These guys can play their instruments but they have no idea how to write a fucking song. They just kinda dick around for 4 and a half minutes. Even if they're doing time signature changes they have no ability to make it flow from one beat to the next. All of the changes are fast, and clean, and done precisely, and they can play technical riffs here and there but it just doesn't flow as a complete song and I find myself getting bored really quickly. I honestly tried to give these guys a chance.

While I can't get into it it could easily be my preconceptions about the genre that sour it for me as I have a long history of hardcore 'metal elitism'. I've been trying to get back into this genre and find the good representations of it that are the ones that aren't deserving of the shitty rep it gets in metal. These guys CAN play, maybe I just need to warm up to their songwriting a bit. We'll see how time trats this one.

That doesn't mean there are not bands that break the mold in their respective genres (i.e. All Shall Perish, Rings of Saturn, Into Eternity, Iced Earth, Protest the Hero, Annotations of an Autopsy, Aristeia, Conducting from the Grave, Daath and many more) It's difficult to distinguish yourself from other bands within the same genre, as is being creative.
