Tape warble is a problem. Sounds "better" because Italian is more lyrical than Russian. If only Russians knew this they would all start speaking it. (That's sarcasm, son.) Seriously, very fine.
To tell the truth, I don't like the late Di Stefano, but this record is a surprise for me. I like it. His Italian rendition is close to the way the best Russian tenors sing the aria.
reduxmusic only thank you very much for posting videos like this.although as you say it isnt the best of di stefano its always interesting listening to him. have you more arias from this concert?
Well said. The musicality and artistry is still there, but the voice is not. Before he ruined it with his open singing, it was the most beautiful Italian lyric since Gigli.
They learn it in Italian to sing it for Americans ?For those they don't know russian language is very very soft and very clear language ,it needs a lot of practice if you are a foreigner and it sound great in singing!
I will, so far no luck. I learned the first four lines in Russian, but it is a very long song... .if you have an Italian text, can you send it to me?
This is superb! This is such a great modern song, its so psychlogical, introspective. And to have it Italian. . . The Russian is so hard to remember.
Meraviglioso!! Just wonderful! He's just great. I saw Evgeni Onegin on stage once in Italy, I like this opera. He sings superbly. Thank you so much for sharing it with me, Nina. I love it!
I found no similarities to Portuguese. All language have words with two or more consonants together. If we take Italian as an example (seeing that it's the case of Italian sung aria) : preteNDere, guaRDare, ViNCere, paRTe, TRaveRSo, siNCero, QuaDRo, PRato, veRGine etc etc. And the consonants in 'dni' are softly pronnounced (d in not dental but palatal and n is like nj).
i got confused because 'dni' is one syllable. But you say it's like nj, so you say "nyee", which is much easier. Besides, the d gets joined to the vowel at the end of the previous word zlatchiye--d--nyee.
@mamaanya I would say it depends of who is singing ;) Just imagine a Russian tenor singing this aria in Italian :))) Di Stefano is unique, no matter what he singing and in what language, he is always speaking from his heart. But Lemeshev still remains for me the best Lensky of all times. Despite he sing is in Russian ;)
I heard this arioso registered for the RAI, di Stefano was young, in his best voice.

Russian has so many contiguous consonants, its hard to sing it. . . its amazing that they do as well as they do
moo7chi7ld 2 years ago
I don't agree. Russian is very soft language with as much (more or less) vocals as Italian.
Herur22 2 years ago
it sounds like portuguese. take a word like dni. its got two hard consonants with no vowel between them. Thats what is hard about it.
