For me it's not about whether he's right or wrong, I can just easily relate to how he thinks and feels. Doubt Shinji would think he had it all worked out, or anywhere remotely close to that, though he does have some knowledge of his failings and the events that shaped him.

The English dub does indeed suck. It sucks huge hairy elephant dick. It's literally physically uncomfortable to listen to, and Asuka is outright painful.

They stated that they wanted an episode where an Angel made psychological contact with Shinji like Arael and Armisael did to Asuka and Rei.

This is that episode, and the "self that observes the self" is Leliel.

A pretty freaky sequence, but the sound effects are great.

I think that when he refers to "self that observes itself" he is refering to being overly self conscious, which would be apt when considering Shinji's avoidant traits.I could be wrong but both are fair interpretations.

Shinji is talking to his alter ego acc: Kaworu. The Shinji that exists only in his mind.

In begining Shinji's backup were missing... its like your "friends" betray you and you are all alone to do the hard work.

In the end he says, I found something I'm good at, I found something I like, is there something wrong with that? Then his mother in unit01 (the unit01 has his mother feelings and responds to them) says: What you found there? I see, you are happy. And the 01 breaks the angel apart...

When he destroyed Kaworu, its like he killed his own free will. He was that afraid that he would even kill him self in order to prevent the "third impact". Because he thinks how will he look in other peoples minds. While in his mind: Father is the enemy! And I'm going to start "third impact" my self! Against my fathers will. Just what Kaworu tried to do.

My opinion of this episode is that Shinjis self esteem went sky high due to beating Rei and Asuka on the test. He not only believed he wasnt useless but that he was better then average so tried to take on the Angel alone. When he failed hes self esteem plummted faster then post people would so he couldnt use irrational self hate as a coping mechanism to avoid reality anymore. This allowed him to introspect himself. The exact thing happened to Asuka during the "mind rape" scene.

I saw whole show once again.

This is not important scene at all but here is my view.

Shinji inside Leliel talks to him self and what makes him different is that he cares what people think about him, his image in eyes of others.

Ironically all characters want something but they are unable to do it, because they are sick.

Now Shinji wants to be happy alone with his battle against the Angel, but he can't escape feeling alone and that sickness is killing him.

Unlike him Rei can live alone?

Shinji represents japanese god Susanoo-lightning, Destrudo and Avoidant Cluster C

Asuka is Ame-no-Uzume

Rei is Amaterasu-sun

Kaworu is Tsukuyomi-moon

Tsukuyomi and Susanoo are brothers and Amaterasu is their sister. Amaterasu came from left eye, Tsukuyomi from right and Susanoo from nose. As seen in episode 24 Rei is left Shinji in middle and Kaworu right when testing sync ratio.

It's kind've complicated, but the Angel is really only observing. It watches his thought processes in order to understand him, but Shinji is talking to himself. As Shinji's other voices says, "The human mind is made up of two selves." "Two?" "Yes. The Shinji Ikari that exists in Shinji's mind, and the Shinji that exists in the minds of others."
