I was gonna chase this storm, but I go to high school and I'm a freshman, so I had to settle on watching it on live TV. Crazy seeing the tower view of the tornado sucking the water out of the Connecticut River. The storm went 30 miles to my north. Oh well.
I lived in MA my whole life and in 2010 I moved to MN where tornados happen all the time. Since I have lived in MN I haven't seen a tornado, but now MA is getting them!? Crazy!
I was in the area a few days later and saw the devastation while driving on 84 and 91. Massive devastation. You guys are lucky the winds changed as it crossed the highway.
make a run for it where? They where on 91 North, 50 feet above the ground. Unless they wanted to jump down onto Columbus Ave down below, I doubt they would have ran far. Also no ditches to hide in 50 feet high on a elevated highway

okay so I finally figured this out. these guys were traveling directly west and the tornado was going directly north and then curved going directly east (which you can see as it travels past that guys right shoulder). if you were to chart it out on a map it would look like the tornado traveled in a zig zag path. very interesting.
@chattychar They were on RT 91 North, but kinda traveling northwest (no highway in New England is straight) but the tornado was on a east / southeast heading. They mapped out the path on tv and it did travel east while zig-zagging north to south. But like ya said, very interesting stuff.
That is classic response to something like a tornado - I don't think these guys were trying to mock anyone. They were in awe!! My prayers are with everyone affected.

I cant believ this happened in Springfield ,Mass. about 2 days before the Tornados destroyed Joplin I had nightmares of a Tornado all Night I never had Dreams of Tornados I woke up and told my girl I couldn't sleep that I was dreaming all night that I was running from Tornados and we both asaid they don't happen around our parts of Massachusetts and the Joplin hit I was freaked out a little because it hit the next day and now this happened I am completely freaked out , I hope everyone is alright

Obviously these guys weren't trying to jest or mock the victims - they merely filmed & commented. How is that wrong? In times of disaster we can benefit from a laugh. I very much feel for ALL tornado victims, have made the largest donation I can afford to the red cross, w/out being unable to pay rent, have family who lost their home coming to stay with me indefinitely, & yet I still think it perfectly fine to enjoy a comedic reprieve. @jackiepoo87 no, tornadoes occur in every continent. Just because MA isn't in the Tornado Alley it doesn't mean tornadoes don't happen there. It's rare, but it happens. There are tornadoes as far up as Canada. Just because something doesn't occur on a regular basis, it doesn't mean it can't occur ever. And when it does, it doesn't mean the world is going to end. We live in a dangerous planet. Things like these are bound to happen.

On our way back, we ran into rain, snow, wind, heat, and pingpong ball size hail all within hour! it was like the twilight zone! turn on the tv the other day and there are tornadoes in Yuba and Chico. those areas are pretty rural, but i'm wondering how long until it decides to cross a I-5 with traffic. I'd stick to the Pacific Coast Hwy.

After I heard enough of the exchange, I stopped the video so I could write my comment without back-noise (habit), which was posted before I got the full context. Oops!

um. the worst thing you could do is drive right into the storm. the best is to 1. get to a basement. they can't. 2. turn around (which it doesn't look like they can do. 3. get in a ditch. 4. hold on to the dashboard and pray. 5. if you were on an open highway and you were a trained storm chaser you might be able to travel on the west side of the tornado and follow it , but these guys look like they are directly east. just a BAD situation to be in.

holy mary mother of god. i would have peed my pants if i were you guys. heard what happened to those on the bridge right? my parents just landed in Mass. yesterday for their vacation. they were going to drive down to sturbridge. instead they chose to drive to maine. so lucky they didn't drive down. and they had no idea!! i called them and they were shocked because they heard no warnings or anything. the only warnings are A. from listening to the weather channel. B. seeing tornado in your face.

1. My whole comment was based upon the first minute of the video, which is a cropped, narrow view that doesn't reveal the wider context. After I heard enough of the exchange, I stopped the video so I could write my comment without back-noise (habit), which was posted before I got the full context. Oops!
2. Unfortunately, my criticisms are seldom impeccable, I considered deleting it, to save face, but the fact is nothing I saw changes my general outlook about trusting others behind the wheel.

um. the worst thing you could do is drive right into the storm. the best is to 1. get to a basement. they can't. 2. turn around (which it doesn't look like they can do. 3. get in a ditch. 4. hold on to the dashboard and pray. 5. if you were on an open highway and you were a trained storm chaser you might be able to travel on the west side of the tornado and follow it , but these guys look like they are directly east. just a BAD situation to be in.

@chattychar as I said in my non-retraction retraction, I based this on the first minute, after which I stopped it and wrote my ill-suited comment. My comment about hitting the gas was not to drive into it but to get away from it, in a different direction. I didn't realize they were pinned in until after I posted and resumed watching. Not my shining moment on youtube. In any case, everything you said makes perfect sense to me. Thanks.
