If you ever get a chance, get the special edition of gremlins with the cast/crew commentary. They said the film almost got an R rating because of the microwave scene, but instead it retained it's PG rating after much back-and-forthing with the studio and the MPAA (the PG-13 rating didn't come out until the following year).

I miss the use of puppets. CGI just doesn't usually have that "I could reach out and touch it" presence that a creature requires to be convincing.

Then one day as a teenager I was flipping through channels while I was home alone and Gremlins was on, I turned the channel and then realized that I was way too old to be afraid of something like that so I turned the channel back to the Gremlins movie and I watched it. To my surprise I found it quite amusing!!!

according to what i read, originally the mother was suppose to get killed by the gremlins. as Billy comes home her head would be thrown downs the stairs. and Gizmo was originally going to be Stripe. but Spielberg overruled. i think Spielberg wanted the microwave seen gone, but Dante kept it regardless...glad he did!! classic scene
