  • Putnam was the model for the character of "Ted Baxter" in Mary Tyler Moore.

  • Before there was a Rush Limbaugh, there was George Putnam. Mr. Putnam laid the ground work for the new forum known as talk radio. And he did it with dignity and verve that few, if any, can claim today. I was incredibly lucky to sit in on his shows at the Arco Towers and saw a parade of guests including Lucille Ball. Indeed no one could wax Hollywood better than George. While I didnt always agree with him politically, he was fair to all and was first class all the way. God speed, George.

  • George Putnam!

I moved away from Los Angeles at age 14, watched you on the local news.

Thank You for your voice & patriotism.

  • Thanks for posting. George Putnam was a master behind the mic. Besides that booming captivating voice, the content of his message put him in a league of his own. There will never be another George. His love for our great nation knew no bounds. Rest in peace my friend.

  • Independence Day 1996 !!! :)

  • All I can say is GOD BLESS

  • @odessa90068 Me too :)

  • Great piece of broadcast history re-visited. 5 stars!

  • He was a big guy, straight and tall, even into his late 80's. I had a chance to meet him when I was hired to produce some radio at KIEV in Glendale. He had that booming voice, and he looked like a linebacker. He was still driving and he tooled around in a Rolls Royce, Silver Cloud if memory serves.

  • barbara graham was a hottie..

  • It's certainly true that we will indeed never see his like again in broadcasting. A true legend who not only reported the news, but actually knew what he was talking about.

  • I had no idea he died!

  • Wow! I'm just astounded that I just found out he died last year. I grew up in L.A. watching george daily and also hearing his radio show. I still remember all his sponsors "Stubes Dairy" and "Arnola Copper piping". All the old icons of my youth are passing away. I'll mis him. He was a classy guy and a proud patriot.

  • He is so missed. A great pioneer and a great, decent broadcaster. I grew up watching him every night in the 60's. His kind is now lost. RIP George, you were the best.

  • I remember watching George Putnam as a kid growing up in Southern California. He was a kind, conservative gentlemen of high class and morals. He was a credit to the news industry of his day.
