Well, I'm not particularly good, and it takes a while for me to form sentences. Understanding, reading and writing i can do. Speaking is sort of hard but all in all, I can survive in Japan (when speaking only Japanese) on it.

I am studying japanese as well..but I can speak...read..and write fine but when it comes to understanding its like my mind goes blank...I had the same problem with my spanish..I am fluent in spanish but if someone is talking to me and their not talking slow..I cant understand them..Lol

Understanding... well Its odd but when you think about it your brain actually has two different areas for understanding speech and for creating speech. So, like me who is very far in understanding is not so developed in the area of speaking. Its normal to be good at one and not so much at the other, you just have to train that other area of the brain for listening.

My first piece of advice would be to actually listen to someone speaking Japanese (don't use my video as an example, lol. My Japanese isn't good enough for that. btw, I'm making a new video soon, much better!) It can be in a song, which helped me ALOT, or drama, or anime or whatever your thing is. Then I suggest trying to hone your ears to picking up words that are in your vocabulary. Also when learning vocabulary say them out loud a few times so you are famililar with the sound of the word.

Then after a while as your vocabulary enhances and becomes wider ranged, you can pick up more and more words, which in the end will enable you to grasp the concept of what they are saying pretty much. Its all about familiarizing your ears with the words. Once you do that, the words pop out to you! Only thing is that you also need to understand grammar as well (especially for verb conjugations- kinda important). All in all, you get better with time and practice.
