  • Rick and Brooke Hamilton are my brothers. Marilyn Hamilton was my sister in law. Brooke is shown at the 7:18 mark gliding off Half Dome in Yosemite. Marilyn is shown walking toward Rick at the .33 mark. Is Rick shown gliding anywhere in this video? He passed away in '97. Marilyn had her hang gliding accident in '78 at Tollhouse, and went on and continues to be a super hero in the wheel chair industry. Wow, lots of old memories...

  • It's neat to see this because I live in tollhouse and recognize every scene taken near the mountain, at the store, and the landing area. It's kind of a blast from the past to see my home from so long ago.

  • very nice!!!

  • R.I.P. "Soarin Warren" Cleeland. Per todays Fresno Bee, Warren died at the age of 84 years. After a hang gliding accident in 1997, an amputation of a leg was required.

Warren inspired many by returning to downhill skiing. He served as a mountain host, and was on the ski patrol at Sierra Summit.

Warren was also volunteer of the year at St. Agnes Hospital, helping to develop a program for amputees.

You can see Warren in the video, beginning at the 1 minute mark.

    Fly on Warren!

  • Jan 15, 2010: Please do a search for "Children of the Sky" to see the newly restored original film. Bob Riding , the original producer, now has this video on his Youtube.

The restored film is of a much better quality, and color.

    Thanks

    Frank

  • Great "In the Day" video !

Tollhouse was one of my favorite sites on my 4-5 month long road trips in '79- '80 from CO to CA and back.

I recognize several of the pilots names in the info section.

  • On sept 18th, I sent the film to be transferred to HD. I expect to get it back within a couple of weeks. I also sent some Tollhouse and Monterey footage for transfer...all shot in 1977. Thanks for your patience!

    Bob

  • Thanks Bob, I am looking forward to a copy....Roger L.

  • I have been negligent in responding to everyone's requests. Thanks to Abstractstv, I have now have 2 copies of the film, which I will attempt to re-edit with the best bits from both (Director's Cut!) I have found a lab that I trust to digitally transfer sound and image (Costco's service ruined part of the film, hence the delay)

I will let you all know my progress.

  • To those pilots flying them old wings - I salute you !

  • Not only were they flying "old wings", most of they guys didn't have a parachute!

  • I am guilty of flying without a chute too...I just hope I don't need one before I can afford to buy it.... :- I

  • Thanks man. I flew a Chandelle Standard in 1974 and a Sunbird Stratos by Gary Valle in I think 1976. This brought back memories of flying in the Northwest.

  • Frank here. I still haven't heard from Bob, who is working to get his original version out with the original audio. I know he was having problems with the original film.

Hopefully soon he will get it completed.

Thanks to everyone who has commented, and rated this great video by Bob.

  • Bob, Is the DVD out yet? I would love to purchase a copy from you or make a donation. Thanks for the film. I still fly with Larry Fleming almost weekly at Dunlap. Thanks, Patrick aka: sport2flyer

  • I've "only" been flying for 20 years. Certainly feeling like a newcomer after watching this movie.

  • The difference from launch to landing is about 2200 ft at Tollhouse!

  • This was too real for me. Talk about living vicariously, I have never been this far out. This video is as good as it gets. Thanks for uploading this one. I only took 3 or 4 breaths of air in the last ten minutes. GRADE AAA

  • Great video!

  • Thanks guys, for all your updates! Bob made one heck of a great video here. Yeah, you can tell that is Roger with his feet on the wires.

  • I agree with Jim O. that Patrick and Barbara are launching at 4:21 and 4:18 respectivly.

  • I was flying a Pliable Moose "Zipper" in this movie.

    1:08 dog is "Wings"

    3:54 Zipper in flight

    4:01 Sun III (pilot unknown)

    4:06 Larry Fleming

4:26 Michael Enns (first guy to hike a glider up Half Dome and flew off without being busted by rangers)

    5:11 Roger White

    5:35 Sandy or Ron Jones

    ...if memory serves me right.

  • Wow, just found this browsing around. I am the dude with the old white truck, Roger Lockwood, and the one being interviewed. That is Roger White with the feet in the wires. Fond memories...

  • Thanks Bob, and can't wait to see with the original soundtrack!

  • Hey, say hi to Roger White for me

    --Roger Lockwood

  • Thanks for all the positive feedback, and thanks to Frank for posting it and letting me know about it. I hadn't seen it in about 20 years! I made Children of the Sky in Super 8 in the spring of 1977, and it does have a soundtrack. I have just sent the original film off to be transferred to dvd, and will post it in about 3 weeks. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how the original soundtrack improves the film. Look for the original version in mid March '09

    Bob Riding

  • Bob-

Can you cut a copy for me?

    Thanks,

    Roger L.

  • That was beautifully made! I am an instructor for Kitty Hawk Kites and I recently found and have been flying an old Seagull in the back of our shed. I love flying it because while I didn't grow up in the glory days of hang gliding, I can feel it when I see footage like this and when I get into a seat harness and behind the control frame of that Seagull. Makes me wish I was born about 30 years sooner. Love the video! Thanks for sharing!

  • Is that the same Bob Riding from Sanger CA?

I grew up with his two boys who are now in their 20's. Also Bob Riding taught me some camera tricks as well, I'll have to ask him if he made this the next time I see him. Keep up the good work Mr. Abstractstv

  • Cool movie. 78 sounds about right. I don't recognize anyone but I never flew there. The film sure looks like it was made with a soundtrack. I would bet recovering the soundtrack would result in a vastly more interesting film.

    Ken de Russy

    Anacortes, WA

  • Hey Ken do you know Dan Harding anmd Jeff Bowman?

  • Yes I did some kayaking with both. Don't know Ding well. Jeff keeps in touch.

  • excellent, what was Marlon Brando's fee for the cameo

  • Very nice that this footage was preserved. Got to love the aesthetics of the seagull.

Thanks for the flight down memory lane!

  • Was that a mariah and/or a siracco? That would tell you, but judging by what looked like Bills phoenix super 8?, along with some 6-c's and cirrus 5,s and looks like a seahawk and a seagull 10 meter in there, i'm guessing 1978. or, perhaps i should watch it again, and note the gas prices and pay more attention to the gliders?

Did that bring back some long term memory! thanks!!!
