The problem is that this all a load of rubbish. The Focus is more refined than the VXR, the VXR is quicker in a straight line, the Golf GTi is the best all rounder and even more refined than the focus, the Megane R is the quickest around a track and the Focus RS is the most ridiculous and exciting to drive in the real world. Its quite simple, which ever one of the above you are looking for in your hot hatch will determine which one is the best FOR YOU!

I think the discussion here is that the Ford is far more refined and better thought out car than the VXR. The VXR has no finesse and the Ford in this case is faster because of its more refined handling and power delivery. I guess you pay your money and take your choice, however, having had experience first hand of both, I prefer the Ford every time, the engine and handling are simply better. VBH is a racing instructor Needell is simply a TV presenter these days.

I've driven both of these cars now, i think it all comes down to personal preference, i'll agree the Ford has the better driver appeal but only when you feel "sensible", the Astra is so much more alive and exciting to drive, the alleged understeer is hardly as bad as these make out, i found it excellent in the corners, the power is immense and the sound and feel is aggresive, 2 things the Ford isnt, i'd prefer the ST as just another car, but for theatre, noise and character.. the VXR wins.

There are 2 Vauxhalls I wouldn't mind, the VX220 VXR (which is a Lotus) and the VXR8 (which is a Holden!) Apparently the new models are a big improvement but these old Astras are not great.

Both are too heavy and only the ford can really claim to handle well. Years later and they are barely faster than a saxo vts/106 gti. Not much progress to me. I'd just buy a RS Megane

You see more Focus ST on the side of the road than actually on the Road, Use all seem to agree with Jeremy Clarkson when he says the VXR has bad understeer well you and him are complete idiots!! There is hardly any understeer! The VXR would beat the ST hands down! You can't compare the VXR to the RS either cause the RS was brought out in 2009 and the VXR was brought out in 2005/2006!
VXR has been out since 2005 and they still haven't managed to fix it 5 years later! Its a common fact that the VXR has horrendous handling and understeer. To claim otherwise is absurd.

@astraVXRchannel my brother has a "07" plate 1.9 cdti 150bhp which has 236lb-ft torque same as the vxr i do believe not 100% correct and it torque steers obviously as it has such crazy torque going through the front's lol it handles like a dream 100mph tight corner's sport button on they are an amazing car btw astra 2.0 vxr = 240bhp focus st = 2.5 5cyl 225bhp LMAO @ the fail
@Mr330d It's not really a fail, at 225bhp it's just not highly stressed when it's in the stock ST - Mountune crank it up to 270bhp, the RS is the same basic unit chucking out 300bhp, and they got 390something bhp out the concept C30 PPC. Also a word of warning - look up that cdti150 engine on Honest John's website re: your brother's Astra, I sold mine after 3 EGR valves, a turbo and a DM Flywheel. They can start to get very expensive very quickly after 40000 miles.

From what I gather, the Ford is running a 2.5 Volvo unit [Probabily a T5] whereas the Vauxhall is running it's own in house VXR unit. So that leads me think theres more Volvo In the ford ie... chassis design
@defender5151 - No the Focus is Ford through and through. The Volvo V40 family is based on the Focus platform and Volvo shoehorned their 5 cylinder engine into this, therefore it was easy for Ford to borrow the Volvo engine for the ST - The next ST reverts to a blown Ford 2 litre Engine
Why are Fod messing with Volvo?. It wasn't that far back when Ford had a colaboratin with Cosworth. I'm sure that Cosworth have come along way since the Escort and Sierra years and thier development mustbe ripe for the picking. And i'm pretty sure that at some point in the not so long ago that Ford and Vauxhall had a little play with each other.
@DaveGPMoto funny how every motoring journalist disagrees with you. Standard Focus is consistently amongst the most reliable cars in its class, something neither VW or Vauxhall can say... the ST's engine has been around in one form or another since the hot Volvo 850 2.3. My ST's a 56plate and has been the most consistently dependable car I've ever owned, never a fault. Sure they save money in places, but not where it really matters.
@tahoomie Every Vauxhall I've driven that was made in the last 10 years has that vague yet snappy, horrible handling. I even agree with her on the turbo, they all seem to cut-in and out very harshly, even GM Saabs do it. GM really can't make good cars, they're all about power and they can't even put it down!
@karashibass you're kidding, right? Gm engined cars dominate every class of racing they enter, kicking Audi and Porsche's asses. They also have history which is why they command the big bucks at classic auction.

Also you say they win at racing where the car will be vastly modified, thus has little to do with GM engineering and more to do with GM money. I agree they have good history in production cars but so do many other marques, not least Ford.
I own both an 3lt ST220 and the new Astra VXR and I love them both. I don't really care if the ST handles better around corners or the VXR is quicker off the mark. I'm not about to drive my cars in the same manner as the presenters do on the track, it's unrealistic and not to say dangerous on British roads. I buy cars that I enjoy driving and there isn't a presenter on earth that can tell me that's wrong. :-)
How embarassing for vauxhall. VXR drivers always blab on how that the VXR is quicker than the ST but so what this video proves that the ST is miles better on the track due to the handling bein much better. This video proves that VXR's are a hell of a shit buy. In fact my neighbour had a VXR and hated it. Had nothing but problems. And why is everyone going on about the big flabby overpriced R32? Seeing as thats in the focus RS price range but the focus RS is alot quicker there is no comparison.

I have had a drag with an R32 from about 40mph and to be honest the ST well out performed the R32 it was lost from the start and to confirm it when i slowed down i gave the driver a flash once he passed me and he never let on. There is also a vid on here that times an R32 just before the ST i will let you to judge the out come.
I drove a Astra OPC (Opel Performance Center) - this is the same car like the Astra VXR I think so. And I drove a tuned Ford Focus St with 285Hp.
But the OPC feels much more stable and faster, louder, makes more fun and with a much more agressive engine. I think that Vicky hadn´t turnd off the ESP!
You must push more than 10 Seconds!!! On that Button to turn it off. Than the Steering gets more agressive and the trottle. otherwise the VXR feels like a shopping car.
1 mile drag? This isn't Rome you know, the roads have bends, in the real world the ST is way better handling more nimble making it a faster better car.
The R32 is just big bloater, and one that really made no impact on the market at all....
And... the ST isn't even the top of the range, price for price the comparison should with the Focus RS with the R32, since the R32 already lost to the ST, add another 70HP in the focus RS and it becomes a trouncing....

to be honest i dont listen to opinions from other people, fith gear, top gear ( even though i love it ) and mags they all vary, Redline put the VXR in 2nd place in a list of hot hatches with the Mk5 GTi 1st, the ST was somewhere in 5th or 6th. Fith Gear prefer the ST, theyre all over the shop, i just drive them then i trust my own opinion on which i think is better. How do we know the presenters are or not being biased?
Top gear typically suffered from Bias in the past, Jeremy always likes the Evos and the Mercedes, Tiff always liked the Porsches, and Quentin liked the Lexuses.

I just watched a different Fifth Gear video review of the Focus ST with one of their male presenters and he said the handling of the ST was "wooly" and he didn't sound impressed.
However, this review really praises the handling and the chassis, as does the Top Gear review.
It's interesting how the same show can give such contradicting reviews on the same car!
Fifth Gear have a well known Ford bias, anything with their badge on is bound to win their group tests, unless there is another German car in there that is.

I've got a lot of respect for Focus ST's. I had a go against one in my S3 with over 300bhp and although I had it off the mark, in gear the ST is really impressive. That 5 cylinder engine must be very tourqey.

@astraVXRchannel my brother has a "07" plate 1.9 cdti 150bhp which has 236lb-ft torque same as the vxr i do believe not 100% correct and it torque steers obviously as it has such crazy torque going through the front's lol it handles like a dream 100mph tight corner's sport button on they are an amazing car btw astra 2.0 vxr = 240bhp focus st = 2.5 5cyl 225bhp LMAO @ the fail

@Mr330d It's not really a fail, at 225bhp it's just not highly stressed when it's in the stock ST - Mountune crank it up to 270bhp, the RS is the same basic unit chucking out 300bhp, and they got 390something bhp out the concept C30 PPC. Also a word of warning - look up that cdti150 engine on Honest John's website re: your brother's Astra, I sold mine after 3 EGR valves, a turbo and a DM Flywheel. They can start to get very expensive very quickly after 40000 miles.

The ST looks good, is confortable, sounds like amplified thunder and is faster round the track than the VXR.
and the only reason you cant compare the Focus RS to the astra VXR is because the RS is alot quicker and alot better looking

From what I gather, the Ford is running a 2.5 Volvo unit [Probabily a T5] whereas the Vauxhall is running it's own in house VXR unit. So that leads me think theres more Volvo In the ford ie... chassis design

@defender5151 - No the Focus is Ford through and through. The Volvo V40 family is based on the Focus platform and Volvo shoehorned their 5 cylinder engine into this, therefore it was easy for Ford to borrow the Volvo engine for the ST - The next ST reverts to a blown Ford 2 litre Engine

Why are Fod messing with Volvo?. It wasn't that far back when Ford had a colaboratin with Cosworth. I'm sure that Cosworth have come along way since the Escort and Sierra years and thier development mustbe ripe for the picking. Standard Focus is consistently amongst the most reliable cars in its class, something neither VW or Vauxhall can say... the ST's engine has been around in one form or another since the hot Volvo 850 2.3. My ST's a 56plate and has been the most consistently dependable car I've ever owned, never a fault. Sure they save money in places, but not where it really matters.

I even agree with her on the turbo, they all seem to cut-in and out very harshly, even GM Saabs do it. GM really can't make good cars, they're all about power and they can't even put it down!

Also you say they win at racing where the car will be vastly modified, thus has little to do with GM engineering and more to do with GM money. I wouldn't even consider the VXR, the torque steer is just ridiculous.
The R32 is nice, but it's quite a bit more than the ST and I can't justify spending the extra, not to mention the extra running costs.
The ST is the best all round car out of the three, IMO.

I own both an 3lt ST220 and the new Astra VXR and I love them both. I don't really care if the ST handles better around corners or the VXR is quicker off the mark. I'm not about to drive my cars in the same manner as the presenters do on the track, it's unrealistic and not to say dangerous on British roads. I buy cars that I enjoy driving and there isn't a presenter on earth that can tell me that's wrong. :-)

How embarassing for vauxhall. VXR drivers always blab on how that the VXR is quicker than the ST but so what this video proves that the ST is miles better on the track due to the handling bein much better. This video proves that VXR's are a hell of a shit buy. In fact my neighbour had a VXR and hated it. Had nothing but problems. And why is everyone going on about the big flabby overpriced R32? Seeing as thats in the focus RS price range but the focus RS is alot quicker there is no comparison.

I have had a drag with an R32 from about 40mph and to be honest the ST well out performed the R32 it was lost from the start and to confirm it when i slowed down i gave the driver a flash once he passed me and he never let on. There is also a vid on here that times an R32 just before the ST i will let you to judge the out come.

Hmm, I´am weird!
I drove a Astra OPC (Opel Performance Center) - this is the same car like the Astra VXR I think so. And I drove a tuned Ford Focus St with 285Hp.
But the OPC feels much more stable and faster, louder, makes more fun and with a much more agressive engine. I think that Vicky hadn´t turnd off the ESP!
You must push more than 10 Seconds!!! On that Button to turn it off. Than the Steering gets more agressive and the trottle. otherwise the VXR feels like a shopping car.

1 mile drag? This isn't Rome you know, the roads have bends, in the real world the ST is way better handling more nimble making it a faster better car.
The R32 is just big bloater, and one that really made no impact on the market at all....
And... the ST isn't even the top of the range, price for price the comparison should with the Focus RS with the R32, since the R32 already lost to the ST, add another 70HP in the focus RS and it becomes a trouncing....
The R32 is a dog....

to be honest i dont listen to opinions from other people, fith gear, top gear ( even though i love it ) and mags they all vary, Redline put the VXR in 2nd place in a list of hot hatches with the Mk5 GTi 1st, the ST was somewhere in 5th or 6th. Fith Gear prefer the ST, theyre all over the shop, i just drive them then i trust my own opinion on which i think is better. How do we know the presenters are or not being biased?

Top gear typically suffered from Bias in the past, Jeremy always likes the Evos and the Mercedes, Tiff always liked the Porsches, and Quentin liked the Lexuses.
when they were on top gear.
Personally I like the ST, is smoother and more refined engine coupled with precise handling over the VXR made it for me....

I just watched a different Fifth Gear video review of the Focus ST with one of their male presenters and he said the handling of the ST was "wooly" and he didn't sound impressed.
However, this review really praises the handling and the chassis, as does the Top Gear review.
It's interesting how the same show can give such contradicting reviews on the same car!

I've got a lot of respect for Focus ST's. I had a go against one in my S3 with over 300bhp and although I had it off the mark, in gear the ST is really impressive. That 5 cylinder engine must be very tourqey.

was really surprised at vickys comments about the vxr but she knows what shes talking about. Ive got a corsa vxr and I love it but it can be a handful and the turbo does seem to vary on how much it wants to give.sometimes feels heavy then sometimes is very scary and catches me off gaurd. focus is known for been a great car wouldn mind a drive in one rs especially haha
