  • Life without computers or mobiles....

  • one word TIMELESS

  • Great audio on this one by skytrax1

  • Excelente canción.

  • I remember when Joe Jackson was right up there with Elvis Costello back when the whole punk/new wave scene hit the US.

  • excellent... kinda reminds me of xtc's (also excellent) 'all of the sudden its too late.'

  • i love the way the guitarist in the white shirt is really gettin into it, thats what bein a musician is all about

  • i like his song real men wich talks about the war between the sexes such man and women tori amos coverd it als lo

  • joe has always had it all. great sneer, sweetest smile. infectious. a voice of aggression, longing, despair, hope. great artist, what a heartbreak. so shy, so ambiguous.

29 years after "different4girls", i play this song back to back with "too tough" and it all comes full circle, all the love games we play. there will always be "tears and blood and stuff" woven into the finest music by joe jackson, aiming straight at our hearts.

  • who said anything about love?

  • Great song from J.J.!

  • oops! I meant 1:16-1:17 in my last post.

  • Love this song....

  • Where are you mike carson?

  • Q: Don't you know what's different for girls?

    A: Hugs.

  • totally rocks!

  • still a classic

  • listen to the drumming between 00;35 and oo;55

  • dave houghton= superb drummer.

  • Wauw RTL veronique. That's a long time ago, haha.

  • Er.....sorry! I did digress there, somewhat! I always think of Joe as a great talent. 'Look Sharp' was an amazing debut album for a guy in his mid-20s. This track is from 'I'm the Man' - - the follow-up album. 1978/9 was a great time in the UK for New Wave and Power Pop.

  • this song is a love/hate relationship with this song

    heard it on the radio

  • excellent lyrics & music...

  • My favorite Joe Jackson song. I just love this.

  • agreed. this song makes me sooo god damn happy. love it

  • The transition 2:34 to 2:40 is great

  • beautiful song

  • Great song, thanks for the post!

  • good song this one

  • he has a big lower lip.

  • I'd suck that lip right off of him if he were singing this to me in person! I just love his expressions in this song. He sings it with the perfect intensity and frustration. I love how he clenches his teeth when he sings the word, "know" in the line, "Don't you 'know' that it's different for girls?" and then how he stares you down and looks right into your eyes when he sings, "you're all the same" then squeezes his eyes shut tight and makes that frustrated grunt of irritation at 00:16 - 00:17!

  • Cynical song yet very poignant. Definitive of a culture in transition...the narcissism and self indulgence of the '70s moving toward the realism of the '80s.

This was the essence of what the critics called the "new wave" in pop music.

  • Quite right, Arkady63 - Cynical and Poignant. A great song by JJ. Not sure if I go along with '...self-indulgence of the 70s moving toward the realism of the 80s.' Give me the 70s any day (apart from the Industrial Strife and the Austin Allegro). I view much of the '80s as a horrible, 'plastic' decade of greed, Thatcherite self-gain, yuppies, bad hair, shoulder pads, red braces and poor-but-memorable pop music. Thank God for 90s Grunge relief.

  • Greed was the fashion in the '80s. It was actually cool to be right wing, self centered and - above all - materialistic.

And that it WAS, in fact, the fashion meant that the '80s had no pretentions. Baby boomers fucked and did drugs under the pretext of world peace and self-examination. Heaven forbid it be called hedonism!

We of the '80s ADMITTED that it was all about us and didn't lay transparent claim to some higher value.

As for '80s fashion, I kind of liked some of it.

  • C'est vrai, mon homme! <<-- Now that's pretentious! Yes, even though I look back on the 80s with considerable disdain, there wasn't the prevalence of deluded tree-huggers, etc. telling us how beautiful the world was. I'm afraid I was too naive to realise quite what was going on then but no doubt would have been swept up willingly by the tide of self-indulgence, if I had been more switched on. I would have have to say, however, that narcissism is a quality more relative to the 80s than the 70s.
