When the rupture occured, high pressure cabin air entered the empennage, broke the Aux.power unit wall, entered the fin and destroyed the fixture between the stringer and rib chord of the aft torque box, leading to seperation of a secton of the fin and rudder and severing all 4 control hydraulic lines

The bulkhead failure was due to a faulty repair following a tail drag at Osaka in June 1978.

Worst I've heard is the Detroit flight where the pilots are joking about crashing just before take-off. Apparently flaps were not set correctly and the aircraft did not climb out properly. It hit some light poles, then a building before finally crashing on a highway. The screams of 100+ passengers and flight crew just before impact are clearly heard and truly terrifying...

All are horrifying but the AA 191 flight out of Chicago had to be one of the worst. The pax on the left side of the plane saw the engine fly up over the wing and then they were all looking straight down at the ground as the plane went down. The screaming on that plane would make your blood run cold. Glad no CVR for that crash.

this was the worst single aircraft accident on US soil... keyword SINGLE.

It happened right after take off near O'Hare Int'l Airport (where I work as a mechanic) . A DC10 lost number 1 jet on rotation (lift off). Caused by lazy mechanics not removing the jet from the pod while servicing.

Having grown up around aircraft, I seen more than a few wrecks, but the worst one was a an DC-3 passenger plane that clipped some trees in a storm and then just fell apart, scatttering luggage & people everywhere, as well as the aircraft itself.

JAL 123 was crashed into a mountain because of a broken rudder, and aloha 234 was a Comet that was ripped apart in the middle of the sky because of weak window corners and weak rivets, but the captain managed to take it back to an airport safely. Only a crew member died. she/he was pulled out by the initial pressure of the explosion.

JAL123 crashed due to a failiure of the rear pressure bulkhead, not because of a rudder failiure. The rudder was affected but not detached from the aircraft. As for Aloha it was actually a B737-200, not a Comet and the rupturing was due to age and too many flight cycles. The window corner rupturing you describe did only happen on the actual comet crashes, all in the early fifties and was resolved in part by designing the windows rounder as they are now.
