Hey there is nothing wrong with being a volunteer. I'm a paid firefighter and a volunteer. I'm paid in Birmingham Alabama and when i get done with my 24 on my 48 off i go home and turn on my pager and volunteer. I dont get a penny at my volunteer station. Paid are not it's the same. Medical calls and fires. Both are still putting your life on the line for people. So thanks to everyone paid are not for what you do. Stay safe PLEASE!!!! Oh and i know how it gets when you get board! I understand..

We go on calls with the paid department in our county and my dad is the volunteer chief and everyone of the paid firefighters, even the higher up officers, have complete respect for my dad.

What's with bashing vollies? I'm only a explorer but I know several vollies and full time. Vollies have the same training but just don't get paid for doing the job. My mom works with a few guys who are vollies and are on a paid dept. They do the same thing!! And go through the same training

What's the percentage of volunteer fire depts, and paid depts in the US.. Doesn't the volunteer out weigh the paid dept?.. Fire service started out as volunteer.. So let's not bas volunteers nor paid depts.. We're all here for one reason.. Saving property and lives.

Ok... I'm tired of people bashing volunteers... Volunteers are people who do acts based on their hearts and dont ask for anything in return. They get paid by knowing they helped someone.Volunteer firefighters get a small ammount of money but thats it. Some towns cant afford to pay firefighters and make them full time I guess so volunteers are all we have keeping us safe. The money sucks but they do it any ways. So they are the real firefighters. They are doing it completely because they want to.

As a guy whose done wildfire and structural firefighting, I've got to say both are tough, in their own ways. Its a physical grind working in the bush for two weeks, tough, dirty and thankless. But I never went home at the end of a day and felt sad for any of the trees. For me, thats the toughest part of firefighting. We train and prepare to save lives and property, but sometimes we cant. All those who didnt make it stay with you. Thats tough.

Sigh: This crap again. I am a vollie and protect over 17000 people within my town. We also have two factories and a junior college to protect as well. We run all day and all night, we respond to the same type of calls, and we are the only vollie dept within the suburbs of a major city. Half of the guys on our dept are union paying full time ff's, all of our officers are retired ff's. Sadly, some vollie depts give bad names for the rest of us, but don't judge a book by its cover.

We run with a tower truck, a snorkel, four Spartan engines, 2 heavy rescue squads, 4 ambulances (ALS), brush truck, and four squads. All of this is coming out of two stations, we have been vollie for over 100 years and damn proud of it. I am sure you have some brothers along side of you that started as vollies as well. Give us a break, we would love to get paid for what we do and spend even more time at the station.

when i mean two weeks, i don't mean at the station, I mean at the fire, two weeks is like nothing. Ive been at a fire for a month and a half. you would be lucky to get two hours of sleep for the first two weeks your there.

Volunteers are the best almost better then the city paid fire department. My fire department makes you go through just as much training as the city, WE DO NOT GET FIRES!! We want to change our name from fire to E.M.S only and maybe a fire (department)!!
