A wonderful big voiced Belcanto soprano, never forget her Elvira in Paris 1985. I look forward with interest to her Salome (French version) in Liège in June 2011
Strange ornaments in the repeat. I love embellishments, Mariella Devia is a master of them, but Anderson comes close. Strange she always seemed more appreciated in Europe than here, but with Damn Joan at the Met, also Caballe, who could have competed even if given the chance.
Thanks for your comments. June Anderson indeed left the USA in 1982 but she was not offered the opportunities she was excepting and must of her career was in Europe were she still is considered as THE Bel Canto singer. She triumphed in Italy and France, not easy since these countries are very, very difficult audiences. Especially Italy towards non-italian singers. She lives in Paris but she also performed quite a lot in the USA in Chicago and at the Met (Rigoletto and Lucia).
I was just looking at my original comments, I said Damn Joan- Of course you must know that I mean "Dame" I wasn't aware Anderson is still singing. She must be mid 50's by now, but look at Devia, 61 and going as well as 35 years before. Brava to both Divas. I saw Anderson many times during my career in Italy, and I always appreciated her efforts in what could be a hostile venue. I had to adopt an Italian identity to work at all- Thanks for your videos- Ernesto Vasselli
Needless to tell you I 100% agree. Circus certainly is an art in itself, but when it mixes with opera it can offer the best and the worseand when the clown is bad, everything is bad!
She is flat in the very first phrase. Why doesn't anyone but Callas do this cabelletta correct rhythmically? They rush the florid phrases, hang onto all the big notes.. and wobble worse than Callas.. God , Anderson has a huge wobble.
Lucky one! I have heard June Anderson in Norma in Chicago, Geneva and Parma... so I would love your telling me how it went in Trieste after all these years!
I'll also be in Trieste on feb. 20th!!!! As for Gruberova I saw her in Lucia (Zürich) and Capuletti (London) during her golden ages... a long time ago!

In the parts of LUCREZIA and NORMA Grubi is no match for Anderson. Grubi is more of a circus artist, Anderson is a singing actress.
