dang. that was so good. man that tuba was fantastic. our tuba in our band suks >-<. but tubas really help a band and were lacking the low sound in our band. im from the waianae intermediate advanced band on oahu. we welcome everybody and hope to get some supporters. our website is waianaemarchingband.webs.com. . i play the clarinet but i also play the trumpet and am trying to play oboe. its hard. i really enjoy playing. please support us! we really try our hardest!!!
I'm always amazed to encounter thumbs down for performances similar to this one, i.e. technically perfect renditions of brilliant showpieces. They didn't like the tune? Then why bothering listening to it and, moreover, rating it?
OK, I get it. It lacks emooootion. Next time, pick a Chopin Nocturne or Rachmaninov's Vocalise if you're in a really bad need of rubato and gorgeous nuances.
there's one point where the one trumpet player goes and plays the tuba for chuck. if you watch closely, notes are still coming out but no fingers are moving
@bandlover005 One of the main features in one type of playing that many topend players use is to move the lips as little as possible. If u just relax and blow u can play really high and really low withot altering the lipposition or even move them that much. Its all about air...
Some players thou are the complete opposit and can play good anyway. Its all about what suits u best
I realy like the tuba in it. I picture a bumble bee having a low pitched hum when it flies, so it realy is quite fitting. and also wow, to play that on a tube still impresses me.
most of these videos of Candian Brass isn't them playing live in the video, They record all of the instruments in studios and then they make a music video like this, and with them they try to add a little "Comedy" with the tuba player
@TNTTTMT its not they are really playing they just arent changing their amnoetuer because they are skilled to the point where they just have to change the air it is how most people play at this skill level and some just the oposite
I remember seeing them perform this and half way through one of them said he was hurt and the guy with the beard did the fingering for the first guys instument as well as his own. Does anyone have a video of this?
@Megatronacsbb its not circular breathing that they are doing... they are professional musicians they dont have to breath often at all... they arent playing high they are playing fast... playing fast doesnt take nearly as much air
It's my understanding that Charlie Dallenbach (tuba, here) once challenged Irish flutist, Sir James Galway, to a competition on fastest through "Flight of the Bumblebee". It is also my understanding that Charlie won.
@blueraspberry100 It is something to which the CB members used to refer in concert. I don't know if one can believe everything one hears, but the story sounded too specific to be made-up. We'll have to find Charlie and ask.
The Canadian Brass have always included a bit of humor and showmanship in their act and this video is a prime example, cuminating in Fred Mills "assistance" with the fingerings. They're all just great, and Fred Mills, while no longer a member of the group, will be missed by all brass players.
Where the tuba valves are positioned makes it much harder as he can't arch his fingers and strike down the valves, instead having to push them 'flat-fingered'. Much harder, I would've thought?
imagine how hard that is, with no valves pressed on a tuba, you are blowing through 16 feet of air, imagine blowing that much air through 16 feet that fast
It's not actually the air you are blowing through that quick or else the instrument would be impossible to play. It is the sound that is moving through the instrument. If you don't think I am correct, go to a brass player and tell them to just blow through their instrument and not buzz, all you will get is one short spurt of air.
oh my god, excuse my putting it in laymans terms, now, im not expert on the physics of tuba, but i do play in a brass quintet as the tuba, so get off your high horse
Your not the only person in the world who plays the instrument, I play in a brass band, and for that you would need significant amounts of air, more then required for a quintet.

oh don't get me wrong, they may have played it and if they didn't, whoever did is very talented. i just find their facial expressions look a tad bit off
almost all music videos are pre-recorded and then played over with a tape.. i doubt their budget as well as physical constraints of having enough room would have let them bring out the 9 or 10 different cameras they would have needed to get this all in one shot..
yes, what i mean is that they aren't actually playing in the video, and the way it is directed is evidence because it wouldn't be possible to record them in this setting live like that.. it really is them playing in the audio, but it is an overlay. their facial expressions in the filming session are visual only, and they probably had multiple takes to work on their funny expressions
Sweet Yaweh and Moses above. I played the Stars and Stripes Piccolo solo on the tuba for a concert, and I thought THAT was hard. (Although I have always known this piece, it amazes me every time.) That's nothing compared to this monstrosity. (The Russians seem to always have a lot of really good composers.)
