY to STUDY and do their HOMEWORK!
They would also drink their milk and eat all their vegetables!
I'm still waiting for the T.V. reality show where Arne Duncan, Bill Gates, Michelle Rhee, Davis Guggenheim, et al. attempt to teach Remedial Math at a junior high in the inner-city!
For some reason I cannot post a link on here but look up on edweek.org and search an article by Paul Karrer titled "A letter to my president - the one I voted for" that should enlighten you a bit, becktorrent
i don't know if i can rspnd to ur comments to my satisfaction, especially on here, but ur statements are painfully naive. what do u think qualifies as a "bad" tcher? and out of curiosity dctrs, lawyers, businessmen have exactly what to do with education? they are all completely unrelated.

Teacher "X" teaches 5 classes. He teaches 3 Algebra classes, 1 Advanced Algebra class, and 1 remedial class. His first four classes are okay, but his last class is utter chaos!
Why?
Is it because the class has 43 students instead of 35?
Or maybe because the majority of the students don't speak English?
Could it be that it's late in the day and the kids are tired?
Or maybe, just maybe, the kids are DOWN-RIGHT LAZY?
Stop blaming the hard-working, dedicated teachers!
I would like to inform you of a job opening at McGavock High School in Nashville Tennessee.
An Algebra teacher, Mr.Donald Wood recently was let go . . . Perhaps, this is your opportunity to prove that you are just not an arm-chair quarterback. I want to see you do it! 3 months! That is all!
Hey, if you think you're qualified to evaluate teachers, then, you should be able to teach, right?
I cant seem to figure out why michelle rhee is seen as a hero: she fired 130 teachers and placed 500 more on strict warnings. she essentially, through her actions, blames the teachers (and uses them as scapegoats) as a poor excuse for our messed up education system. as a result, african american parents defeated the local DC mayor for re-election because they didn't like what she was doing. she not only alienated the students but also the parents because of her arrogance.
@theonehimself so you want bad teachers teaching YOUR children? do you want a bad doctor fixing YOUR children? you fire ineffective layers, businesses, doctors, and you fire ineffective teachers. they don't deserve to be paid/in tenure if you're not doing anything.
Do you think a POLICE OFFICER working in Oakland, Compton, Watts, or East L.A. has the SAME LEVEL of STRESS and PRESSURE, as cop in Beverly Hills?
Do you think WALKING along RODEO DRIVE is EQUAL to WALKING ALONG 54TH AND CRENSHAW?
A policeman friend of mine went to his wife's Back-to-School-Night. Imagine his surprise when he realized he had PREVIOUSLY ARRESTED half of the parents in attendance!

Jeffryey Canada and Steve Perry are clearly very smart and hard working, but they're also STREET SMART!
Mike Bloomberg and his old chancellor Joel Klein weren't street smart. Neither is President Obama. You can't survive on ideals.

It's time to haul experts from those high-performing countries, like Singapore, China and Finland and let them diagnose on the US educational system.

Michelle Rhee claims that she took 90% of her students from the 13th percentile to the 90th percentile or above in less than 2 years!
Isn’t that statistically impossible? “Normal Distribution”? “Bell Curve”?
Why hasn’t anyone interviewed her former students? Or their parents? Or her former principal? Or her former co-workers? Her fellow teachers?
I’m sure they all will have plenty to say about those scores!
Where's the proof of her academic success?

Why hasn't anyone interviewed Michelle Rhee's former students? Ask them what kind of teacher she was?

Would you BLAME the DOCTOR working in a hospital with a lot of SICK people?

Would you BLAME the BORDER PATROL AGENTS for all the ILLEGAL ALIENS that are crossing the border?
Would you BLAME the SOCIAL WORKER with a lot of WELFARE CASES?
NO? Why not?
Because there are other FACTORS beyond their control! STOP BLAMING THE TEACHERS!
