We were using container data centers in the 90s in the military, we could pickup the dc and have it across the world in 2 weeks. We used the TAVB as the ship of choice to deploy.
@saknk1 because this way it is easier to get transported on large container-carrying trucks from their source, with no need to assemble\connect anything but electricity and ethernet.
If everyone on the planet can upload unlimited videos on youtube for free, and everyday the disk space used is growing exponentially, for how many years do you think you can go with this process?
Because you are turning Youtube like a regular TV (with forced ads) and people HATE ads, I believe the advertising program will not cover your investments anymore, one day or another this system will crash.
@AnasTangi it's not just the ads, it's how you see the ads. google has a thing called ad sense and it tracks your searches and preferences and then uses that info to give you the best add
this is something tv cant do and advertisers pay allot for it
@AnasTangi You make a good point, but this is technology we are talking about, google moore's law. As time goes by new technologies are invented which make storage, computing and technology less expensive. So in effect, Google is banking their business that. Ten years back, 1GB was a lot of storage space. Now you can purchase a PC with 2000GB for half the amount of money. It is not heading for failure, the costs are reducing and google is very efficient.
@megadoudatron it's a publicly owned company with millions of investors... the investors pay for the equipment the ads payback the investors. learn to play dude.
@karrotop Reason one : packaging and handling costs are much less. Shipping container method : build 1000 servers, install in shipping container, test the system, ship the container. Rack method : build 1000 servers, pack in 1000 boxes, load 1000 boxes into shipping container, ship container, remove and unpack 1000 boxes, fit to racks and test. Reason two, cooling system - don't have to cool the whole building. Reason three, more resistant to fire, flood, earthquake etc.
Interesting video Google I myself have 2 servers running a private network in my house for family basically it's 2 servers that are running a login client (Novel) not sure if you heard of it probably have but that's what I'm using. Nice work btw guys keep it up.
@xGetSmartx consolidate into virtual! Much better, and cheaper to run. Personally I don't like Novell (not novel) but to each his own. Plus running a domain at home really doesn't have much benefit unless you break the 10 node mark.
So here's my question...do you think there are over a million viewers interested in data centers? or is it because it's google? I'm hoping for the interest in data centers because then my youtube video on my data center comics will stand a chance :)
@tomaspruzina i dont think you understand my question you seem to be talking about activists and not what this data center is. perhaps you're being sarcastic
@Armornone at least one would be that the packaging and handling costs are much less.
@Armornone I work with a lot of datacenters and the idea of open data centers is a dying idea since you have to cool a much larger space instead of just the devices. This in turn requires more cooling power. Also if you have ever been in a large datacenter you would know that there are always areas were heat builds up and cool air lingers. Every large datacenter with the open floor plan runs into this problem.
@deadbolt9019 You need some large ventilation fans on the ceiling to pull out the hot air. I don't think the shipping container idea will catch on. Majority of data centers do not do this and they seem to be doing just fine.
@Armornone Imagine trying to cool that entire warehouse compared to individual containers, also isolation is also beneficial in terms of fire safety, I'm sure they would rather lose 1 container due to a fire outbreak as opposed to the entire data warehouse.
one clip of a cable and there goes a chunk of youtube... "what do you mean this account no longer exists? i just make it yesterday! wtf?!" now that would suck!
@TheYaXeL I don't think you can do that with water-cooling. The people who took a processor to 6.5 GHz had to use liquid nitrogen to cool it. To go upto 50 GHz, I guess even Liquid Helium won't be enough.
Stupid long hair Hippie. How dare you not buy expensive HP servers from CDW. You are stealing from them by not giving CDW million of dollars. Freaking computer pirates. If you want to play, you must play. You are cheating the system by getting this computing HP without paying the proper people. No one will take you seriously if you don't have the most expensive brand name equipment purchased from CDW!!!! Damn you all
These containers remind me of the mobile ADP container vans that housed the UNIVAC 1500 data-processing systems I used to maintain in the Marines back in the 70's. We could tear down and redeploy the entire system via airlift to anywhere in the world within three days.
