while other films will get boring... the 20th time you heard the same joke or the 100th time you know this person is going to die in this action scene... The Tree of Life will get more interesting over time and will never get old. THIS IS A GROUND BREAKING FILM.
I think this is a personal film and you can "see" it on any level you want.
I think people who have more life experience will be able to relate to it more. I'm not being patronising here but you have to be able to look back to your youth and your own childhood to find things that resonate with you.
Fundamentally it's a film about spirit and how you view the world around you. Whether you're actually aware of your surroundings and the people in your life.
@acechadwick I just saw it and I agree you with u mostly. But you can't relax, it's too confusing and unclear. I think it is tht way because life and people's lives are often confusing and have no plot, they are instead made up of many little plots.
@friendsroxs101 That's actually a very good take. When you think back on any event it is just random seconds of images and fleeting emotions. You don't remember in a linear way. What I meant by relax is don't fight it. I think a lot of people begin fighting it the moment it starts. You have to relax and see if it takes "you" anywhere. My sister cried for the whole 2 hrs, I didn't but it still resonated with me.
The way this movie looks to me tells me about a story of a young boy who had to experiance the loss of innocence at a young age and it follows him throughout his adulthood, seeking for redemption and faith
Yep, it's a Terrence Mallick film, full of slow, visual poems, elegiac feelings, wind machines, low light-levels (Mallick loves long shots at dawn or dusk.) This is going to be amazing.
Somebody tell me please: was this movie already released?....I am totally mesmerized by the trailer..........but never heard about this movie in the theaters....how can this be possible?
Brad Pitt's role in this movie was originally to be played by Heath Ledger. I think he would have made this more of an experience, even though i like Brad Pitt. It seems like it would have had the same tone as 'Candy' had Ledger played him. just how i feel.
@ArnoldtheDestroyer It doesn't have to be someone famous but I think the actors overall persona has to be taken into account. This just doesn't fit brad pitt, but if it was a 'nonamer' that fit the role better, i think it would have been more enjoyable.
Interesting fact: the "Someday we'll fall down and weep, and we'll understand it all, all things" part is actually taken from Dostoevsky's "Crime and Punishment." Marmeladov (Sonia's father if anyone's familiar with the text) tells Raskolnikov in Part I in the bar that "One day we shall weep...and we shall understand all things! Then we shall understand all!"
On a side note, can't wait for this movie. Malick is my favorite director- no doubt why!

Must've seen the trailer about a hundred times before I noticed the mother hiding behind the curtain at 1:24. Happens so fast it took me awhile to catch it.
@justapersonlikeyou Malick's films are deeply philosophical so if you don't enjoy really thinking about what is being shown to you then his films can be confusing. First time I saw Thin Red Line I was bored out of my mind. Went back and watched it a couple of years later with more patience and It's now my favorite film. Amazing in every way. Malick is a true one of a kind filmmaker
I can't wait for this - Days of Heaven is one of my top ten favourite films OF ALL TIME and this looks like it cover similar ground. Plus it fucking looks amazing.
terrence malick's movies are a little slow, but so beautifully written and filmed that i don't care. the first time i saw "the new world" i was overwhelmed with how different of a movie it was from anything i had ever seen before. every time i watch it i appreciate it more. they're certainly not for your average impatient movie-goer. in a world of michael bay and miley cyrus i'm glad we have terrence malick to keep us sane.
While the majority of the music steams from "Ma Vlast Modau", they use their own version. Anyone know what this version is? The parts 0:07 to 0:20 and during the boys comments, the addition to the original are amazing. If anyone can find the copy they using in this movie that would be great, I am sure the OST will contain it but it will be probably a while before we see it.
This looks like nothing more than Ramona and Beezus made into a drama. Boring American suburban family life in the 1950s and some grown man asking boring questions about life.
I almost don't want to see anything more of this film, including the film itsself. Because there is just no way - NO WAY - that anything could ever live up to that.

@flyinghotdogsbaby310 With such an abrasive question, you are most likely demanding an "instant gratification" answer. You most likely are incapable of comprehending the answer. Transformers is in the next theater over. Go see that.
@flyinghotdogsbaby310 I get the impression from the trailer that its about your parents affect on you as a child and an adult. But I have only seen the trailer I haven't read any reviews or researched it so I could be completely wrong. But I hope it's more helpful then some of the belittling and snobby replies you've gotten.
@floorpuddle It was crazy cool. The cool thing was that my best friends dad works for the sheriffs dept. and was one of the personal body guards for Brad Pitt. He's got pictures and everything. The tree that they brought in to town to be planted was huge. A few of my friends actually played small parts in the movie.
To those unfamiliar with Malick’s work, and to ensure the success/potentiality of the film, I suggest first viewing his other movies at home (since many people don’t mesh with their unconventional structure). That way you won’t be caught off guard and will have an idea of what to expect. And I would encourage those who ‘are’ familiar with his work, and are wanting to spread awareness, to do the same.
What you guys need to know is that this movie is letting us know that religion is fake and we were created by the Anunnaki and that soon enough they will return and we'll learn the true meaning of life !
If Emmanuel Lubezki doesn't get an Oscar for Cinematography for this film, like he so deserved for this work on Children of Men...there is no justice in the world.
Me too dude, both the Fountain and 2001. Have a feeling this will be our generation's 2001. Kubrick intended 2001's meaning to directly affect our subconscious, maybe this will do the same?
Btw...The Fountain is an amazing film, one of my favorites. Unjustly criticized.
No. He'd never encountered a caliber like this before; he was too young (for the movie, not Terrence). I imagine he was either dropped before he passed, or would have been dropped if he was still here. Brad Pitt is essentially perfect.
@RVNLOFT We have the full orchestral version available on our channel - performed by the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. On January 4th (only), we will offer Ma Vlast Moldau as a free download. Enjoy!
Can't wait!!! From what I've read Malick cuts the narrative with visuals of the creation of the earth and the age of the dinosaurs to express one man's search for the meaning of life...
@makwilli The music is not apart of the film's score. The music used in all trailer are very RARELY from the film itself. In this case, it's not from the movie.
don't be so sure about that Wildcat - while the first half is The Moldau by Smetana, the music that hits at 1:07 could very well be Desplat's score for the film. There have been occasions where a piece of the score has been used in trailers; the most recent of such examples is the full trailer for Tron: Legacy. Also the full theatrical trailer for Batman Begins contained music from the film too.
@sixamsedna I never said that music from a film is NEVER used for a trailer, I said it's USUALLY not used. Yes, Tron: Legacy did use it, but that's because it's a very electronic score which is appealing but not brilliant. I sincerely doubt this is Desplat's work, as his efforts are usually stamped with his trademark. I wished he did push a little farther away from his comfort level.

If Emmanuel Lubezki doesn't get an Oscar for Cinematography for this film, like he so deserved for this work on Children of Men...there is no justice in the world.
This film looks BEAUTIFUL.

Terrence Malick has a nice amount of time to write his Oscar speech.

@pandoraglory And video tape it, with all the lights off so you can't see his face, and mail it to the Academy to screen when he wins.
Ashiman12 1 year ago
@pandoraglory I'm sure he won't be attending.

Reminds me of The Fountain on another level.

If nothing else, I'm going to be gobsmacked by how beautiful every frame is lit and composed. Poetry in motion.

This kinda reminds me of The Fountain.

@beanerman146

Heath Ledger was supposed to play Brad Pitt's role. He would've nailed it.
RIP

@RequiemAmad
No. He'd never encountered a caliber like this before; he was too young (for the movie, not Terrence). I imagine he was either dropped before he passed, or would have been dropped if he was still here. Brad Pitt is essentially perfect.

The music is from Biedrich Smetana, called "My vlast" (my country)

@RVNLOFT We have the full orchestral version available on our channel - performed by the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. On January 4th (only), we will offer Ma Vlast Moldau as a free download. Enjoy!

Can't wait!!! From what I've read Malick cuts the narrative with visuals of the creation of the earth and the age of the dinosaurs to express one man's search for the meaning of life...

the music is heart twisting,, i cannot wait to get that soundtrack
makwilli 1 year ago
@makwilli The music is not apart of the film's score. The music used in all trailer are very RARELY from the film itself. In this case, it's not from the movie.
KayWildcat 1 year ago
@KayWildcat
don't be so sure about that Wildcat - while the first half is The Moldau by Smetana, the music that hits at 1:07 could very well be Desplat's score for the film. There have been occasions where a piece of the score has been used in trailers; the most recent of such examples is the full trailer for Tron: Legacy. Also the full theatrical trailer for Batman Begins contained music from the film too.
sixamsedna 1 year ago
@sixamsedna I never said that music from a film is NEVER used for a trailer, I said it's USUALLY not used. Yes, Tron: Legacy did use it, but that's because it's a very electronic score which is appealing but not brilliant. I sincerely doubt this is Desplat's work, as his efforts are usually stamped with his trademark. I wished he did push a little farther away from his comfort level.
