In fairness his comment on Elvis not being successful if he hadn't had the song writers could be applied to a multitude of artists. It's a fucking daft argument. Presley was first and foremost a singer or an entertainer. Zappa was a musician and a snobby elitist one too I might ad.
Elvis was not the 1st rockabilly singer or the 1st white guy to sing "black" (didn't sound black to me), but maybe for those who didn't know anything but what Time magazine told them, he was. Elvis was a sad story. Musicians were fighting for their right to control their own sound, but Elvis went the old way (he was already owned) entrusting it all to the exploiters, and went downhill the more famous he got. Twas a shame.

Most opera singers can sing on many more registers than the ones they use as their "official" register. There's a big difference between singing like Elvis and using those registers with a microphone just in front of the mouth and singing in a big Opera Stage without that kind or even any kind of amplification. There were a few "opera singers" who remarked and admired his voice, but opera singers don't "desire" to sound like him. They "desire" to sing in the MET and they don't study R&B.
Frank understood show business better than anyone, and can see right through the way a star is portrayed in the media (Why exactly is EP "the king"? That was created by someone in media).

Elvis was not the 1st rockabilly singer or the 1st white guy to sing "black" (didn't sound black to me), but maybe for those who didn't know anything but what Time magazine told them, he was. Elvis was a sad story. Musicians were fighting for their right to control their own sound, but Elvis went the old way (he was already owned) entrusting it all to the exploiters, and went downhill the more famous he got. Twas a shame.

Frank is the most intelligent and considerate creative man. I m and his spirit of good fun and thoughtful straight forward guy. So sweet, and sincere and a penultimate professional performer. Never afraid to have a good time and always respected everyone involved artists, audience, opponents. We are better off because he delivered his sensibility every day. I miss him and his spirit.

McCarthy had no lasting impact on anything. McCarthy is still demonized because most of his communist allegations were against Jews. And Jews will beat that drum forever. McCarthy's record has proven to be extremely accurate

His success had more to do with "the way he looked". Elvis sang with feel and you could feel his love of the music. Yes, he wasn't a song writing genius, but unfortunately that isn't the only thing that makes it in the business. I sound resentment in Zappa's voice.... Poor soul.

Too bad Frank never saw the Venona transcriptions (communication between the KGB and Soviet spies in the U.S.) which bore out most all of McCarthy's suspicions. It's very shallow to say that he can judge somebodies character by their "look" or "eyes'--that practice nearly a witch hunt in itself. Ironic because I heard Frank say many times say he didn't believe in the supernatural.
Regardless of all this, he was a musical genius and I can forgive him his politics.

I'm with Frank on the Elvis issue... that so many consider him the "KIng of Pop" says a lot about the music tastes of the masses and explains the phenomena of someone like Lady Gaga being worshipped as a "genius" while real geniuses remain noticed by relatively few.

I think, being a Zappa fan/non Elvis fan, that what Frank is saying is not that Elvis was untalented. He was pointing out that the Elvis story is tragic. Used by the industry until he was no longer salable, then discarded. This ultimately lead to his death thru drugs and depression. As for comparing the two its apples and oranges. Zappa being the more musically talented and Elvis more the entertainer.

Of course Elvis (& others) broke open paths & avenues that hadn't been available before... probably opened doors FOR Zappa (as well as others).
That isn't the point.
The point is how much talent the artists mentioned had.
Zappa's talents were not only in performing. He could compose, orchestrate, conduct AND perform.. incredibly well!
He was amazingly talented.
Lanza, Sinatra & Elvis were wonderful performers. But the point is that Zappa's creative abilities went beyond that.

There are singers who never write songs who can impart to melodies undreamed of qualities.

Even the Beatles regarded Elvis as the incarnation of Krishna, having been the Beatles.
Singing and performing is an art in itself, not just a part of.

I'm certainly not "down" on any of the performing artists wh've been mentioned.
But that's what they are... performing artists.
That's the reason they're called that in all the awards shows.
Their art is important & they were incredibly good at it.
Zappa, however, was a brilliant COMPOSER.
Apples & oranges.
Sure, you can say whether you think Zappa was a good performer or not.
But you can't say whether Elvis was a good composer.
Different things.

Most opera singers can sing on many more registers than the ones they use as their "official" register. There's a big difference between singing like Elvis and using those registers with a microphone just in front of the mouth and singing in a big Opera Stage without that kind or even any kind of amplification. Elvis was a very good singer, but come on, there's no point of comparison between Elvis and Opera singers. And anyway, what's the point of doing such a comparison?

Pop singers are one things, classical singers are another, and classical usually lack the appeal to the common person: In fact, pop singers with all their "defects" surpass them...
Mario Lanza, one of the most gifted tenors in history was rejected by that same classical worl just because he sang popular tunes, which is ridiculous.

He obviously doesn't know a lot about Elvis Presley. He shouldn't have given his opinion on the reason for his success. Elvis has the one voice that most who study vocal talent would desire, including opera singers.

Your argument is weak since opera singers specialize in one vocal area. Do I have to use Pavarotti being a tenor as an example?
There were a few "opera singers" who remarked and admired his voice, but opera singers don't "desire" to sound like him. They "desire" to sing in the MET and they don't study R&B.
Frank understood show business better than anyone, and can see right through the way a star is portrayed in the media (Why exactly is EP "the king"? That was created by someone in media).
