Thanks for this...how great to be able to remove the orchestra in the old recording with this one. Especially since voice and orchestra were recorded together in 1913. Nice work!
Caruso changed how the modern tenor ... still sings. He broke with the bel canto tradition of just a portraining a beautiful voice. He didn't intend to change the bel canto tradition, but he could not help sing his heart.
ALL later tenors have learned from the empathy of this giant. THIS is the golden voice of the (past) century and maybe centuries to come.
No wonder he was the first recording star ever - his singing goes straight to the heart of people.
Amongst the twenty or so truly great 20th century tenors, three stand out amongst the galaxy of talent as 'super greats'. They are Gigli, Bjorling (a non-Italian) and Caruso. This recording comfirms Cauro's utter brillance.
This is what Caruso did: he set the standards by which this and so many other arias were sung; he set the ideal by which all others were compared. Many sang before and after him but almost alone he did the impossible and said "follow me." This is difficult if not impossible to gainsay.
