  • First gen Miata might be at the top of your price bracket, or slightly out of it. I don't know if Europe has any reservations about the Miata's appearance, but even if they do, people will respect you at the track. They're great and extremely cheap track cars.

  • MedicalSage is right. All these modifications for a first trackday are fine if its a new RACER. A regular joe that wants to drive fast on the track just needs a helmet, mechanically sound car and safety gear. A stock car with good performance tires are all you need...

  • Just buy a helmet and head out there for a weekend. Once you get started, you'll have no problem figuring out what to do.

  • As much as Garage 419 gives good advice, this episode is frankly rubbish. I was out there that day when Garage 419 was filming. Don't bother with tires, suspension, engine, etc. You'll need the money to maintain your car and pay for track days. One simply needs a mechanically sound car and accompanying safety gear. $2000coilovers may buy you a second, but one more hour of seat time can yield 10 seconds. Upgrading your car does nothing if you don't have the skill to keep up with it.

  • @MedicalSage I guess it depends what sort of car you have... If you are trying to track a family car then your tyres + brakes are gonna just melt. However most performance cars come with decent brakes anyway so yeah... why spend money upgrading??

  • We assumed people would be smart enough to figure that part out. This episode was about getting OUT on the racetrack for the first time, not going to sit and watching a track day for the first time.

  • Sitting there does not mean sitting and watching. Sitting and LEARNING while driving. Going 100% on a track your first day is a pretty easy way to a new car because you crashed your last one.

  • You know what stinks, all these 1st time track videos they talk about chucking money all over the place. Even track days are too expensive these days. All my older friends safety they feel bad for young guys today because racing has become unaffordable for those that what a one day track experience with their daily driver. I do not have $300 for a track day...what happened to the $25-$50 track days??????

  • I've never seen a $30 track day..ever, anywhere.

    From the promoter's perspective, track rentals ALONE can easily cost $5,000 a day. Add insurance and staff, and you're even higher. Divided by 100 cars, do the math and multiply by the number of days.

  • My friend said like 10 years ago, you paid $50 at some tracks and they let you fun a few laps.

    That is what I want, not a whole day not some prep, I just want to occasionally do a few laps. Not a whole day. Its like I am forced to drive stupid on the road. I cant afford a track.

  • Your "friend said"? Then it must be true, right? WRONG. Been doing this since 1984, never seen a $10 track day.

    Unfortunately, racing isn't cheap. If you can't afford your hobby, it's very difficult to find a work-around.

  • I wrote $50 not $10...and I didnt say track day..I said to just go a few laps. Do you know how to read?

  • $10, $50, makes no difference. Maybe in 1972, not today. The cheapest I've ever seen a track day was $75 back in the 1980's, but because of track rental costs, insurance, overhead and such, I'm afraid those days are over.

  • $55 Gingerman when it opened in 96 was $75 for a full day and $55 for a 1/2 day on Friday's before a race weekend. Nowadays track insurance is 500% more expensive therefore so are track days, throw into the mix influencers like Carl Haas at RA and the residents around Laguna Seca, and prices are getting extreme to the point of driving the regular guy off the track for good.

  • I also don't agree with what Craig said about spinouts are good. Driving to the limit is necessary for racing but not at track days, where safety is first. For newbies, spinouts are not acceptable as something you should commonly do. They should only occur when you are finding your limit but after serious experience on track. I would also recommend driving at that level when nobody else is around you at the track.

  • I greatly disagree with some of what Craig said considering he is talking to people who have 'no' track experience. You do NOT want to put R-compound tires on your first time out and in fact it is usually recommended to learn on typical street tires. Sure r-comps/ect will have more grip but generaly the break away tends to be much more rapid while giving less warning. Plus your 1st timer will usualy wont even be using the full grip of even allseasons. And the r-comps tires may mask mistakes.

  • Also don't recommend modifying a car before you have some real experience under your belt and you have a more specified reason for altering the car.(and before that changing tire pressure, alignment specs and of course driving habit should all be tried before hand)

    I do however recommend good brakepads and fluid, a good alignment and a good helmet.

    IMO, for a track car I'd go with a older cheap ride(used civic si/miata's.

    Also take note to your insurance policy! Most will pay but then drop U.

  • Also good points...beginners might indeed benefit from the auditory feedback and lower threshold limits of a less grippy tire.

  • If you are a true fan of the show (shout-out to Matt) or cars, you'd know Craig's Supra didn't start life as outlandish...Just bad-ass. I remember seeing it at a car show ages ago. It was the choice of the producers to ruin the car for the movie.

  • Matt, what's your opinion of the RX-8? I know you don't recommend us young guys buying first cars without warranties, but there are some 2004 beauties with low KMs (miles) to be had for under 15, or even 13k. Craig mentioned S2000s, Zs and WRXs, you think it's fair to throw the Mazda into the mix?

  • i say go for it. probably half the kids watching this show drive early 90s pieces of junk that are prone to breakdowns (obviously without warranties) so why not risk less with a newer car?

  • It's not bad. Not my favorite car out there, but if you can find one under warranty for a low price, it's fun to rev and reasonably well balanced for the track.

  • Good point. I mentioned those because I knew I had footage of those to tie into my comments...I didn't see any RX8's THAT day, but they, along with Miatas and RX7's (FC's or FD

    's) are superb track cars.

    Who knew Lieberman knows more than big stickers, 25 sticks of neon, and 10 tvs in a car.

    I agree with everything, but unless i was competing seriously i wouldn't bother with the tires.

    I would be interested in what my car can do with normal tires because thats how its driven daily.

    race tire eventually, just to see, but at first street tires for sure.

    Porsche club has a nice setup here, and when the 2 gets some leaks fixed i will be there.

  • Very informative episode. There's a track out near me in Oklahoma that is very good called Hallett Raceway. It hosted Atomfest this year. Tons of Atoms running around. Pretty cool. It just goes to show that even in Oklahoma there are great tracks to go to. Hey Matt, how can I become a correspondent for the show? :)

  • This video is spot on. I have a 93 Bmw 325IS (E36) with an M3 trans, M3 motor (S52), sport springs, upgraded brake pads, Toyo RA1's, and a limited slip 3.38 differential that I bring to lapping events here in the northwest. Excellent track car, and I am into it for under $10k with all the upgrades. Seriously if you are a car enthusiast, you need to be going to the track. It is pretty easy to get going.
