2012 is a reference to the end of the earth because the Mayan calander ends in that year. Actually 12-02-12. Why we don't know. Many books and theorys abound. 2012 is an upcomming movie and not related to "I am legend"

The date is 12/21/2012. That day the Mayan Calendar ends because it finishes a cycle of 13-Baktuns. Technically, the next day a new cycle will begin. Similar to what we know as New Year's Eve and then New Years Day.
