  • i always love visiting his favorite place in L.A.

  • fucking brilliant . :')

  • I feel like I'm in heaven when I listen to his songs.

  • the outro and the lyrics are incredible

  • The chord progression reminds me of Neil Young's "Tell Me Why". But anyway, it was just fair to adore Neil in the 90's, just like I adore Elliott right now (and Neil too).

  • love this song

  • never realized it but the melody and name is reference to chet baker's let's get lost right?

  • This song reminds me of summer 2006 swimming through cases Tilburg's Dutch Brown Ale, surfing myspace. Very clean apartment except for the semi-circle against the wall where I Jack Kerouaced my way through tons of new songs(including by ES), new people, and old memories. I lived quite happily in cyberland for 6 months. It was my beautiful place to get lost. Then myspace died, and hell, it was time to move on anyway. To find some other place to get lost.

  • I miss Elliott

  • I just feel the same feeling about destroying relationships i build with other people, or burning every bridge i cross. Finally, i always feel alone. Thought it was a way to feel free... i guess free people don't feel that lost?

  • im looking for the "faster" version of this song and i cant find it anywhere -.- it wasnt a cover , it was by elliott smith , does anyone know?

  • hero's do kill them selves sometimes i would'nt say he was a coward, talking shit about someone that is not here to defend themselves is being a coward, and you don't know for sure he killed himself, and so what if he did, it was his choice or anyones choice that does it, this is a fucked up place to live, and sometimes just sometimes something beautiful like elliott comes along to make it worth it

  • I love elliott a ton but heroes don't kill themselves.

  • @MegaMandrake99 Should be suicide a coward act? Who said he was a hero? Each person is a world and we will never be able to understand his reasons, we just can appreciate what he did, and that's a lot.

  • @andrewizz I was referring to the end of this video where it says hero.

  • This song is the embodiment of the yearning for freedom.

  • @ImaginedWriter I don't think it's a song about freedom, it's rather a song about loneliness

  • @MrCabycaby "I'll burn every bridge that I've got and find some beautiful place to et lost".

He just wants to escape his life, it's not about loneliness in my opinion.

  • @ImaginedWriter "I had true love and made it die, I pushed her away, she said please stay" i think it's about his inability to build relationship with other people. He sure wants to escape his life because he doesn't feel at ease with other people. He think no one can understand him and he consciously sinks into loneliness (burning every bridge that I cross). That's a sad song as Elliott had a sad soul. Pardon my english

  • RIP Elliot. He's finally found a beautiful place...

  • @looooooooooooongname your comment made me cry. D: i miss elliott so much. </3

  • elliott smith is a friendly ghost

  • He heals me.

  • Goosebumps...

  • I wish I could get lost with Elliott Smith, i don't think i would even classify it as "getting lost" i would call it amazing.

  • Just listen and enjoy the music.Play along if you have instrument.Don't ever insult beauty with overanalysis. It only takes away.

  • i like the happy self depricating tone

  • his music reminds me of nick drakes if nick drake lived to be older

  • Whenever I'm in a terrible mood and I go for a walk, I listen to this song. I love Elliott Smith, very much. I wish he hadn't died. <3

  • Sad songs are a gift

  • this song means a lot for me :) i just love it !!!

  • qweahs

  • life is life love is love and YOU OWN it all

  • There's an interesting thing to be learned from the intro to this song.... elliott smith took direct influence from jimi hendrix. The 6 string 9sus2 figure in the intro shows it. You'd never think it without that, but I guess it's no surprise.

  • @avancouw

That's interesting, thank for pointing that out

  • @avancouw me correcting myself.... the opening isn't an Esus2, it's an E11. And, after learning some of this music it's clear that Dylan was a huge influence on ?Smith. Hendrix probably has little role if any.

  • @aaronvan15 dylan influence by: melody buried in rhythm with hammers and pulls. The way he does this is very like dylan, but he expands on it by mixing a bass line + rhythm + melody all in a solo guitar piece. It's genius and very difficult to imitate. fingerpicking while alternate - bass strumming. Whew, amazing.

  • what's up man, do you have any info on the fig 8 painting seen at 2:15? my sister painted me literally that exact same painting, (everything down to the detail of that picture). i'm pretty sure that it's mine haha. where did you get that picture?

  • awesome pics to go with the awsome song!

  • I had true love I made it die. Now that's a lyric lol.

  • @prinznevsky What's your point? Just die...make room for better people

  • @warcraft4elite um, my point is that the incredible amount of hero worship for this guy is ridiculous. he had some good songs yes, but sheesh, get over it. he's like the bob marley of hipsters, he can do no wrong, but he was a dumbass junkie punk rock waster, and he would be more valuable if he had stuck around to write and develop as an artist, and not be a poster boy for a ridiculous lifestyle. I believe more people like him for this than his music, its a bit of a knife edge innit?

  • @prinznevsky There are people who are hero worshipers to this guy, true. But the majority of his fans love him for his music, and the songs that he did write. The people who just love him because of his story are just looking to be apart of something. I happen to love him and his music because he got some good friends of mine through an incredibly tough period of time. His music has the power to do it. I hardly ever think about his death, though. Sometimes I forget. But most don't worship him.

  • @Amulius thanks for being reasonable. I'm just sick of this guy. I heard him 13 years ago (16 counting Heatmiser) and I was just not that moved. The problem is that he "signifies" an ideal of a movement. his music is not bad, yes, but the whole thing is about the "indie exclusivist" ideal. since Kurdt was coopted, ES was the last of the tragic figures that was "personal"; it was rarified "culture" not to be "accepted" by the masses. that shit is wrong; at least KC wanted to spread the word...

  • I love Elliott for his music, you sound like a humongous arrogant douche

  • @prinznevsky Kurt killed himself because he hated himself so much and couldn't control his behavior. Elliott killed himseld because of people like you. He had a strong disdain for people who were violent, stupid, and pretended they were good people. This song is specifically about escaping everyone. So go fuck yourself and don't come back you fucking asshole

  • @prinznevsky your the reason he killed himself, prick,

  • @prinznevsky I seriously don't understand people like you. You're the kind of person that goes to a certain artist's song and criticize when you're just wasting your time. If you really hate elliott smith then don't come and post something so respectful to someone who has passed away, yes I understand your comparison from kurt's suicide to elliott's but you're to stupid to realize that a suicide is committed by someone going through emotional distress. Each had reasons for suicide

  • This song reminds me of Neil Young. I get the feeling that Elliott Smith was influenced by him, not sure though. It's amazing, for sure. Why is it that some of the most talented and beauty invoking individuals struggle with depression?

  • i think i'd be more depressed if i were a stupid hater with nothing to do than watch videos i don't like.

my respects to a very talented man, not you of course haha.

  • dammit, I miss you so much :(

  • Beautiful song

  • 1:42 is my fave, cause I see the dedication. <3 Miss you Elliott.

  • I wish I could have been Elliott Smith's friend. Of course I never met him, but somehow I like him better than alot of the people I do know in real life

  • I agree. A lot.

  • That's good ;)

  • I second that, ma mann.

  • Yeah. If life is a battle, than Elliott was a soldier who didn't fit in. His life was a constant struggle with depression and drug addiction. He couldn't make it, but he left us with some of the most beautiful music ever. Maybe he made his songs hoping they would help people to keep moving forward, when he knew that he couldn't. R.I.P is all there is to say :(

  • @breeeegs

Man i totally agree. Most people just don't think about things and elliott obviously had a way for words through his thoughts. I would have loved to be his friend

  • Rest in peace sweet angel

  • rest in peace, elliott smith.

  • Hope I see you somewhere down the line, Elliott.

  • i.hope.that.some beautiful place to get lost.exists.

  • not 2009, 1999~

  • I've been crying watching it. I totally agree with KonnieHoover, have the same feelings. Elliott, you're still alive.

  • LOL -- the picture at :25

  • Are you feeling horny for 2009?

  • this is so pretty, amazing...what a shame

    Mark u.k

  • i live in portland and i take the bus almost everyday, and whenever i do i usually turn on his music. he was an amazing, and beautiful song writer, and inspiration to many many people. im getting choked up just writing about it. .....more of what i have to say in the next box....

  • portland weather makes me think of him, and i can safely say that he is one of my most favorite singer song writers i have every heard, and i dont take that label lightly...he makes me feel every emotion. he reminds me of happy times in my life, jealous times in my life, horrible, sad, beautiful, gross, dissapointing, inspiring, and sexy times of my life. i wish i had been able to go to a show of his... i would honestly give a limb to have seen him play live in a portland house show.

  • I know just what you mean.

  • well said. I want to visit Portland.

  • @KonnieHoover i got to see him live at the crystal ballroom when i was about 12, wasnt old enough to really appreciate it at the time, but so glad i did now in retrospect

  • @KonnieHoover i used to live in portland, which is where i discovered his music. as i walked the grey dreary streets, i frequently wondered if the portland i was looking at was the same portland he was looking at. know what i'm saying...

  • Burning every bridge that I cross...to find some beautiful place to get lost

One of the best songs ever, thanks for sharing

  • the first time a read these lyrics was amazing. i couldn't not believe how clever he was. i still can't really. always finding new stuff buried in his music!

  • You totally should... Portland is amazing. i cant think of anywhere else i would want to be in the united states. i've lived here quite some time. My usual youtube name is eirojrambackwards by the way. who turned you on to elliott smith?

  • this girl i used to date was a big fan. she really knew her music. i think i flew into portland to play at oregon st. but i want to go just for fun.

  • how did u get into Elliott Smith?

  • A while back in middle school my old best friends Maria showed me his stuff. I've been super stuck ever since :)

  • RIP

he keeps my head up when everything else is down. my inspiration :(

  • I don't know what to do and what I wanna do.

I'm too sick and tired of everything.

    Let's get lost.

  • His best Album is ' New Moon'

  • that's a compilation of his best songs, though, so I don't think that's fair to say. lol

  • it's not

it's just songs that havent being realesed

  • elliotts feeling horny in 1999?

  • yeah what the hell was that?

  • Basement on the Hill is a sublime album, despite the fact many of the songs were unfinished (see the wiki for this album). And this is the most beautiful song. The chords at the end just send me everytime.

  • does anyone notice how elliot smith manages to make what he's playing sound like he's strumming and picking at the same time? like two hands are playing? how the fuck does he do that

  • I guess it just comes with being one of the greatest musicians ever.

  • mute your strings as you favor one finger, pluck the strings, overdub. I love the song, don't get me wrong, its just basic guitar technique.

  • he actually plays most of his songs all at once.. he doesn't just double track the melodies over the chords. he has a unique brand of finger-style that revolves around playing bass lines with the thumb and picking out melodies while keeping a steady strumming rhythm. So yes, DaveVazquez, he very often does pick and strum at once lol. a bit more than some "basic guitar technique"...

  • one of the greatest guitar players and horribly underated.you're right firefire1,

  • :) they are beautiful pictures..to go with an amazing so and most talented musician..thankyou x

  • I hate it when talented people die like that...but I love this song...and the pictures are beautiful,.

  • absolutely beautiful song and seeing the pictures with it just makes me sad that he's gone.

  • yessss

  • This song reminds me everytime that im sad and i wich i could fly away somewhere else, this is beautiful nice work

  • this song is so beautiful!!

  • omg the first pic :{

  • oh man, thank u. *________*
