i grew up around this engine it used to belong to the hocking vally scenic railway in nelsonville ohio for over 10 years it set in a engine house waiting to be restored but never was until it was traded to the ohio central railway for a gp10 no 701 but man i never thought i would get to see it under its own steam again
@jcxstargazer I went to college down at Hocking in the early/mid 80s and would watch this engine run on the weekends down there. I think its sad they didnt restore it and keep it. Its not the same with the diesel they use now.
That too, but unfortunately they were bought-out by the Genesee & Wyoming, and all equipment (except for the steamers) will wear the G&W black and orange scheme; so painting a steamer for the "Ohio Central" would probably be pretty pointless.
They weren't included in the deal, so they're safe. Also, it appears that the expected name-transfer never happened, so the Ohio Central is still the Ohio Central, just under G&W management; that's what I get for trusting Trainorders. :P
Yup, once it's done it would be amazing if she could go triplehead with 765 and 1225. Something like that would put the 1991 NRHS convention to shame. ;)
Meh, the former executives of NS are the ones I really blame, especially for the murder of the 1218. I don't think CSX will ever wake up, and even if they did, judging by the way they run a railroad....yikes. :P
Well i blame the new management too because they would let 611, and 1218 sit and not run anyway, and what do you mean by CSX running a railroad? have they been in predicaments lately?
Not really, it's just that CSX is generally a little behind when it comes to maintenance, but really it's that their management sucks. I like them as a railroad, but the people at headquarters are basically indifferent to any issues that arise. My local line, the Georgia Northeastern, is having trouble because CSX refuses to handle trains from the GN that are under 50 cars; even if there are 49, they still won't take it (which has happened).
And they were the last places for steam to run free, but I've had a thing for short lines because they had a different way of delivering frieght you know?
Yeah, I can spot you there, shortlines have a real "personal" feel to them, and are usually pretty close-knit operations, where time isn't the all-encompassing factor like it is on class 1's; They care more about doing it right than doing it fast.
Oh, by "my" I just meant that it was the line that I'm most familiar with, not that I work for them. I'd love to work for a shortline though, especially the GN, or the Nashville & Eastern; But I'm 16, so I have to wait for two more years before I can apply to work for any railroad, anyway.
Ha, yeah, I know what you mean, it's kind of BS, but then again education is generally a priority when it comes to getting a job, so I look at it that way.
You got a point there, but I'm flunking at school because the teachers won't cut me some slack, but one day, I'll be working for a railroad (most likely a shortline)
I think school is kind of getting that way for everyone at this point; no one really wants to do any work because we're all tired, but we have to if we want to pass, so life generally sucks right about now. ( I'm actually writing a six-page research paper for lit. right now, and it's due tomorrow). :P
Yeah, it'll take me a few hours, but I procrastinate like no other, so to a degree I guess it's my fault. Then again, my lit teacher is hot, so it's all good. :P
Same, and it's something that's kind of hard to do, since I love railroading, but have to more or less keep it under wraps, since no one understands trains anymore, and consequently they won't understand you. I like to sketch though, and a lot of people like the ones of trains, in addition to the Larson-esque cartoon strip I do off to the side.
Trust me, you might as well keep it under wraps, because when i was splurting my love for trains out, i was constantly made fun of at school until i picked up guitar, and it died down a little bit.
That's why only a few of my friends know about it, and they basically know to keep quiet about it. But since trains are only an occasional subject, no one really makes the connection. And yeah, I really know what you mean about "splurting" the love for it, I did that too and it screwed me in 7th grade, but by 8th grade I had reversed it a little, and by freshman year no one really seemed to remember or care. I'm a junior now and it's basically like it never happened.
Yeah, I'm already there :) and i try guitar, i suck at that, i try bass guitar, i suck just as bad, the only thing i am good at is model trains, learning about trains etc, so, I'm screwed, because my band is probably thinking about kicking me out, so i made it official, trains are for me you know?
Haha, yeah, I got you. Just find something else to do off to the side, I guess; I'm a huge fan of the outdoors and offroading, so that's kind of my thing besides trains.
Well, i like vintage and new cars and trucks, and i like to farm, and play video games, so i guess you're right :) and i like to go 4-wheeling, and go-karting!
Yeah, i hate that stereotype for railfans, but i do have other hobbies too, but have you been to Kentucky Railroad Museum? I'm going to ride 152 this summer :)
Yup! I have family in Louisville so I'm up there almost every fall. The last time I was there 152 wasn't running, but the conductor that day was awesome and showed me around the yard when the train pulled back into New Haven. :) And dude, you have no idea how lucky you are, 152 is one of my favorite steamers, she's just so damn beautiful, and from an amazing railroad.
Yeah, everybody over here is whining about 2716 getting restored, and all that, my advice? enjoy 152 while they are deciding 2716's fate! besides 152 has better value as a locomotive, i mean it's the official locomotive of Kentucky! how can you compete that?! even 4501 has a title as "the green mikado" but that could only come close to 152! :D
Yup, though I do love the 4501, and I can't wait for her to run again. But true that, the 630 is the one I've really been anticipating at the TVRM, and hopefully I can go see her this summer. I was really hoping that GSMR 722 and 1702 would see the light of day too, but, as of now, they seem to be screwed. :(
Due to the economy, the GSMR abandoned its steam operations, and fired the entire steam shop crew (about 40 people) in Dilsboro, and after that the line from Dilsboro to Bryson City was basically abandoned. The 722 and 1702 are still sitting disassembled in storage, which is not helping their situation at all.
I'm not sure; the line will see occasional special runs, but essentially it will no longer be used. The line from Bryson City to Andrews is still open, though.
Yup, they both were, though the 1702 was considerably ahead of the 722. The 722 was in for a full overhaul, while the 1702 was in primarily for firebox and running gear work.
Yeah, it would be amazing if there could be an agreement where the TVRM could restore them, then lease them out to the GSMR (I want what is best for the steamers, but I don't want the GSMR to be screwed out of anything).
Definately know what you mean on that, and that's tough....610 is definately one of my favorites, but it would be hard to call it my absolute favorite....my favorites would have to be LS&I 33, K&HR 203, the 610, the1702, 722, and the 604 at the NCTM. Georgetown loop #40 and D&RGW 315 would have to be my favorite narrow-gauge consolidations.
Right now, I think the NCTM's main priority is to get things ready for the re-design and construction of a new transportation hall; unfortuantely, 604 is on the back-burner right now. But it's not all bad, they do have GC 1925.
Sorry, again, my bad. It's an FRA regulation that mandates the inspection of steam locomotives every 31, and subsequently 92 days of service. However, 1925 is curently laid-up for 1472, which is the allowed amount of days (about 15 years) for a boiler to remain in operational service, so she's getting new flues and firebox work, and I believe that they're also be putting on new tires.
Yeah, but 604 is supposed to be restored before her, so it will probably be more like 8-10. But as long as she is in the roundhouse and in good hands, I'm happy.
Exactly! :) There is still steam out there, we have to see and appreciate it while we can. As long as the carbon tax doesn't get passed, steam should have a good run.
The OC steam program was not included in the deal. The previous owner of the OC still owns the eqiupment. Word has it that he also still owns the Alco's too. There is something in the works for the future for the program as I have heard enough talk, just not sure as of yet myself.

why don't they put the OCRR logo on it?

OHCR because they are trying to keep the engines original so that means paint tooo.
