The greatest thing I think about Denzel is that he truly does not know how great he is ...as a result of that he has to consciously play up for the camera, in essence he is always acting even while having to appear to be natural. on one hand you have this great actor and on the other a lost soul who can only find himself in his work. I am just giving my oppinion and if you can only see that the film is giving an acurate depiction of 1970s harlem, you may need to mesure the film against the facts of today to see how a comunity can become stigmatized by its reputation.

American Gangster wasn't that great with the exception of Denzel and Russell's performances. The story wasn't told in depth enough. Unlike gangster epics like 'Blow' and 'Goodfellas', they didn't go in depth enough into the lives of the supporting characters. They made Frank's wife too sweet and lovable when in reality she would have an evil side just like Ray Liotta and Johnny Dep's wives in 'Goodfellas' and 'Blow'. Any woman who would knowingly marry a drug dealer and killer CAN'T be right.
