@fizzguts I agree it con and good one at that. This had me fool about five years ago. It fool any one who does not about energy density of air and efficiency of their engine. Looking at this their engine very inefficient because I saw vapor coming out. The air looks like it never when through a expansion stage. The problem with air is volume, a typical SCUBA tank holds 3000psi but not enough volume. @MeketoaI Yeah I know but I hate letting scammers & frauds get a free ride. I was once persuaded to tone down a review I wrote on Splitcycle engines in Aust. @aanthony44 the scamming arseholes at MDI do not want this car coming to America ! thats the hold up, if sold everyone would know it's a short range piece of crap
Is it real better than a car with an electric engine? You need electricity or something else to produce the compressed air. My question is: Is the eco-balance better than in a electric car?
"I hope it has a compressor on board. This will make the car go long distance."
Storing the 40 miles of extension cord is going to be a bitch .....Of course you could use a petrol powered compressor, which will waste 80% of the energy using the air to run the air motor. HEY I know lets use the petrol engine directly to run the car and save the energy wasted. Congratulations you've just invented the automobile
In a small-city car weighing 1100 pounds, two 100-liter (26.4-gallon) cylindrical tanks pressurized to 4350 psi provide 5 to 10 miles of city driving range.
It's a pathetic short range scam for technically illiterate investors
In a small-city car weighing 1100 pounds, two 100-liter (26.4-gallon) cylindrical tanks pressurized to 4350 psi provide 60 to 90 miles of city driving range. Refilling would take about two minutes at a compressed-air station. Plugging into a 220-volt electrical outlet at home or work, the tank fills in about four hours, while an on-board motor spins the engine as a compressor.
i heard the claim this engine could drive a car to 110kph.. but the more i think about it the more i doubt this, with no reaction in the engine the torque available is very small..im not sure how they could avoid this problem. i believe at the beginning of this video if the car didnt start by going down a ramp we would have waited 1/2 the video for it to reach the speed it was at of maybe 25kph
It might have become obvious to the powers-that-be that these upstarts were a threat to the petroleum takeover that was well under way in the transportation industry; after world war two the term "air engine" was never used in compressed air textbooks and air powered locomotives, if used at all, were usually equipped with standard, inefficient air motors.
The H. K. Porter Compound Air Locomotives, 1896-1930
Inventor Charles B. Hodges became the first and only air car inventor in history to see his invention become a lasting commercial success. His engine was two-stage and employed an interheater between the two piston stages to warm the partially expanded compressed air with the surrounding atmosphere.
The MDI company have had a working compressed air engine since 2001 and the beginning of 2002. However there is no political legislation or pledge to force the implementation of this technology over the polluting internal combustion engines.
The MDI company have been taking money for technical illiterates from the late 1990's and have NEVER created anything that comes close to their idiot claims. How much does MDI pay you to shill for them?
I don't understand the need for such a complex motor. Why use not a simple pneumatic air gun design or a heavy turbine wheel? How about a turbine at every wheel that doubles as a brake system using servos (lap and sleeve assemblies)to reverse the air flow back into the tanks? Simpler, lighter and restores air pressure during braking. (Just thinking out loud here.)
That;s what you call a road test???? Why not objectively and scientifically measure the energy and the CO2 emissions that is needed to power the car? From the power plantt to the well, including the compression and expansion cycle. Then you will find out very easy that this concept is everything but intelligent and thought through. Besides this rubbish already existed 100 years ago.
There's a beginning for everything mate. Off course this car is ugly, but I think that they want to first sell it cheap, as a car not to take ur girl to the restaurant, but to work with.
Don't worry, if people start to buy it, sexier models will come out.
Just remind the first cars produced in late 18XX ;)
@superlag What a stupid concept is, remains stupid. To store 14.3 kWh @300 bar in 300 l (90 m3 @ 1 bar) reservoirs, you need at least 93 kWh on the compressor side (with an optimum compressor working on the ideal adiabatic limit and assuming a 100% efficiency of the engine, which is not in practice). and 14 kWh is a bit more than 1 l of gasoline. So this Negre guy is either stupid or criminal
I haven't make serious calculi as urs, and I don't (really) care, but I believe you, you're probably right.
But at the end, the market (and a touch of marketing) will decide if this car have a potential, or not. Don't forget, that it's not a "bio" "ecological" car or something, just a car whit a different power engine (in fact, a deported one).
@superlag Hey, I didn;t even make any serious calculation. What I said is actually is only common sense and the basics every engineer (should) know: basics of thermodynamiics. If u don't believe me, then u also can get a scientific evaluation of the compressed air car here: Google "Creutzig "economic and environmental evaluation of compressed air cars" "
sounds like a riding lawn mower, not bad. Wish they'd move their butts and get on with it! I've never seen ANY air cars on the lots. If they work, WE WANT ONE! If not, stop pulling our chains!
The aspect ratio of the video is messed up so it looks shorter and squatter than it does in real life. Look at the wheels - they are oval shaped in this film!
In the only test published by MDI, their prototype ran out of compressed air after only 7.22km. Somehow, though, they managed to convince themselves that through a whole series of "future" improvments that this range could be increased by a factor of 25 to over 200km. Enter "mditestresults" at tinyurl to get the wayback archived page.
When does an auto magazine ever get to do a real road test?
MDI has been announcing "production next year" since 2000, but have never delivered.
I suspect that the problem has been operating range, since in the only test data ever published by MDI their prototype ran out of air in 7.22km. They then used a lot of wishful thinking to come up with projected improvements that would increase the observed 7.22km to the 200km they keep claiming ---- but never achieve!
@Charlieutube99 it is feb2011 now, AirPods producttyping is done for eurpean roads. Any idea how complicated it is to put something on the market for which no rules excist yet? This year the AirOne should be product tested to be allowed on the road and sold just before 21dec2012. Would be nice to have at least one ride in a compressed air powered car in a lifetime :-)
@180964294 MDI have been promising cars since 2000 look at how old this video is.
There have been NO independent TESTS. ie The local automobile assn takes this piece of shit to a test track and finds out just how well it goes. MDI uses designing a new "car" every year so they can keep taking money from ignorant investors. There is no product testing required just take the engine and tanks bolt them into a Smart car. Now test it. Oh dear. 5 mile range at 20 miles per hour. IT"S A CON
What is helpful to remeber, when watching this video, is that this car's motor uses one quart of VEGETABLE oil. The preheater (used over 35 MPH), can be run on 100% ethanol. This car NEVER needs ANY fossil fuels!!! OPEC can go pack sand!! This company has done a great job, considering they are NOT a multi-billion dollar company. I can't wait for the 6 passenger sedan coming in 2010, from the American company, Zero Pollution Motors. $18,000 for a Plug-in Compressed Air Hybrid, 106 MPG!
dude - they are bloody prototypes - of course they are gonna be noisy! I suspect we will see more silent running machines when they hit production.....
that's true...the prototypes in the videos don't have mufflers! That's why they are noisy The finished car will not be any louder than a gas engine car...possible less noisy...I can't believe how ill informed people are about this car when a little research online would clear up their doubts...
So technically this is a "putter around in he parking lot" test- not an actual road test. And why the take off assist from the ramp? Don't get me wrong, an air powered golf cart is an interesting idea!
MDI is a strange company. They have developed an air powered motor, and car, but they have no test track. For 15 years they have been driving prototypes around their parking lot. It will be interesting next December, when they release their intitial pilot lot of 50 cars. I hope a car magazine will REALLY test this car. The website lists the 6 cylinder car as top speed of 96 MPH, and 106 MPG, but they never list acceleration.
This Negre guy should be behind bars for disseminating the lie that air cars are ecofriendly or even zero emission as he says.
A small calculation: To store 14.3 kWh @300 bar in 300 l (90 m3 @ 1 bar) reservoirs, you need at least 93 kWh on the compressor side (with an optimum compressor working on the ideal adiabatic limit and assuming a 100% efficiency of the engine, which is not in practice). and 14 kWh is a bit more than 1 l of gasoline. So this Negre guy is either stupid or criminal.
yes the car will be available in the US as of 2010 and pre-order is in 2009...however, I think it's only the 4 door -6 passenger car is coming here. It has the same features as the 2 door
The American version uses a 6 cylinder engine. The OneFlowair shown here is a 4 cylinder. I hope the production models of both have a better muffler system!
Zero Pollution Motors for a long time said that reservations would be taken starting mid-2009 for deliveries in 2010.
Around July 2009 the zeropollution website was shut down for updates, and hasn't come back since.
At this time it does not appear that MDI/ZPM don't have any plans to introduce a car in the USA in 2010. I tried to confirm this, but e-mails to ZPM go unanswered.
It's great to see video fo an air car other than the citycat prototype .Will this car be available in the United States? I thought about buying a chevy volt till I heard about the $35,000+ Price tag.I can buy 4 Onecats for that or 2 Citycats .When will video of the Citycat2 be available? I don't mind a Onecat for under $10,000 . What's up with the holes in the doors? It comes with a convertible top right? I plan on getting on the waiting list when it becomes available!
i agree. I was tired of seeing the same silver van prototype. This car will be in France this December, with European sales in 2009. The price is 3500 Euros. More for a hard top, and 2 more seats in the back. Zero Pollution Motors in the US, will have a 4 door sedan for under $18,000, in 2010.
Ku Rin. Japan already launched a compressed air vehicle that runs 80 kms per hour. So long MDI!! Too late for your AirPod.

Too Noisy. How much money? Need to know sale prices so we can save to buy one that is SILENT. Get your freaking muffler act together.

dude - they are bloody prototypes - of course they are gonna be noisy! I suspect we will see more silent running machines when they hit production.....
madnashy 3 years ago
that's true...the prototypes in the videos don't have mufflers!

@Aircarfan: Why would you need a test track for a golf cart? If they start making actual cars ...

yes the car will be available in the US as of 2010 and pre-order is in 2009...however, I think it's only the 4 door -6 passenger car is coming here. It has the same features as the 2 door
theamacherclan 3 years ago

It's now the end of December 2008 Nada, Zip, Zero. Want to take a small wager on your 2009 and 2010 predictions?

The driver sits on the center line of the car rather than on the left or the right. Interesting.
