This was Coe's 1st race in a month, since injured racing & beating Cram narrowly on June 21st over 800. He was unable to train for 3 weeks, a vital time for speed work & went into the Dream Mile the following week having not run any inter. meets over the longer distance. Cram had already run a 3:31 & a 3:29 WR! Perhaps if the Oslo Mile had been slow (outside 3:52) Coe may have been able to rely on his basic speed, but he just wasn't in the shape to compete with Cram at the height of his powers.
