This is what totally perplexes me. Once they realized that the ambulance had arrived at the wrong address, and they found out the correct address, why didn't they then dispatch a different ambulance that was located closer to the location where the caller was? Also, if they knew it was going to be an extra 25 minutes before the ambulance reached her, why didn't they send the police, fire department, or a first responder, who all have first aid training and could've arrived in a few minutes.
in Toronto we have a problem with duplicate street names. Every time the city tries to change the names of streets to save lives the CITIZENS of Toronto fight it saying they don't want their street names changed. Same people that would be the first to complain. There has been a death due to this. People don't care though.
Could the woman that died be just as much at fault? She said that she was having trouble breathing, and in her shortness of breath, she may have misgiven the proper address. I mean, don't the dispatchers asked for the address several times, to make sure they don't get the wrong one?
@TheOmegaParadigm You can't blame a person for having shortness of breath and slurring their speech. The police could have traced the call to make sure it was correct. Especially in this case. This is a matter of poor practice on the dispatchers companies behalf. Hens, this is not the first time it happened.
get rid of street names and go with numbers. Tho those can be mistaken as well I suppose. Thats the problem with cell phones. Call on a land line and they should have ur address instantly.
As a dispatcher myself it frustrates me to no end when 911 callers get pissed off when we ask them to repeat & sometimes spell out the address for verification purposes. Unfortunately common sense goes out the window for those in the midst of a crisis whether real or perceived. It's as if they think the 911 operator is responding to the scene & don't understand responders are being dispatched simultaneously while the operator continues to gather information for responder safety.
@HOOPCITYDETECTIVE Oh... I tought the dispatch send the unit to a location when the called gives full information... What happens if someone gives a first adress and then another one at least 20 miles away, and the first one was wrong??
@HOOPCITYDETECTIVE i wish the public could come in and witness a few hours in a 911 center. I think they would understand our jobs alot better. I ask the address at least three times. If it doesnt populate in our CAD, I know something is wrong with it
yea that was a bit harsh...they shouldve asked how to spell the name of the street but im sure at the time with everything happening they probably didnt think of it or think there would be 2 different houses with basically the same address but on 2 different streets named "Wales" and "Wells"....that was way too harsh
this is something that should have been taken seriously..
my mom died of the same thing.. but the anbulance did not want to take her.. they kept saying she had anxiety and has her laying in the floor for an hour.. unfortunatly she died..
I'm in Atlanta Metro .. no this was far from her first mistake .... she was far from and exemplory either on calls or as an employee ... she has been fired.
I would also note that the director was recently fired as well.
This was an individual problem in this case but there are systemic problems in the 911 center as well... long hold times ... long dispatch times ... long response times...
Good lord. I am a 911 dispatcher, and yes she should have double verified, and if this was indeed the policy in her call center, she should be reprimanded. What you're all not considering is that maybe this was her first mistake in 10 years or that she always double verifies and didn't this time for some reason - there are quite a few reasons why this mistake was made. But 1 mistake in the possibly hundred calls she takes a day is a little ridiculous.
Are they out of their minds? The operator should never have been fired for that but would've known where the call came from if the operator learned about double checking where it happened more often.
i never said i was a 911 dispatcher. im a dispatcher for a university polce dept. we have a databas with every students id card info and when they swiped their card
Second some government will not train the people to do the job other then this is where you sit and watch me for five minutes your are on your own after that. From what I know most 911 land line will show an address it might not be correct.
wales dr and wells dr. come on people. while it is tragic, any one could have made this mistake. i want to hear the call so i can hear how she said it. b/c if she said it like the wrong st, then the call taker shouldnt be fired
Guy`s it`s not racial. The dispatcher sucked. She was lazy and didn`t understand the caller. I hate to say this but, she should have trusted the computer.
wait, who called 911? because if it was the chic, and she was having PE, there is no way she could have been understood. You can't breate when u have PE, it sounds like your tryin to talk and breathe in at the same time.....sad to see people tryin to make this out to b a race issue.....
oh im sorry i didnt know black people had an accent. you are a dumbass. im a dispatcher with acces to callers id card pictures. whenever someone calles i look at their picture. i know for a fact that many blacks sound whiter than most whites and some whites sound blacker than night. get a grip man
@MolagBal89 Well, some do have a accent, but I wouldn't call it 'ignorant' and not all of them have that same tone of voice. I know people who do sound like that and I also know people who don't. Heck, I know people who are Caucasian and some sound like that. You don't need to judge people by the way they sound.
I know its not a laughing matter.. but i had a giggle inside imagining an accent.. Wales and Wells sound similar with a southern accent. I thought 911 tracks calls though... They should get a whole new center and system.
OMG the operator should NOT have been fired. its not like she made the mistake on purpose! geez! though i think near every neighborhood, we should build like more hospitals and police depearments so people can arrive quicker.
i worked as a dispatcher it's not that easy...sometimes you don't understand the patient and when you can from a cell phone you don't get the address you are calling from that is why it is always good to call for your home phone you get your address....sometimes shit happens and you can't understand a damn thing people are saying....poor lady that died...
seriously.. he got fired cause he mistook wales for wells... that women had trouble breathing, what makes her think she could talk normally... srsly.. firing the operator was just getting someone to talk the blame
the funny thing is, she was not a low life. She had a good job, worked hard, and lived in a really good part of town. For any of you to say that is horrible. No one deserves to die like that, not even you
Then they fire her. Typical. We all know that most times it's the system of operations and not their dispatchers fault. She will be skewered to cover the upper management's ass. Like they always do. Mistakes happen. The media is showing her house on the news and everything.. for shame. This women is terrified for her life now. Some fear she may be suicidal now.
I don't want you to be mis informed people. Don't ever believe in the GPS hype that the cell phone provides advise that either you or your cell phone can be tracked...Not true in fact your cell phone signal hits towers, and th signal bounces. There are times that you may be in Atlanta and you cell phone hits a Douglasville tower or you may be in College Park and your cell hits a McDonough tower..
They do in some counties - but not all. Its called Enhanced 911. But its not available everywhere, and even where it is, it doesn't always work as planned.
Don't for a second think it was the dispatchers fault. Its not something that can be completely avoided. No one knows if they could have done better in the same situation.
She had a pulmonary embolism!!! She was going to die even if the ambulance had made it there before she called 911.

I think no matter how perfect you try to make the system,
no matter how much time goes into it,
no matter how much money you spend on it,
no matter how much planning goes into it,
no matter how many back ups you have,
it will still have flaws, mistakes will still happen, and people shouldn't lose their jobs over it.
